Green with envy

If schadenfreude is your thing, you're sure to enjoy the New York papers today in the aftermath of the Patriots' 19-10 victory over the Jets. A few quick links:

The Post's Mike Vaccaro plays the voice of reason with a piece titled "No shame in losing to Brady-less Pats," while Steve Serby isn't quite so measured, cutting to the chase in his second paragraph:

Bill Belichick . . . devoured Eric Mangini alive yesterday and made Brett Favre look like just another 38-year-old quarterback going on 39.

The Daily News's Gary Myers also points the finger at Mangini, blaming him for not playing to Favre's strengths and asking, "Why is he coaching like he still has Chad Pennington?"

The Times' George Vescey notes that the Patriots had Jets fans scurrying for an early exit, something Favre rarely witnessed during his time with the Packers.

Among national writers, Sports Illustrated's Peter King has the best synopsis of Matt Cassel's performance, closing with this observation:

Bill Belichick wants Cassel to steer the ship. In the Meadowlands, he led the Patriots to five scoring drives in eight possessions, and on the ninth and final possession of the day, he did what the Patriots dreamed he'd do but probably didn't think actually would happen. He knelt on the ball for the final play of the game, before a two-thirds-empty stadium.

ESPN's John Clayton praises the performance, yet remains skeptical:

The Patriots are still the team to beat in the AFC East, but boy, do they look beatable.

  1. Chicken-man Clayton ... I miss Salisbury ripping him apart, calling him the crypt-keeper...ESPN has gone down the tubes in terms of sports commentary

  1. I'm extremely happy with the gutsy win...but I think Peter King made a better point about Cassel that you didn't mention. It is as follows:

A cautious player. He'll eventually have to take some chances and be bolder. If he doesn't, New England will lose games against teams with competent defenses that have productive offensive days. But for now, cautious is better than impetuous.

Matt is going to have to prove he can make those 15-20 yard slant and incut throws as well as the go routes to Moss to scare the opposing secondary a bit. If not, safeties will be all over the line of scrimmage...that's a bad thing

  1. It may be an indulgence in an immature part of my psyche, but I have a bottomless stomach when it comes to my appetite for Jets/Jet fans' misery!

  1. With juvenile optimism I chimed in last week that the Pats could do worse than give rookie Kevin O'Connell the reigns to the team. Even though he seems to want to run when plays break down, he appears to have a pedigree that Cassel lacks; however, this is Cassel's team and I am not the least bit surprised that he manged the game against the Jets so well. Aside from Brady's ability to get the ball away so quickly, Cassel did a pretty god job of imitating the future hall-of-famer during his first couple of starts in 2001. How Cassel improves will be the standard by which he is judged, for now I admit that my reasoning appeared desperate.

The offensive line has a significant gap, once-every -hree-plays and the defense gave up chunks of yards, but both of those areas seem to improve as the season progresses. The Jets looked weak offensively, but I could care less what the New York scribes write, afterall the Yankees really helped us out this weekend!

  1. I think the coaching staff realize that for this game, and maybe for the next two, they can afford to keep the training wheels on Cassel. As he plays more and gets more comfortable, they'll slowly let him start airing it out. You know, kind of like they did with Brady when he was still an untested QB.

  1. Does John Clayton ever bring anything interesting to the table? What kind of comment is "boy do they look beatable..." ? What a moron.....

  1. I agree about Clayton. Did he watch any of the Indy, Broncos, Chargers (who got beat), Jacksonville or Pittsburgh games?

All five of those teams barely won or lost. Add our Patriots to those 5 and you've got the six pre-season favorites for the post-season.

Gee John, maybe try adding a little insight.

Reiss, Gasper, keep up the great work.

  1. from now on when you see the patriots on your schedule do yourself a favor and mark the board with a big L......because you'll never get a W against us......with or without brady seriously the only difference between the pats and the jets are the coaches.....jets and pats are basically the same team we trade players all the time,,,,but all the time you guys still lose......its sad...anyways hahahahahahaha again.......

  1. "Bill Belichick . . . devoured Eric Mangini alive yesterday and made Brett Favre look like just another 38-year-old quarterback going on 39."

What did they think they were getting in Favre? That's exactly what he is, a 38-year-old going on 39, who in a fluke performance, put up MVP-like numbers in 2007. Did they expect Favre to perform like he did 10 years ago? Then they're delusional. Just as they were when they hired Mangini, thinking a guy with so little NFL experience could bring them to stardom!

The Jets' toilet franchise doesn't have the Belichick-Pioli vision to see that they're no better off with Favre instead of Clemens at QB.

  1. Did anybody happen to notice how 'worked-up' Tom Jackson was on Countdown? How disappointed is this tool today?

  1. Maybe people will now realize that week 1 was not the time to jump off the pats ship? Did history not teach us anything? I saw a breakdown today of #16 vs #12 breaking down the first starts for both players. Cassel actually did better then Brady did against the colts that day!

We are used to having our MVP at the helms, clearly one of the best QB's of all time, but dont forget we have been through the fires before. We know how to win, and we have done it before with a bunch of rag tag players. Thats Boston for you though, we may not have all of the big name players, but we have the dirt dogs. Players willing to grind it out and keep on pluggin till they get the result they are looking for. I for one hope that this can be Cassel's chance. If he can string together win by win, and have a good year, this may be the chance this kid has been waiting for.

Take the 2008 season for what it is. If they dont make the playoffs, or if they dont win the big game in Feb. enjoy what you have now! This is football season and I am gonna enjoy every moment of it. Rest assured, even if the 2008 Patriots were to become Superbowl Champions, you know next year #12 will be back under center. Look forward to that

  1. Let's not forget that ESPN is a tool box. Remember how they whined about the videotaping all season long last year? That being said, I hope the sportswriters keep doubting the Patriots. If anything rings true during the Belichick era, the team thrives as an underdog. Tell them they can't do it, and they will just to say Eff-You. But really, what were they thinking? Brett Favre threw up a jump ball, and the Jets beat Miami. Oh wow! I'm so impressed! Not. Fricking Miami won ONE game last year, and everyone went on like the Jets were going to go to the Super Bowl. Give me a break. It's a long season. Take it one game at a time, and the Pats will prevail. At least you know it's always going to be fun watching them play. Guys, we are so lucky to be watching all of this happen. For such a seemingly serious guy, Bill Belichick has given us some of the best times any sports fan could hope for.

  1. Funny, as recently as Saturday many of the pundits (ie, Clayton etc) were picking the Jets to win the AFC East ...
