What to watch vs. Tampa Bay

Posted by Chris Forsberg, Boston.com Staff August 15, 2008 09:45 AM

The Boston Globe's Mike Reiss and Chris Gasper each provide three things to watch when the Patriots travel to Tampa Bay for Sunday's exhibition game against the Buccaneers. (Click the link to watch the video or read a synopsis).

Mike Reiss's three things to watch:

  • The offensive line: This unit paralyzed the offense in the first exhibition game against the Ravens and Tampa Bay will provide another tough test.
  • Kevin O'Connell: After a solid showing against the Ravens, in which the rookie kept plays alive with his feet, can O'Connell continue to impress against the Bucs?
  • The rookie linebackers: All four rookies -- Jerod Mayo, Shawn Crable, Gary Guyton, and Vince Redd -- did good things against the Ravens.

Chris Gasper's three things to watch:

  • The offensive line: The backup quarterbacks didn't play well against Baltimore, but the line didn't make matters easy for them.
  • Players from the PUP list: LB Mike Vrabel and CB Ellis Hobbs should see their first game action.
  • Patriots' scheming: You don't see lot of scheming in preseason games, but the Bucs might mirror other teams the Pats play this season (including the Colts).

  1. Hi Mike,

After reviewing the game again, it is hard to put a lot of blame on Cassel since Chad Jackson seemed to not finish his routes. Is this a fair observation?

  1. Did you actually watch the video? THe part where he said "We may see Brady and the first unit longer than you would normally suspect" or something like that, tells me they think Brady will play.

I will be watching the O line. That unit worries me right now. If the O line can not give Brady time then so many other things fall apart, not to mention the chances of injury increase.

Looking for another solid night from the rookies. I would like to see another night of good play from these guys. It would increase the chances that we got some quality players from the draft. We could sure use some impact players on defense from this draft.

  1. Mike,

Do you think something will be done about the O-Line before the season starts? I really have heavy doubts about their ability to protect Brady. Why is it becoming so difficult to find O-Line players? I have a bad feeling it's going to be open season on Brady.

  1. I agree Jackson did play poorly, but that doesn't let Cassel off the hook in my opinion.........Can't wait to see the young lb's again. they were very good the first game.

The Lynch signing makes sense. I imagine that Lynch will play the same role they had pegged for Tank before he got hurt. BB always liked smart players.

  1. I know everyone is concerned about the OL and so am I. but remember we have yet to see all of the starters in there.. The line is makeshift right now so I'm not sure we can give them a fair grade.. WIth Brady starting, I almost guarantee a better effort from the OL..

  1. Tom's no dummy. He and his sore foot are staying home where he won't have to worry about playing behind a porous OL down here in Tampa.

  1. Source tell me that the Pats are actively shopping Cassell (should be able to get a 6th rond pick), otherwise he will be waived by end of August. No significant worries here about the O line; like at other positions they are easing the group in prep for regular season, including injury recovery time. Looks like 5 RB and 2 TE, so irrelevant anyway to the extent Bill is such a master at using guys in so many different roles. Strength will emerge from the secndary, though a bit unsettled right now, but how much does it matter with the variety of very strong front sevens they will have out there? Overall, the team is stronger than last year and they have the easiest schedule tn the league, so why be worried about any position. Why should the team's stars even break a sweat in August? Bill's just so far ahead of all other coaches and comes up with new wrinkles all the time, like the WIlliams-hyrid. The keys tonight are avoiding injuries and watching guys like Woods and hopefully Meriweather emerge.

  1. Relax about the O-line it's preseason and Neal hasn't gotten to even play yet. They'll be fine I think they were solid last year and one game doesn't make a season. These games only truly matter for the rookies and 2nd and 3rd string guys The Patriots will win at least 13 games this year. So just chill everyone.
