Tom Brady staying home to rest sore foot

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff August 16, 2008 05:35 PM

The Patriots visit the Buccaneers tomorrow night, and quarterback Tom Brady is not making the trip with the club.

Brady is remaining in the New England area because of a sore foot, according to a NFL source.

Brady, whose injured right ankle was a hot topic of discussion last January when he was spotted in New York City wearing a protective boot, did not practice on Friday.

It is unknown which foot is causing Brady problems.

Brady told media members on Wednesday that he was looking forward to playing in the preseason at some point. When asked how he would feel about not taking a snap in the preseason, Brady, who did not play in the preseason opener, said that wasn't an issue because he expected to play.

His absence means the quarterback duties are likely to be split among Matt Cassel, Matt Gutierrez and Kevin O'Connell tomorrow night.

  1. Well, no better time to figure out who would make the best backup. Do you think if the source is right, and Brady is not there/does not play that someone besides Cassel will get the start? If Cassel starts again, that could be a sign that the coaching staff feel he is currently the next best option.

  1. I believe Cassel starts again. While looking shaky, he is still the best backup for this team. A backup should know the offense perfectly and be competent. Cassel, while not the best passer, is still far ahead of the other two. But the real goal is to find out he replaces Cassel after this year, which is Gutierrez and O'Connell are playing for. I think they keep all 4 QB's; just look at the lack of QBs in the NFL with the situation with the Jets, 49ers etc...

  1. Did tom brady get hurt in tranning camp?
Is tom going to play in any pre season games?

  1. "Waaaaa, my foot is sore"

We all know he's staying home to rub Gisele's feet

  1. After last week's poor showings, all three non-Brady quarterbacks need another chance to demonstrate they can do the job, hopefully with a few more starters playing.

  1. Maybe is he stopped hanging around in NYC wearing those stupid looking cowboy boots his foot would be okay! Be a real man and wear sneakers. Hey Tom make sure those fashion boots are the right size. No need to be vain about your shoe size! Go Matt!

  1. Hopefully this isn't the same injury/area as last yr...this will give the coaches another long look at the other 3 and if Cassel falters like last game his days could be numbered....now way a 4th yr QB should look out of synch out there at this point.

  1. At some point the Pats need to get serious about developing a QB. Not necessarily Brady's replacement... yet... but one that could be trade-bate for future high draft picks. Cassel has shown that he will NOT be a starter in this league, and I even question his ability to step in for a game or two.

  1. My concern is that if Brady's foot is sore and it is the same injury as last year then we are in for a long season.

  1. sorry, but this is not a good sign. however, why hasn't this been brought up earlier by the mega coverage of training camp?

i agree w/ JMB, if this really is a nagging foot injury...2008 isn't going to be fun. we have NO back up QB's that can run this O. Cassell is ok, but he hasn't shown anything yet this year.

  1. Short of Brady being assassinated by one of Gisele's ex-boyfriends, lets stop worrying about a back-up we "trust". That "trust" only comes after a QB plays enough to show he "gets it" and does "it" when its counts in a big game. If and when Brady get seriously hurt, lets just accept that "we're screwed". In the mean time, no other QB wearing a Pat's jersey will see meaningful minutes so long as Brady is healthy. I wonder, has anyone seen Randy Moss throw a football to himself? He just might have to if Brady gets hurt.

  1. Reading these comments by people who are obviously NFL knowledgeable is heartwarming in a quaint sort of way.

  1. Hey Gick, at least Brady's not at home like you, "rubbing" yourself in your brand new NY Jets #4 jersey.

  1. I think Gisele should start since she wears the panties in the family

  1. who cares if he doesn't play in the preseason.

screw the preseason. i'd much rather have brady take a month off and come back healthy for the regular season than force him in there with a sore foot and jeopardize his performance when it really matters.

he can stay home getting foot massages the entire preseason for all i care.

  1. Bledsoe would play

  1. No wonder Moss is nervous...

  1. To bad Brady did not stay home before the SB to rest his sore ankle. Now this makes it looks like that ankle/foot has been a problem since then and may be a reason he was not as active in off season activities. Talk about telegraphing to the entire league that he has a possible on going problem. Now all kinds of defenses will be aiming for his foot/ankle. really stupid announcement.

  1. cassel will start based on seniority and he'll make the team. this is his 3rd or 4th year right? why cut him now? the qb market is bleak.

  1. anyone else think Belichick went to Brady and said "by the way for next week's game your foot will be injured...and will be all pre-season until we get out offensive line starters back".

Posted by mike August 17, 08 01:32 AM
  1. maybe they want to put the fear of no Brady into the backups to see what they can really do.

Posted by dirtywater August 17, 08 02:11 AM
  1. I don,t think it's necessary to worry about Brady's foot. It's a good excuse for him to stay home and relax. This seems to be Belicek's way of treating veterans now and it works. Why risk Brady against a bunch of bums trying to make a team.

Posted by Lee August 17, 08 02:14 AM
  1. our back-ups are not the anwser.if brady was to miss a number of games.we need a veteran back-up.

Posted by darryl August 17, 08 02:16 AM
  1. Its pre-season I would rater he not play...He gets enough reps in practice during the week.....We don't need him being a target while the offensive line is not set yet
I would prefer seeing the other three compete so that B,B can make a final decision as to who is going to keep on the roster !! I would like to see Guitierezz start......and give Oconnell more playing time ....We all know what Cassell can do after 4 years with the Patriots.......Why place such an importance on Cassell when more than likely he will be out of football in a couple of weeks.....With this nagging foot injury we have to give the other two quality playing time to evaluate the things they have to work on .....

  1. It's a smoke screen. Tom's skill is well known. This is just a scheme to give the others playing time to figure out who stays & who goes.

Posted by JT August 17, 08 03:13 AM
  1. Relax people. It seems pretty obvious Belichick told him he had a sore foot. Cassell needs time with the first team.

  1. I can't believe they can drop this bomb at 6 pm and the zillions of news teams that deluge everything NFL can't tell us any more.

This is when Belichick will drive even us local pats fans crazy. We'll probably hear NOTHING of substance on this injury, and just wonder if/when things go badly for Brady in the pocket like in the SB.

  1. Or maybe guys it just an excuse not to play in a meaningless exhibition game or to travel to tampa. Don't jump off the bridge yet by week 1 that sore foot will be fine.

Posted by larry August 17, 08 04:35 AM
  1. He'll be FINE!! He is the best QB in the world, he does not need to fly to Fla. to practice. Brilliant move by Coach B. to get the world talking about him instead of the best swimmer in the world!! Bring it on NFL!! 19-0 coming to you this season!!

  1. Kevin looked awesome last week; I am rooting for him tomorrow. BTW, is the game on TV? Did not see it listed.

  1. He will be fine. Everyone knows the media blows everything out of proportion.

  1. Don't forget Brady played a whole season a couple years ago with a separated shoulder. I don't think we need to worry about his foot when the real games begin. They are just letting the backups take the beatdown in preseason until the O-line can get healthy.

  1. Settle down ladies... remember Moss and his hurting hamstring in the preseason last year? Brady is fine...

  1. I'm guessing Belichick went to Brady and told him "by the way your foot is sore and will be all pre-season until the offensive line gets healthy."

Posted by Mike August 17, 08 09:51 AM
  1. Consider the fact that Moss didn't play in the preseason last year as an indication that this isn't necessarily a negative. I often feel teams that go to hard in the preseason, trying to prove something to themselves and their fan bases, give away too much of what they are going to do during the season. As a fan you want him to play so you can gauge where they are as a unit but maybe it's not always in their best interest.

    Posted by Sonny_Corlione August 17, 08 10:53 AM
  1. Would U play him behind that makeshift offensive line ? 2 of the 5 starters are
out right now. They also seem to want someone...anyone, to seize that backup
QB spot and they need to see these guys play to make a decision.

Ain't it obvious ? Probably won't see much of Moss and Welker again either.
Jackson on the other hand....NEEDS REPS. ASAP.

  1. Where are the real fans most of you sound like little whiny brats. Get a life its only the preseason. A lot of superstars don't play at all or at the most a few snaps.

  1. Hopefully whatever the problem is with his foot it heals by the time it really matters. One more thing....Tom, please, take the advice you gave ROMO Leave the girlfriend home, better yet dump her!!!! Maybe the results of the Super Bowl would have been different!

Posted by MNJM August 17, 08 04:09 PM
  1. Belichick could have planned this all along, hoping teams would send out scouts and make a big deal of this game, then not play Brady in a late decision.. More likely is that Brady may have dinged himself up and theres no reason to send him down there unless he is 100%.. If he was more seriously injured, we will know that in the next week or so if he does not participate at all in practices..
