Every Tuesday on Boston.com, questions from Patriots fans are answered as part of a weekly mailbag. This week's mailbag has been posted and includes some of the following topics:
Could this regular-season victory be the most meaningful in Bill Belichick's nine years as coach?
A closer look at how the defense has responded with less margin for error.
Wondering if the managing-the-game offensive approach will continue, or if the passing game will open up for Matt Cassel in the ensuing weeks.
Noting the value of running back Kevin Faulk and recapping his contract situation.
Asking whether RB Laurence Maroney is still improving in his third year in the system.
Mike,
Hobbs was probably asked to play off the receiver by the coaches and not a fault of himself. I never understand why they do this as Hobbs and most of the DBs are known for their speed and quick recovery abilities. Have him play closer to the WR, prevent the easy 10 yard pass, and don't worry as much about the deep ball.
Fair point, Andy M. It's why I think football is a difficult game to write about. It's difficult to determine if he was playing off on his own, if he should have reacted quicker etc. I'll look forward to asking him this week. As for the most meaningful regular-season games in Bill Belichick's nine years as Patriots coach, I wish I added one more. Sept. 16, 2007 -- Patriots 38, Chargers 14. The win after the Spygate week.

The #1 regular-season game in Bill Belichick's career? It's not even close -- the victory over the Chargers in week 2 last year. This was the critical game which showed that we were not going to let the Spygate scandal-in-a-teapot destroy this team. I mean, Sunday was great, but let's give Matt Cassell a few more games before we carve him out a spot on Mount Rushmore...
Hi Steve. Certainly not propping up Cassel up there. That's not what I'm saying. But I think this was a pass-the-torch type of game. People expecting the Jets to take over the AFC East from the Patriots. Not to be. Also, doing it without Brady makes it particularly meaningful.
