Impact of Tom Brady not practicing

Posted by Chris Forsberg, Boston.com Staff August 20, 2008 10:45 AM

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, who didn't travel to Tampa Bay for Sunday's second exhibition game against the Buccaneers due to a sore right foot, was also not present for the portion of practice open to the media Tuesday.

With Brady's status uncertain for Friday's preseason matchup with the Philadelphia Eagles, the Globe's Mike Reiss analyzes what Brady's absence from practice means for the Patriots.

To watch the video (and for a written summary), follow the link below.

Written summary

  • It's a topic of discussion similar to last year with WR Randy Moss not practicing. That turned out OK.
  • There are some differences between Brady and Moss, though, as Brady's absence affects the other 10 players on the offense more than Moss's absence did.
  • Brady is not missing any new work; he'd just be fine-tuning at this point.
  • Like the Colts and Peyton Manning, it's not ideal, but it shouldn't hurt the team much.

    1. A sore foot? From what? Does that mean a sprain or a strain? What part of the foot? How close to 100% will he be in 3 weeks? Well, Tom says it's different from last year's ankle but the same foot. Hmmmm... getting closer... Isn't this fun, Mike?

It's football season. Guess what that means everyone?

It's time for another year of charades with Bill Belichick and his all-pro team of mumblers, rumblers, and less-than-vague sentence givers!!

Are you ready to rumble.... ah--hemmm.... I mean, speculate all season long, for the 9th year in a row, why the Patriots refuse to give us a single detail about their locker room unless they absolutely have to. Or unless Shaughnessy hides in a spare locker with a dictaphone.

Just keep winning Bill. A win is the peanut butter that I mix your "never tell me anything" pill with before I swallow it.

I already know what Belichick is going to say after the first game. "One team made more plays when they needed to."

      The End.

      Cheers.

    1. Am I the only one who feels the problem doesn't lie with the QB's? What about the complete absense of the running game in Tampa? Does that mean all the running backs are no good? C'mon, this team will not improve until it has a functioning line. This line plays like it would have a difficult time in college. And speaking of the offensive line, even last year, All-Pro's notwithstanding, they did a sub-par job against teams that had good front sevens; think Baltimore, Philly, Dallas. The team need a good line before it can accurately access the quarterbacks and running backs performance as well as the receivers.

Some things are not our business what gives you the right to know anything about Brady's medical condition.
Nevermind the benefit the opposing team gets in knowing as much as possible about injuries and such.
I applaud BB, Pioli, Kraft and the players for showing a united front under ALL circumstances and i believe this is a large part of a larger process in consistantly winning football games.
I hope Brady is just fine but I trust The Team wil find a way to be successful if he should miss any time with this injury

    1. Brady has been nowhere to be seen. That makes me thing this injury might be more serious than we have been led to believe.

    1. I completely agree with Bernie B. The stupidest thing we could possibly do would be to tell our opponents the detailed status of each player. It would allow them to game-plan better and, if someone was playing hurt, would allow them to know where to hit the player and who they can beat. Although I would like to know Tom Brady's status, ultimately it makes no difference in my life if I know exactly how he's hurt or where.....but it makes a HUGE difference if our opponents knew.

    1. Maybe Tom just wants to take a breather and spend some additional time with his sweetie.

    1. Hey Bernie B and Bruce,

Why not tell the other team every detail about our injury, and then on Sunday it is what it is and Brady crushes it if he can.
What's the difference? Details don't have anything to do with performance.

Ah... who cares. As long as they win, we'll keeping eating their vanilla ice cream.

But didn't "The Team" try to make it seem like Brady's foot was fine for the SB, when it wasn't and he got sacked like 100 times? Guess it doesn't work every time....

You dont have to eat vanilla ice cream. I guess thats my point There are many other flavors of ice cream in the NFL It just so happens that Patriots Vanilla is the "Best Seller" "Most Popular" "winningest" over the last 7 or 8 years. You Can get more from other flavors(teams) if that is what you want.
But This is what they're selling here in New England dont act surprised when it happens.
The information has never been available and i for one hope it is never available again.
