Gutierrez to practice squad

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff September 10, 2008 10:51 AM

The Patriots signed QB Matt Gutierrez to their practice squad today.

Gutierrez had been with the club last season and through 2008 training camp. He played in five games last season, completing his lone pass attempt for for 15 yards. His knowledge of the team's system likely made him the team's top choice to bolster the depth at quarterback.

The Patriots have just two quarterbacks on their active roster -- Matt Cassel and rookie Kevin O'Connell.

The team also announced that punter Tom Malone had been signed to the practice squad. He was a member of the Patriots' practice squad late in the 2006 season and was with the team for its 2007 training camp.

Safety Mark Dillard was released from the practice squad.

  1. Nice to see Gutz back on the roster.

So say Cassel stinks it up the next couple of games. Who will we bring in at that point? Or do you think we start Gutz?

  1. The Pats added two players to the practice squad and cut one..

Was another player cut from the practice squad recently?

    Hodges?

  1. that doesn't answer the question of who will be our third QB this week? I am not sure the safest way to go is having a rookie relieve Cassel if he is not throwing well.

  1. Mike, perhaps I missed it, but have the Patriots officially signed someone to take Tom Brady's place on the 53 man roster? Also, any indication Lynch could be resigned this week?

  1. Tom Malone looks like he could be a really great NFL punter if given the chance a former USC standout. Mike how did he lose out on the job last year with the Pats, I know it went down to the wire? And is he still wearing #1.

I known he played for the University of Southern California with Mart Leinart and Lofa Tatupu from 2002-05, where he recorded a 44.0-yard career punting average and placed 95 of his 185 career punts inside the 20-yard line. Malone was a two-time semifinalist for the Ray Guy Award - given to the nation’s top punter - and set a school record in 2003 by averaging 49.0 yards per punt.

  1. How are practice squad players paid? Are there any minimums? Given there is so much movement on a practice squad are they paid by the day, week, etc.?

  1. it is very risky to only enter a game with two qb's especially if one of them is a third-round pick in his first season. if they activate gutierrez to the active roster and have o'connell and the 3rd string qb, it only counts as 2 on the game-day roster of 53 and they are protected from an injury.

Who's the fourth string QB? Can we get Troy Brown back?

  1. Gutierrez is better than Cassel

  1. Faulk filled Brady's roster slot.

To me this means the pats are pretty serious about not looking for another QB who's retired/free agent.

  1. Pats now have 2 QB's that know the full playbook as opposed to bringing in a vet that would have a limited offense.....this way Pats get to use all their offensive weps......

Putting O'Connell in for tailor made plays for his skillset might even be an option.

Sure makes this season exciting as a Pats fan.... ....No more easy games....

  1. Gutierrez knows the system better than O'connell so shouldn't Gutierrez be 2nd QB and O'connell the rookie be in practice squad?

  1. Gutierrez will wind up number one in the long run if he stays with the Pats. Remember, one of those interceptions was the receiver falling down in the end zone. I was hoping that he would have signed out here with the 49ers. The local press knows how to spell his name and pronounce it at least.
