Nuggets from Gillette

FOXBOROUGH – Patriots coach Bill Belichick held his daily press conference (10:45 a.m.) and media members had access to the locker room (11-11:45 a.m.) today at Gillette Stadium. Here were a few items of note:

  • 1) Zone coverage in pass defense an area of focus. Coach Bill Belichick explained that this week’s practices on Wednesday and Thursday are a combination between “generic” things the team must work on over the season’s final 13 games, and the club’s next game, Oct. 5 against the 49ers. Among the areas of work Belichick mentioned, one that stood out was pass defense, specifically in zone coverage. The defense seemed to struggle in that area against the Dolphins.

  • 2) Pausing for some quick baseball talk. At the end of his opening remarks, Bill Belichick switched from football to baseball. “I congratulate the Red Sox on another playoff appearance, in whatever capacity that ends up being. I wish them well. I hope the winning continues.”

  • 3) Belichick on the Maurice Price signing. Asked what the team sees in free-agent signee Maurice Price, Belichick said: “He’s a bigger guy. Most of his production came offensively at Kansas City in preseason. We got a good look at him. Then he didn’t play in the last preseason game or against us [in the season opener], but we saw quite a bit of him [before that]. Big kid. Catches the ball well. Was productive for them this year in preseason. We worked him out yesterday and signed him to the roster today.”

  • 4) Maurice Price – jersey No. 17. Price was in the locker room and answered questions from reporters. He will wear jersey No. 17. “It does a lot for my confidence,” Price said of the Patriots’ interest. “Coming from a small school [Charleston Southern], the only player from my school to make it to the NFL, it says that I have an opportunity regardless of where I came from, so it does a lot for my confidence.”
