Tom Brady grimaces after being hit in the first quarter. (Jim Davis / Globe Staff)

The Patriots just announced that QB Tom Brady will not return to today's game.

Brady injured his left leg when Kansas City safety Bernard Pollard rolled into it during first-quarter action. Brady was looked at by members of the team's medical staff and limped off the field, but went straight to the locker room.

On the play, the Patriots were in a three-receiver formation and the Chiefs blitzed safety Bernard Pollard up the middle. Running back Sammy Morris seemed to ace his assignment by blocking Pollard and driving him into the turf.

But Pollard got up and rolled toward Brady, who had stepped into his throw.

Brady stayed on the ground, grabbing his left knee.

  1. Looks like a medial collatoral ligament tearing in that photo. Not a good thing, probably out for at least six weeks. If its a complete tear, probably gone for the season.

  1. Wasn't that obvious? Why bother?

This injury secrecy is really annoying at times.

  1. Well at least we'll have a high draft choice to look forward to next year. All the Patriot and Belichik haters should also be happy. So some people will be happy, but not the advertisers without the Boston market for the year or the saps who laid out for the Pats in the Stupor-bowl. C'est la vie and go Red Sox and Celts.

  1. The SEASON IS LOST !!! PERIOD!! Matt Cassell now is your chance to show
what everyone in New Engand except Bellicheck knows and have known since the first season you came to the team !!! You do not have the talent to be a first string quarterback in College ....only Belleccheck is arrogent enough to thionk he can imprve on what you don't have....Talent

  1. I just hope he is not done for the season. I still think with cassel win can win some games. Atleast with the easy schedule we have at the beginning. Let's pray to all gods he is not done for the season.

  1. Everyone should thank Reiss for the updates. When I need answers, I come here. And last time I checked, this was a team sport. Cassel seems to be holding up and the rest of the team has stepped up too.

  1. Relax. They've won a superbowl with a back-up QB before.

  1. Cassel is showing some good stuff. Let's see where this goes before we panic.

  1. unless there is a doctor in the house, chill, just chill!

if it were season and or career ending, he never would have walked (limped) off of the field.

  1. I thought it was illegal to roll to an opponent. I only read the Globe's description, so I do not have any more info than that. Can anyone clarify for me? Was there at least a penalty on the play? Should there have been?

  1. This is how Brady got his start.

The Matt Cassell era has now begun.

What happens if he takes them to the Super Bowl --and Brady is healthy?

I say--let Drew Bledsoe make the decision!

  1. Everybody put on your skates and enjoy the slide !! With Cassell at quarterback
Now the league will have the chance to see how terrible he is !!! Way to go Bill !!!
You really lucked out in the K.C game because they were mostly rookies !!
Wait till we play the Jetss....Way to go Bill.........Now the league will find out for real how you would have fared without Brady !!

  1. Just trying to be an optimist here. Do you think the Patriots medical staff would let Brady walk off the field, let alone down a flight of stairs if there was any thought of him having a serious knee injury? I'm thinking that they would have definitely brought out a cart and not let him put any pressure on that knee if there was a thought of torn ligaments, etc. I'm guessing slight sprain, Bradys back in 2 weeks, but then again, what do I know!

  1. Don't expect any announcement on Brady to come soon. Ill bet anything Coach B will say "we'll look at it and see" or "the injury report comes out Wednesday".

  1. Karma indeed. Looks like Brady should have tried to win that #1 parking space with his off season conditioning instead of toting Jinxelle's shopping bags around. As the Globe article pointed out, the man's gone Hollywood.

Glad to see Cassel's doing well.

  1. What a bunch of bandwagon jumpers. I admit, I did not want Cassel on this team after the pre-season and Tom Brady is my guy. But the second Brady went down I immediately became a Cassel fan.

Why? Cause he's the QB of the team I love.

It looks like Belichik make the right decision in keeping Cassel for the short term. I have confidence we can win the next two games, get Brady back week 5 or 6 and still win the whole frickin thing.

Let's clear the bandwagon and get on with the season. 1-0. Let's frickin' go.

  1. There is the worst bunch of sky is falling fair weather fans I have ever seen. In fact, BB was right in keeping Cassell when everyone was calling for him to be cut.

  1. Maybe if Brady spent more time in camp and less as a budding real estate mogul slash fashion model slash Giselle bag carrier he'd have remembered how to perform his patented slide move.

Obviously he cared little for football this summer.

Posted by kevin September 7, 08 04:46 PM
  1. Culpepper would be no upgrade as he refused to change his playing style after his big injury--definately not the Pat's kind of QB. Cassel will do fine.

  1. cassel barely did enough against the cheifs.we may get by miami with him.maybe frisco, and oakland.everyone else we will be in trouble.i love the optimisim, but the reality is we need a veteran if brady is done this season.the miracle of brady when bledsoe went down.wont happen with cassel.

Posted by Darryl September 7, 08 05:25 PM
  1. Cassel will be asked to do what Brady did in '01. Manage the game and don't do anything stupid, at least until Brady is healthy again.

Posted by Dan September 7, 08 05:26 PM
  1. JT - you're a moron thinking from that picture you can tell if he has an MCL tear. Unless you have MRI vision STFU.

As for everyone freakin' the eff out, calm down. Until we hear that he is out for X number of games, or is having season ending surgery CALM DOWN.

Is this ideal? Wanted? Expected? No. Cassel isn't Brady, we all know that. But why overreact before having any idea how serious it was?

For the record, I've seen guys tear ligaments and walk with a noticeable limp from Brady so that is no indication at all (the fact that he walked off the field and then down a flight of stairs).

For all the haters, you hate on the Pats because they are are always a solid team. They draft well. They attract marquee free agents. They don't overpay players, and when they leave town it never comes back to haunt us. They win Super Bowls. They are winners. Proven winners. We're sorry you are jealous of what our ownership/management/coaching staff/players have done. But don't relish in someone being hurt. It's very unbecoming and it's actually really sad and pathetic.

  1. According to Mike Silver of Yahoo sports, Brady has a torn ACL is out for the year. Where is Tony Eason these days?

  1. Matt Cassell is btter than Favre. He will win next week.

    Posted by Koko B-Ware September 7, 08 08:10 PM
  1. Karma is a bitch! Looks like the Pat's who thought they were unstoppable got side tracked. There has been only one team that has come back and won a Super Bowl with their backup QB. Odds are not looking good.
As for the rest of the season the teams the Pats ran up the score on they are going to do a little pay back this year. I hope you Pat's fan's have enjoyed your little Spygate Superbowl wins, those days are long gone. As for the cheating I always give the benefit of the doubt, but for the league to destroy those tapes and acted like its no big deal and that's a disgrace. If it wasn't a big deal let the public and other teams see them. If the Pats were my team I would be ashamed to be part of them. At least Tom Brady didn't leave as fast as Billicheat did during the Super last year.
As for the other saying that the non Pats fans are jealous, NO we just feel cheated the past seven years over the unfair play. You guys are in the same leagues as the Chinese Gynamstics team. Always wanting the edge in the game/sport. Learn from real teams with honor and glory that care about winning gracefully and respecting the other team. the play against. Acknowledging when the the other team makes a good play, rather then blame others. True to every Boston/New England sports fan. No wonder is the worst place to play in.
