Gutierrez in; Jones out
The Patriots officially announced that QB Matt Gutierrez was promoted to the 53-man roster tonight. To make room for him on the roster, the team released WR C.J. Jones.

can they sign cj jones to the practice squad if no one claims him
Yes CJ Jones still has practice squad eligibility.

I'm pretty sure they can. If I remember right, they had Bam Childress on the active roster, released him, and then signed him to the practice squad within the same season.
Probably but couldnt they have just transfered him to the practice squad because the season has already started? or do they have to cut him?
Jason,
I believe CJ Jones is eligible for the PC. He was on the Browns roster for 10 games in 2003 but was inactive for all 10 so he doesn't have an accrued season under his belt yet and he was also inactive for Week 1 w/the Pats this season. In addition, although he has been a practice squad player for 2 yrs the Patriots have all spots on the 53 man roster filled so he is eligible for a 3rd season with the Patriots and any club with maxed roster of 53.
Jones showed me something. Sorry to see him go.
Andrew,
You can't 'transfer' a player to your practice squad -- you have to cut him. If the player then chooses to sign onto your practice squad he can do so, but he can also sign with another team (for that team's 53-man roster or its practice squad). It's up to the player, ultimately. NFL contracts are not like MLB ones, which allow for moving a player up and down through the organizations levels (A, AA, AAA, major league) while retaining control of the player with 'options,' etc.; NFL contracts are set-to-roster only (i.e., you're signed to the 53-man roster, or the practice squad, but there's no connection; even moving up from the taxi squad is technially a different contract).
Will the owner of the game-day jersey that Matt Gutierrez wore when playing for Idaho State please contact CollegeJersey.com - - Thank you.
