Roster to be trimmed to 75

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff August 26, 2008 06:15 AM

NFL teams must trim their rosters from 80 to a maximum of 75 by 4 p.m. today.

Speaking during his regularly scheduled Monday appearance on WEEI, Patriots coach Bill Belichick hinted that a few of the roster moves might be injury-related, which could mean that some players land on season-ending injured reserve.

Here are a few of the players who have not practiced of late who potentially might fall into that category:

  • CB Mike Richardson
  • RB Kyle Eckel
  • OT Ryan O'Callaghan
  • DL Le Kevin Smith

    1. Hey Mike,
Thanks for the great info as always. I've said it before, while other fans starve for some press clippings from their team we get a few nuggets everyday and as a fan it's fantastic to have that connection to your team as much in April as we do in October. Thanks!

As an NHL Senators fan here in Ottawa I'm all to familiar with the knock on fans who worry and obsess too much but holy wow do the Boston area fans ever lose it quickly? This guy sucks, this guy is overrated, team has no passion etc etc. Is it just me or does everyone down there have the shortest memory ever? Don't worry my friends - Tommy terrific will take the field and things will align as WE march toward another Super Bowl beginning September 7. Calm down and forget August besides you should be worried about the Sox imploding - the Jays are coming, the Jays are coming!!!

    1. If Richardson went on IR, you'd have to think that he would lose just about any chance he ever had at stepping on the field. If he was on IR two straight years, I'd think that he would lose a step, maybe more, from what he was in 2007 camp.

Eckel would be a likely candidate, otherwise, I see his tenure with the Pats coming to an end, despite how well everyone likes him.

I hope O'Callaghan isn't going on IR. He's a great backup/fringe starter and it would be a shame to lose him. Same goes with Le Kevin. I liked his versatility, and he often surprised me by making good plays. Maybe his loss (if it happens) could open up the door for a guy like Steve Fifita to make the team.

    1. How's Stephen Neal doing? He could be moved to reserve/PUP to create a roster spot too, right?
