Every Tuesday, questions from Patriots fans are answered as part of a weekly mailbag on Boston.com. This week's mailbag has been posted and includes some of the following topics:

  • A look at new cornerback Deltha O'Neal and why things didn't work out for him in Cincinnati.

  • The surprising release of veteran safety John Lynch.

  • Breaking down thoughts on the final roster, from Matt Cassel sticking, to Chad Jackson being released.

  • Highlighting the most alarming aspect of the team's 0-4 preseason: desire.

  • A look at rookies Jerod Mayo and Terrence Wheatley, and if they can step right into the starting lineup.

EXTRA POINT: Patriots players are off today. Coach Bill Belichick is scheduled to hold a conference call around noon.

    1. Oneal is a terrific pick-up...I think you missed a couple of players ,one of them a rookie....Sean Crable and Pierre Wood both will see a lot of action and be real productive......Defensively I think this was one of the best drafts in Patriots history...
      Mayo and Wheatley will start..

    1. Mike, you have it backwards. In 2002, teams were faking the end-around and running dive plays up the gut. Steve Martin had been brought in to man the nose, and he lasted about six weeks. Bobby Hamilton then played out of position at the nose the rest of the season, with little improvement. The next year they got Ted Washington late in camp to address that hole and they romped to a 14-2 season, starting an 18 game winning streak in the process.
