Nuggets from Gillette

FOXBOROUGH -- Patriots coach Bill Belichick held his Wednesday press conference (10:50 a.m.) and media members had access to the locker room (11:10-11:55 a.m.) this morning at Gillette Stadium. Here were a few items of note:

  • 1) Preparing for a new-look Dolphins team. Belichick made the point that this week is similar to the season-opener against the Chiefs in that the Dolphins have several new, young faces. Belichick believes the Dolphins are improved from last year's 1-15 campaign. He also said: "In a way, it just doesn't seem the same standing up here talking about the Dolphins and not going on about [Jason] Taylor and [Zach] Thomas."

  • 2) Stephen Gostkowski draws a crowd. In Sunday's win over the Jets, kicker Stephen Gostkowski showed how a player at his position can be a major weapon in a game by booming five kickoffs and four field goals. Gostkowski was an offseason award winner, and he answered questions from reporters for more than 10 minutes today. "It's always fun to hit a touchback," he said. "Every time you get one, it's a pretty rewarding feeling."

  • 3) Dolphins CB Will Allen a top player who doesn't garner much attention. Now in his eighth season out of Syracuse, Dolphins CB Will Allen isn't often mentioned among the game's elite players at his position. It sounds as if Bill Belichick believes he should be. "Will Allen is one of the best corners that we'll see this year," he said.

  • 4) Rodney Harrison has some fun with Ellis Hobbs. While CB Ellis Hobbs was holding court with reporters today, safety Rodney Harrison crouched behind a few members of the press and snuck in a question. "Ellis, do you think you're playing well enough to go to the Pro Bowl?" Harrison asked. Hobbs sorted through the crowd and laughed as he realized it was Harrison. Later, he was asked his thoughts on Harrison's question. "He's a weasel," Hobbs cracked.
