Video: Gasper on defensive headsets

The Globe's Chris Gasper talks about the defensive headsets being introduced in the NFL this year and how the Patriots don't plan to use them in Thursday's exhibition opener.

  1. imo, they are just practicing getting the hand signals down because they will be the main line of communication for calling the play.. But why would they not use this new functionality at all during the season? It can't hurt, and it would provide a reassurance that the play was communicated correctly. I agree that only having one player on the field at a time will be confusing, so the Pats will probably use hand signals primarily and then headsets for verification. Perhaps only giving the headset to one (3 down) player the entire game so there is even less confusion.

    I'll start a rumor and say that they are planning on giving Vrabel the headset, and because he's not playing Thursday that's why they are using hand signals.
