Mangini on Cassel

Posted by Chad Finn, Globe Staff September 10, 2008 12:58 PM

Here is Jets coach Eric Mangini's response when asked on a conference call today about the differences in preparing for Matt Cassel rather than Tom Brady:

"The week hasn't really dramatically shifted. Obviously, things are going to change in terms of his style versus Tom's style. You can't really replace a player of Tom's caliber, but I think that that offensive system is really loaded and very efficient.

"I thought that Matt came in and did a great job [on Sunday]. Hitting the 51-yarder from [being] backed up shows how confident they are in him. Then the touchdown to Moss, and going 13 for 18, [116] quarterback rating.

"I thought Matt did a very good job, and knowing Matt from being there, I know how hard he's worked in his role as a backup. I assume he'll be extremely efficient."

Mangini was the Patriots' defensive coordinator in 2005, Cassel's rookie season.
