Source: Chad Jackson released

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff August 31, 2008 12:26 PM

In a surprising move, the Patriots informed wide receiver Chad Jackson this morning that they are cutting him from the roster, according to a league source.

Jackson, the team's second-round draft choice in 2006, entered training camp in a battle for the No. 3 job previously occupied by Donte' Stallworth. He also took repetitions as a punt returner.

With Jabar Gaffney seizing the role of No. 3 receiver, and receiver/returner C.J. Jones making the 53-man roster, Jackson was apparently deemed expendable.

  1. Hmm...With this move, combined with the release of Fernando Bryant, I smell a Ty Law signing in the near future...

  1. on your roster count cj-jones is already there.if we released chad it would be 52 unless somebody else got signed.

  1. please tell me your kidding... I had such high hopes for him this season. I dont have any confidence in C.J. Jones either he is not an option for the future. This makes me feel that we are now thin at WR if anything were to ever happy to randy moss and wes welker is already injured.. physically Chad could have been our best receiver i hope they atleast saw someone else that got cut who they think is better. Either way it leaves me feeling that WR is a priority in the draft next year even though i would have like to focus elsewhere.

  1. I'm just glad he's gone so there won't be any more articles about this loser. I've never seen more stories about a guy who has done absolutely nothing, he had more stories about him than receptions. All that talent and just couldn't get his head into the game, good riddance. Bring back Troy Brown!!!

Posted by Rich August 31, 08 12:53 PM
  1. I don't get this either. He really came on in the last two games. But whatever. I guess this means someone will be signed. Ty Law? Junior Seau? Troy Brown? Caldwell was cut yesterday, maybe he returns? (just a thought).

  1. I wonder if they belatedly cut Chad Jackson in hopes that he wouldn't be picked up off the waiver wire and would then be more sure of being added to the practice squad? That way the Pats could still have him around and have spot cleared for someone else.

  1. they gave him 3 seasons and he didn't get as good as he was supposed to be. enough waiting.

  1. So CJ Jones as a rookie is already better than Jackson, interesting. I had high hopes for Jackson too, defn sucks. So Mike did you see Jackson's locker when media had access to the locker room?

It would seem they wont need to do it till after the first game when faulk gets back. Why not yesterday?

Posted by ProvMan August 31, 08 12:58 PM
  1. No surprise here. He was in the mode of Tony Simmons, Bethel Johnson and other great (wide) hopes of the Patriots past. All potential, but not much else.
While not a replacement, I think Ray Ventrone will surprise here, especially if Welker misses any action.

Posted by Steve August 31, 08 12:59 PM
  1. ProvMan,
CJ Jones is not a rookie, he's 27 yrs old and has been to TC with the Pats for 3 yrs now.

Now, as far as Jackson is concerned there is not much to this. Although physically gifted he just hasn't developed enough. Still very raw running routes and never seems to be in the right spot also has shown no signs of improvement. Andrew, If a player hasn't produced for you in the past and you have shown you can produce w/out him then you are not losing much.

  1. Chas,
I don't think he's eligible for the practice squad ( not that they'd want him) as he has an accrued season ( 12 games in 2006) .

Much ado about nothing. How can any Pats fan hate to see a total non-achiever go? Bizarre.

  1. Sounds like a salary cap dump to prepare for someone more expensive. Most likely Law.

Posted by ST August 31, 08 01:09 PM
  1. Agree that this appears to set the stage for a Law signing. Ty rolled the dice and won. Cowboys will pick up Jackson as a project.

Posted by Pete Clark August 31, 08 01:12 PM
  1. C.J. Jones beat Jackson hands down for the job and this move is to allow room for Faulk to be added to the 53 as the pats got a 1 week exemption due to his suspension....... Or Could Rudi Johnson be on his way to New England...Hummm

  1. Bad move don't understand it at all, I think he showed enough this preason and is finally healthy, We should have giving this 1 more year. Who going stretch the field oppisite randy moss? That's not jabar's game. Well look 4 awhole bunch of 3-5 yrd passes to our running backs. C.J. Jones is in his 3rd year he got some talent but needs 2 hold on to the ball!

Posted by MalcolmAnthony August 31, 08 01:14 PM
  1. All this Ty Law love is scary. I would rather see a rookie start. Let the Rookie win.

Posted by Space Bandito August 31, 08 01:15 PM

  1. I think the Patriots waited a day to see if they could trade him.

Posted by James Keddy August 31, 08 01:17 PM
  1. 3 years with zero production. Wonder what his attitude was in the locker room. I am not BB/SP, but I wonder if a seasoned-vet QB (possibly a son of a player that was a QB who won a Super Bowl with BB on the staff of the Giants) might be added. Much roster movement this year...BB/SP certainly working on getting team younger. I can' wait to see what th efinished product looks like this Sunday!!!!!

Posted by Frank August 31, 08 01:17 PM
  1. Law might be the option ....I would much rather dump Cassell and pick up Sims from Tampa Bay...Talk about an underacheiver.....Casselll Could very well be the poster boy!!!

Posted by sonny olivar August 31, 08 01:18 PM
  1. be prepared to see hank poteat before ty law, poteat knows the current system as opposed to what it was like when law played (although the termanolagy would be the same) also Ty has lost a step and gained some weight. he looks like a saftey, not the LCB that we need. hank poteat would be the most likely signing which could also leave them open to bring in Seau. also on the list in front of Ty Law, Tyrone Poole was cut earlier today

    Posted by Mike K August 31, 08 01:21 PM
  1. Jackson was too inconsistent. Too many dropped passes that should have been catches. Had the physical abilities. Too bad.

Posted by Kyle August 31, 08 01:24 PM
  1. What happened to Kyle Eckel? He seems to have disappeared.

Posted by Stan August 31, 08 01:24 PM
  1. Remember Peter Warrick drafted by the bengals had an awsome college career but never showed up in the nfl...... thats who Jackson reminds me of... Good riddens.. and as for Ty Law He's not the reason... Someone on another nfl team got cut and I see a new signing on the way.. But who is it......?????????

Posted by Joe August 31, 08 01:24 PM
  1. They couldn't even trade him for something? Was he viewed that poorly through the league that no one wanted his rookie contract? They couldn't get any draft picks or a player for him?

Posted by JG August 31, 08 01:27 PM
  1. Several tempting free agents out there now with all the cuts. Rudi Johnson etc...

Posted by Chad August 31, 08 01:27 PM
  1. How does Cassell not get cut???

Posted by phil August 31, 08 01:27 PM
  1. Rudi Johnson? Is 5 running backs not enough?

Posted by Heath August 31, 08 01:29 PM
  1. I smell Ashley Lelie signing

Posted by Bob August 31, 08 01:31 PM
  1. DO people not remember that cassel was a 7th round pick with about 30 snaps in college, he was no risk pick, personally I think they should go find out what happened to rohan davie and bring him back, guy was the man

Posted by YANKEES SUCK August 31, 08 01:32 PM
  1. Eckel was let go in the first round of cuts to 75. Kind of too bad, I was hoping they'd keep him but he was obviously way down on the depth chart and the Pats apparently only see a need to keep one fullback (Evans).

Don't know what's on their mind for Jackson's roster spot. Maybe Junior's coming back again, maybe Law, maybe somebody we don't know about yet.

Posted by Eric August 31, 08 01:33 PM
  1. Cassel doesn't get cut because he's the future. He's definitely the next Brady and it wouldn't surprise me if he is better than Brady. Can you smell Superbowl # 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 under Cassel? I can.

Posted by Johnson August 31, 08 01:36 PM
  1. Cassell was better on my depth chart just for having more knowledge of the offense, but he still might get cut if a viable recently cut Qb is out their..But until then he is the best option

Posted by Joe August 31, 08 01:36 PM
  1. this guy will be signed by tommorow... cinci needs wr... hell the phins have first crack and they could use a wr too... im questioning this move. granted he has not done anything with us maybe he just cant get into the playbook or establish a raport with brady, but he has to much talent to be a complete failure in this league. he will catch on with someone and have a decent career somewhere else. wr suddenly looks thin. it seems like every year there are a few players cut that leave me scratching my head. especially when guys like matt crapsell are kept on the roster.

Posted by Ryan August 31, 08 01:37 PM
  1. Eckel was cut last week.
Houston cut Rosevelt Colvin today. Any chance he comes back at a discount price? Or is he not healthy?

Posted by Chris in Illinois August 31, 08 01:38 PM
  1. CJ Jones is a much much better return-man than Jackson

Let's pick up Harrington and cut Cassel.

Not sold on Ty Law. Last thing Geritol Stadium- um, I mean, Gillette Stadium needs is another old man running at half-speed.

Posted by Los Angeles August 31, 08 01:39 PM
  1. This move comes as a big surprise to me, especially after he played very well in the last 2 preseason games and he made the 53 man roster. They probably tried to trade him, but no one wanted him. Some time wil definately pick him up. But why did CJ Jones make it over him. I like Ventrone, but CJ Jones????? Notice the Pats only kept 4 cornerbacks, this move almost guarantee Law is gonna be signed, although I did want to see how Wheatley would do if he won the starting job.

Posted by pats fanatic August 31, 08 01:40 PM
  1. Moving Forward here folks... Ty Law , Rohan Davie, not the answer.. Their are only two guys I would take a back step for and one is a QB...Flutie the other is Corey Dillion.

Posted by Joe August 31, 08 01:40 PM
  1. willie anderson as o-line depth signing?

    Posted by d August 31, 08 01:43 PM
  1. Suspect that Pats were trying to do a deal with Dallas for Jackson, but that fell through.

Law provides a safe transition at CB until Wheatley is ready to start, probably around mid-season. Pats will play a lot of three CB sets, but Meriweather is fragile and may no longer be available for the third CB role. The Law signing will prevent a disaster at CB like a few years ago. Whoever thinks re-signing Poole is a possibility is hallucinating-- he's even softer than Bryant, if that's possible.

Posted by Pete August 31, 08 01:43 PM
  1. Pats need OL help...they will sign Willie Anderson former Bengle and he will start right away.

Chad Jackson goes to the WRless Seahawks

Posted by JimR August 31, 08 01:57 PM
  1. Cassel better than Brady??!! Everyone could see Brady had loads of talent when he was playing preseason games as Bledsoe's back-up, but who has seen ANYTHING from Cassel that would justify that?

I'd much rather see the Pats grab a DB or Willie Anderson to help the line than some other WR.

Posted by Jamie August 31, 08 02:01 PM
  1. Looking at the cut it makes sense. Kelley Washington may step into the slot as well. With his speed down the field and his ability to get the ball/returner in special teams I think No. 15 will perform well regardless of what is thrown at him. I think BB knew and expected that out of him. That's why he was re-signed in the off-season. I think with a possibility of a couple of drops in the regular season I don't think they wanted a roster spot taken up by the weakest link in the receiving corp. I am a little disapointed that the more experienced Matt is staying. I think his raport with Tom Brady is what is keeping him in Foxboro and not his play. This team I believe is far from done in making changes to their roster.

I hope he is cut and grab either...LEE, Anderson, or Simms

  1. its either a cornerback or a linebacker. i say they are bringing back colvin. when they cut him, he was under a big contract. now, they get a guy who know the defense, at a good price. he has no other place to go, its too late. if they didnt like cassel, they would have kept guitarrez, and dumped cassel, then waited to find better. Cassel must be their pick. They must also like the WRs they have.

Posted by Pat fan in PA August 31, 08 02:16 PM
  1. Chad Jackson was an injury prone, immature WR. He had plenty of
chanes with the Pats and should have grabbed a hold of the position
in 06' when the Pats had no WR's. BUST!

  1. Good riddence to bad luck. CJ is the latest Bethel/Tony Simmons.

    I want:
Willie Anderson signed, with Connolly cut.
Chris Simms signed, Matt Cassel cut.
Open roster spot to STAY OPEN to prepare for unforeseen injuries that thin out CB/OL.

The Pats won't sign Rudi. The stable will suffice. I also don't want slow older guys signed, especially on D. Guys like Law, Colvin, Tyrone Poole, etc.

as for the last open spot.

This is hilarious! It sounds like Matt Cassel reads Mike's blog, too. If this isn't Matt Cassel, then someone hasn't been paying attention.

Bye bye, Chad Jackson. You were given every chance in the world. It proves the Patriots staff were only human when they selected you in the draft to begin with.

Hopefully this means that the Pats are looking at signing someone else for the roster. I can't see them bringing back Colvin. He couldn't pass their physical before they cut him. I think Simms would be a good backup QB, but there will be a lot of competition to get him, and he has to have lingering health issues, too. It would be awesome if they got Ty Law back, but the Pats have never been able to give him what he thinks he's worth.

    Can't wait for next Sunday!

  1. wow you guys are naming some garbage out there. ty law? Reche !#@$@! Caldwell?!?!? Tyrone Poole?!?!?! omg.

We need CB help but not THAT bad. We don't really need another WR unless someone gets hurt. We do need depth on the O line.

One thing we definitely need more of is SPEED ON DEFENSE. This team looks like the 02 Pats on D... remember that year? Not too good.

  1. Good conversation folks. I like the Willie Anderson move for this slot, Sims in and Cassel out, Seau in... rather than Colvin (we could use his intensity on defense as well as Tedy gets a breather). Great if one of the rookie CB's was to step up, as Law might be too slow...but he does have the experience and savvy.

Posted by Robbie August 31, 08 03:21 PM
  1. Bam Childress will be back after being cut by the Eagles. He's a true 4th option after #15.

CJ and Ventrone will be waffling on the edge of being on the team - and hitting the wire -- with the edge to Ventrone. Neither is a true WR or DB. Ventrone is a bad ass. CJ is quick & elusive.

Ty Law is a viable replacement as is Deltha Oneil. The other scrap-heap DB's aren't. Also wound not be surprised to see Bryant resigned in some silly $$ saving move craft by BB & co.

    Asking for way too much.

  1. I do not see Law coming to the Patriots. He had his time. I think it is time to move on from Jackson. He cannot run routes, Falls down in a wide open end zone. Cannot stay healthy. He has the tools, but not the head. Think the Lynch release was more of a surprise.

Posted by Markc August 31, 08 04:14 PM
  1. The Patriots have THIRTY players on offense right now including Kevin Faulk.

Posted by Gaza Deluxe August 31, 08 04:39 PM
  1. Sensible move. Chad Jackson was given every opportunity and seized none of them. CJ Jackson showed me much more this preseason, and apparently Bill saw the same thing.

Posted by NoNoNobama August 31, 08 04:50 PM
  1. for the past two games Chad Jackson performed ok with the horrendous play of Matt Cassel and Matt Gutierrez and not much of a supporting crew. He displayed some of the physical abilities everyone talks about but few ever see. So did anyone think that maybe with Tom Brady throwing the ball and most defenses worried about Moss and Welker he would have a chance to shine? I think Chad deserves a roster spot over Sam Aiken or CJ Jones. Combined.

Jevon Walker just changed his jersey from 17 back to his #84. Jackson was 17! ya-ya, but hey, i watched teh kid in preseason, and i think bilicheck is bummed about losing him too. or maybe it was a "man, what took so long?" look. not sure with that guy.however, we could use this guy that's for sure. we have Lelie in mind as well....and Willie Anderson. Best of luck chums! Oh, and i'll be by tomorrow to thank you! we just might pick up Colvin too!

  1. the way pats been putting a team together these past couple yrs is AGRIVATING the least. BB is a great coach but a lil lazy n stubborn. How would u rather start a 40 yr old and a 36 yr old stroke victim LB than picking couple of the many talented LB's in the draft, giving them a chance and coach'em. I know BB 's system is complex but ya have 2train somebody at some point so y wait til your pinned down with Lb's past their prime. Also get a real O-LINE Mankins is solid, Light past his prime 4 a LT the rest could be knocked backwards by the olson twins
