Brown would put off retirement
FOXBOROUGH -- The Patriots held their induction/re-induction ceremony for the 13 players that are honored in the team's new Hall at Patriot Place, an interactive homage to the franchise's history and legacy.
One player who will be there someday soon is Troy Brown.
Former Patriots tight end Ben Coates, who was honored yesterday as the 13th and newest Patriots Hall of Famer and the first to have his induction ceremony at the newly opened Hall, said that he spoke with Brown on Friday and claimed retirement is not a complete fait accompli for Brown.
"I think Troy wants to play a little bit more," said Coates, wearing the red blazer all the inductees received. "I talked to Troy last night for a minute, and I think he stills want to play a little bit more. I think that right now he has to come to his conclusion. He's either going to make a decision to keep playing or let it go."
However, a source close to Brown said today that it's likely that the beloved receiver will announce his retirement soon and take a media job, as the Boston Herald reported in its blog on Friday. The source said Brown plans to take out an ad in the Boston newspapers thanking the fans for their support during his 15-year career.
The source said that "nothing is written in stone" though and that Brown, New England's all-time leader in receptions with 557, would play again if the Patriots came calling.
The source said Brown has reached the point where he would only postpone retirement to play for the Patriots, the team he suited up for the last 15 seasons. He would not play for another team.
Patriots owner Robert Kraft, who met with Brown on Thursday, hinted that he'd like to find a role for Brown in the organization.
"Troy Brown is the prototype of what I'd like every Patriot to be," said Kraft. "...Just the kind of person he is. I hope the fans agree that when he is eligible he'll have one of these red jackets. We'll see what happens. Our people have to chat with him. You look at all the great players even [Joe] Montana, [Brett] Favre, a year or two they go somewhere and they finish. You don't remember that. You don't think of Joe Montana as a Chief."

troy needs to retire a patriot! if troy could get back to his '06 form at least he'd be great to have on the field to help cassel out. wes welker and troy brown on the field would be sick. i would love to see troy on the sidelines as a coach of some sort.
Troy Brown is probably my all time favorite Patriot. He's bridged the years between the mid nineties teams and the SB winning teams, he's always contributed whatever has been asked, and he's come up big in big games. Tough and dependable.
There's so much to like about the guy, but most of all he's always represented himself and his family, the Patriots and the league, with great humility and character. In a world of me first phonies, Troy Brown is the real thing.
OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR. They really could use one.
rob, i couldn't agree more. he is a total class act. on the field and off. to me he is how i picture the "perfect patriot". can't wait for when he gets his day to be honored for what he achieved for our team!
thank you for all your class and dedication, troy brown. you truly are a legend in this sport :)
Hey Mr. Kraft, I'm sure the fans would agree to waive the years retired requirement today to give Troy his red jacket today. One of, if not the, best players to even done a Patriots uniform. Good luck to you Troy in all that you do and thank you for your years of loyal service to the team we love!
