Moss absent from practice

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff September 10, 2008 01:12 PM

FOXBOROUGH -- The Patriots are holding their afternoon practice on the lower field behind Gillette Stadium. The practice is being held in full pads, and the following players have not been spotted during the media-access portion of the session: wide receiver Jabar Gaffney, wide receiver Randy Moss, tight end Benjamin Watson, wide receiver Sam Aiken.

Reserve center/guard Dan Connolly returned to practice for the first time in a few weeks.

Later today, the Patriots will release their participation report and at that time more information should be learned about the absence of Moss.

Both Watson and Aiken missed last week's game against the Kansas City Chiefs with knee injuries. Gaffney was present in the locker room prior to practice.

  1. I have a friend that works for the Patriots Pro Shop. He said that Matt Cassel is even better than Tom Brady just from what he's seen over the years. He mentioned that Cassel will probably be the surprise pick for the Pro Bowl this year. Load up on the 20-1 odds for the Pats to win the Superbowl this year. With the best offense in the league and the best defense, we won't be stopped!!

  1. It's because he hates Cassel, isn't it.

  1. MATT CASSEL IS NOT TOM BRADY HE IS MATT CASSEL, A PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL PLAYER THAT I EXPECT WILL PLAY LIKE ONE. COACH HAS HIM AS HIS BEST OPTION, SO SHOW SOME SUPPORT AND THINK POSITIVE.

  1. Pats Fan 2008, if what your friend turns out to be accurate, he should quit his job at the Pro Shop and get a job scouting. I sure hope he's on the right track. I love your enthusiasm!

  1. To Pats Fan 2008: I assume that your friend is Matt Cassel's father????

  1. Great! Your buddy in the pro shop thinks Cassel is better than Brady, he must have a keen eye for NFL talent if he has a job like that with the Pats!

  1. Anyone who has any knowledge about Bill Belichick knows that if Matt Cassell were better than Tom Brady he'd be playing QB instead of Brady. All of which goes to show why your friend is working in the Pro Shop and not coaching the Patriots.

  1. HAHA! Well, my friend works a Bass Pro Shop and he said Brady is faking it.

  1. Let's not get delirious here. The Pats brain trust knew what they had in Brady all along; that is why they drafted him when every other asleep-at-the-wheel GM passed on him. Brady was going to be the man in 2001, even had Bledsoe stayed healthy. It was inevitible; Bledsoe's injury just speeded the process. BB was sold on Brady, and with good reason. Now, lets get one thing straight: nobody, NOBODY is going to replace the best QB in the NFL right now. All we can do is hope Cassel holds his own and does no worse than QB's holding the fort for 75% of the other NFL teams. Wish Brady a speedy recovery and hope that Cassel proves to be a good #2. That is all we can expect. Pro Shops don't breed scouting geniuses, OK? To say that clown knows more than Belichick and Pioli is
    ridiculous.

  1. I have a friend who works in a hair salon. He said that Matt Cassell has a good head of hair. I'm not sure if that helps the Patriots, but it sure is interesting.

  1. Pats Fan 2008: If Matt Cassel is at the Pro Bowl, he'll be watching from the stands. Or maybe he'll be lucky enough to have a sidelines pass. He sure as hell won't be throwing a pass during the game. I think your buddy's spending too much time talking to the bobbleheads in the Pro Shop.

  1. I have a friend that cleans the toilets in Gillette and he said that Cassell's stool is more stream lined than Brady's (probably from all that man love) and that everyone knows the texture of stool is a good borometer of a a QB.

    GO PATS

  1. If Matt Cassel is better than Tom Brady, then Vince Young has his head on straight. Matt Cassel has never even started an NFL game, let alone ANY games since 1999 when he was still in high school. Vince Young has shown the world that talent is worthless if you can't mentally be an NFL quarterback. Brady proved the same thing in 2001. Cassel is a total wild card at this point, he could be the ace of spades we need or he could just be another worthless joker. Who knows?

  1. as much as i want cassell to do well i just hope they wont have him replace brady if cassell by some miracle leads us to a ring...

  1. Well, your "friend" also said my sweatshirt should be fine in a medium. Turns out I should have got the large. Hope he knows quarterbacks better than sweatshirts.

I have faith that Cassel will do just fine. I don't think he would have stuck around this long if he couldn't run the offense.

  1. Mike,

Why would you approve some of the posts above? It's just disgusting...thought you had better taste than this.

  1. That's funny, I could have sworn I saw Bill B selling shirts at the pro shop the other day and some strang guy running practic.

There is a reason that Cassell is a backup.

Posted by joe September 10, 08 04:43 PM
  1. Cassell should do pretty decent as soon as he gets comfortable. He has a good line, and that usually makes a NFL QB look pretty decent.

  1. Sofachi,
Let's not revise history. The Pats passed over Brady just like every other team for 5 rounds and picked him up only in the 6th round. Also, Brady was 4th on the depth chart in 2000 and made the team only because the Pats did not have enough good players at other positions to fill roster spots. Can you imagine carrying 4 QBs on the 53 man roster in the NFL today?

  1. Your "Pro Shop friend" has no clue about Cassell, but your post is right about one thing: at 20:1 putting $100 or a grand on the Pats is a bet worth the risk. How often do you get those odds on a team this good. Could turn out to be the easiest fortune I make since I got 14:1 on the '01 Pats before the Steelers game.

Anyone know the odds for winning AFC East .. that's a steal with the prevailing attitude across the country, but act fast since after the Pats put in a performance similar to the SD game last year following SpyGate, Vegas will figure it out.

  1. Funny. If Bill thinks Cassell can do the job, who am I to doubt him?

  1. Hi Scorpio. "Comments" have become a real issue for me. I simply can not keep up with them so I've just been posting them all. It will probably end up being a situation where we discontinue comments, but for now, with most of the onus falling on me to monitor them, I just see no other option. It's too bad because I want an interactive forum, but monitoring the comments is basically a full-time job. Thanks for the understanding.

  1. All of you "NEGATIVE, KNOW-IT ALLS" why are you so damn rude when other people write something that they have heard?
Is there any need to be rude? or is that just that you're all REAL football fans, and "wannabees"
It is a B*tCH to be know it alls huh?
I suppose you are all inside Brady's head knowing exactly, how, when and where
    he makes his moves...How dumb!
I have heard of star-struck people but this is so dumb from Wussy guys!

  1. PLEASE DO NOT REMOVE COMMENTS. The truth is because of the level of anonymity the internet, message boards, forums, etc provide there are going to be jackarses that will say anything that happens to float through their head. It may be slightly profane or entirely dumb. Removing comments section all together is punishing the many because of the few. Get over it people. This is nothing new or unique to Reiss' Pieces.

If you don't support free speech and free expression then please feel free to TURN OFF YOUR COMPUTER, DON'T COME TO THE MESSAGE BOARDS, OR MOVE TO THE Middle East. I heard land is cheap right now.

  1. Boston is home to the world's biggest crybabies. "Oh poor us!!! Our precious Hollywood quarterback went down and hurt his knee!!!! Waaaahhhh!!!!"

And then when one of your fellow knuckleheads makes an optimistic comment about Brady's replacement, you crucify him. It's sad, really.

Didn't Dan Shaugnessy write that when the Red Sox finally won the world series the city would shut down because no one would have anything to complain about? He sure was wrong!!! What the hell is wrong with you knuckleheads!! Boston has won six (6) championships since January 2002. You knuckleheads are like spoiled little children.

  1. You so called Pats fans crack me up. The ones who are posting here were at the game right? You got loud on the last play of the game. THE LAST PLAY. I've been to a K.C. Pats game in K.C. and you can't hear the person next to you when their defense is on the field, the whole game. You call yourself fans but you sit and wait for something to happen and then you cheer. Read what the players have said about you in the past, I'll say it for them YOU'R PATHETIC. Get off your asses and cheer when the defense is on the field, I saw a message on the score board that said "Quiet Offense at work", you had no problem with that. Let the defense know you care. Let them feel like they have a HOME FIELD advantage. It doesn't snow for every game. Be loud. I've been to a lot of away games and I can honestly say you all are the quietest most uninspired bunch of fans in football. Stop your whining , we have a new QB in town. Get behind him. Let the team know your at the game. It's all good we are PATRIOTS FANS. The players need to know your there.COME ON NEW ENGLAND STAND UP AND BE CHEER.

  1. Mike,

I bet there are plenty of journalism school interns or otherwise responsible people who would volunteer for an unpaid position with Boston.com monitoring the comments to weed out the useless stuff. It's a job someone could do from their own home. Of course you'd have to find someone you trusted to some degree. Rejecting the most foolish stuff makes the comments much more readable and enjoyable.

  1. Matt won the game. As Rodney Harrison said after the 31-0 blowout against Buffalo, which led to the big season, "No one is going to feel sorry for us."
If the team gets behind Matt, we'll have a good season. How good remains to be seen.
