EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – A look at who’s up and who’s down from the Patriots’ preseason finale against the Giants
Up
Jarvis Green – Defensive end comes up with a second-quarter sack and plays strong against the run.
Chris Hanson – Punter shows some nice pop, averaging 47.5 yards and a 39.2 net on six attempts.
Chad Jackson – Receiver has two catches for 32 yards and a nice 16-yard touchdown grab in the back left-hand corner of the end zone.
LaMont Jordan – He ended up recovering a fumble, which could have been costly, but runs hard in totaling 27 yards on six carries (4.5 avg.), and adds one catch for 23 yards.
Down
Wesley Britt – Second-string left tackle is beaten for one of the two sacks taken by Matt Gutierrez.
Fernando Bryant -- Shows poor form tackling and gets bull-rushed into the end zone on Darcy Johnson's 23-yard touchdown catch-and-run on the Giants' opening drive.
First-unit defense – Giants march 80 yards down the field for an opening touchdown, powering through the Patriots overmatched unit.
Matt Gutierrez – Quarterback can’t build off his solid effort against the Eagles, throwing an interception at the goal line, and finishing 5 of 9 for 69 yards.
James Sanders -- Misses a tackle on Darcy Johnson's 23-yard touchdown on the Giants' opening drive.

I would have guessed Gary Guyton would have been an obvious UP.... He was going to make it anyways, but he locked up his roster spot tonight. He was all over the place.
I would have expected O'Connell and Guyton to be on the Up side, they both had a pretty good game, at least from listening to the radio feed.
Ryan and IowaPatsFan. Good points on Guyton (10 tackles) and O'Connell (3 of 4, 22 yards, 1 TD). I have to watch the game again and I'll have a better feel. I was having some internet problems so I wasn't on top of everything.

All's good Mike, you got everyone else that comes to mind. Let us know what you see with Wilhite, it seemed like he was decent tonight, only credited with 2 stops. Shoate was absolutely horrible; Redd was decent again, and continues to be good on KO coverage.
Mike, thanks for keeping us long distant fans up to date on everything. It's hard not being able to watch the preseason games, from afar that is. Good work!
When I was listening to the feed, I kept hearing Hobson's name. Looking at the stats, I see he had 8 tackles. He'd have to be an "UP" also, don't ya think?
Mike you highlighted the Gutierrez pick in the up down but in reality shouldn't that pick fall squarely on the shoulders of Chad Jackson who fell down for no reason when the ball was already in the air? If his line was 6/9 for 79 yards and a touchdown it would have looked pretty good.
Hi Alex. I'll go back and watch the game today and fire a comment in here tonight. It's tough to tell sometimes when you're watching live.

yeah I also thought the INT by gutierrez was jackson's fault
no johnahan wilhite? i thought he looked pretty good
I agree with the others who mentioned Hobson, O'Connell, Guyton. They had an excellent game. I thought Shoate was really exposed, and the defense continues to play very flat. As for Jackson, any one can be bitten by the turf snake, it happens, it was unfortunate, but you cannot hold the player responsible. It would be different if he ran the wrong route or didn't challenge for a jump ball.
Mike, I would have to agree with the analysis on Jackson and Gutierrez. It seemed to me that when Jackson came upon his man, he was expecting his man to hit him and when his man backed up instead, it caught Jackson off balance and he lost control. Gutierrez had a timing type of throw called. A throw to a spot and at a certain time. That INT was not his fault. The ball was already in the air when Jackson stumbled.
By the way, unlike most, I do not fault Jackson terribly on the play either. The one complaint I had was that it took him so long to get back up after falling. I think he was trying to get a call for pass interference on that play.
In any case, from my uneducated view of the game, it seemed to me that Guyton was in a significant number of plays. I also thought Redd was making his presence felt in the game as well. Here's to hoping they both make it.
It is too early, but thus far I have not been impressed with Matthew Slater. As I said, it is way to early, and with the type of speed this kid has, he deserves a flyer. It seems like the speed of the game is a bit much for him right now. As he continues to play, things should slow down a bit for him and I think you will see some of his potential.
Wilhiite and Wheatly are definite keepers. How are you guys feeling about the Lynch signing? He was money in that game, and I expect that he will add a lot to this team. Especially on running plays.
Cheers
I ended up finally watching the game over late last night. It's hard to tell on the Gutierrez/Jackson INT, but Gutierrez had another near-interception and I felt his throws weren't as accurate as we saw the week before against the Eagles. Wilhite looks fast. Wheatley, too, but we knew that. Hobson had eight tackles, although three came on the game's final three plays. I noticed a difference in that Hobson seems to bounce off blocks from inside linebacker, while Guyton runs through them. In the end, I think Guyton will beat out Hobson. Redd was impressive. He's a big guy and if he can work on some quickness, I think he could be a keeper.
