FOXBOROUGH -- A few more pre-game nuggets from Gillette:
A white banner with red and blue writing that reads "New England Patriots -- 16-0 regular-season record, 2007" is hanging in a corner on the north side of the field. It is across the field from the team's three Super Bowl banners, creating a distinct separation between the four accomplishments.
From a media perspective, there is a lighter-than-normal group of national reporters expected to be in attendance. CBS Sportsline, ESPN.com, USA Today, the New York Times and the New York Daily News have assigned seats in the press box. But most of the national focus seems to be on the Dolphins-Jets game.
Scouts from the Raiders and Jets are expected to be in attendance. The Patriots visit the Jets next week, while the Chiefs host the Raiders.
Today's television broadcast on CBS will be handled by Greg Gumbel (play-by-play) and Dan Dierdorf (color commentator).
A pre-game flyover is scheduled from the Barnes Air National Guard Base in Westfield, Mass.
The national anthem will be performed by "Voices of Freedom", an eight-part a cappella vocal ensemble.
The GameDay magazine being sold at the stadium has a color picture of receiver Randy Moss on the cover, with black and white photos of former Patriots Stanley Morgan and Jim Colclough flanking Moss. The words read "Patriots Yesterday, Today, Forever."
The SB debacle ruined the 2007 season...and rendered the Pats 16-0 record all but meaningless. I'm sure that the Patriot players feel the same way. That stupid banner serves as a painful reminder to Pats fans of the worst loss in team history...and should be removed.
I'm glad Mike Reiss is a professional sports writer and not part of the "Lap Dog" group heading to Florida
That banner will serve as motivation and a reminder for this year's team.
