EXTRA POINT: Patriots players are off today. Coach Bill Belichick is scheduled to hold a conference call around noon.
Mike Reiss, Christopher L. Gasper and the rest of the Globe team provide regular updates –and a behind-the-scenes look– on the daily happenings of the Patriots.

Oneal is a terrific pick-up...I think you missed a couple of players ,one of them a rookie....Sean Crable and Pierre Wood both will see a lot of action and be real productive......Defensively I think this was one of the best drafts in Patriots history...
Mayo and Wheatley will start..
Mike, you have it backwards. In 2002, teams were faking the end-around and running dive plays up the gut. Steve Martin had been brought in to man the nose, and he lasted about six weeks. Bobby Hamilton then played out of position at the nose the rest of the season, with little improvement. The next year they got Ted Washington late in camp to address that hole and they romped to a 14-2 season, starting an 18 game winning streak in the process.
