Offensive participation

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff September 15, 2008 08:45 AM

A look at the offensive participation of Patriots skill-position players in the team's 19-10 victory over the Jets:

  • TE David Thomas -- 59 of 59 snaps
  • WR Randy Moss -- 53 of 59
  • WR Wes Welker -- 53 of 59
  • WR Jabar Gaffney -- 26 of 59
  • FB Heath Evans -- 26 of 59
  • RB Sammy Morris -- 21 of 59
  • RB Kevin Faulk -- 16 of 59
  • RB LaMont Jordan -- 15 of 59
  • RB Laurence Maroney -- 14 of 59
  • TE Stephen Spach -- 6 of 59
  • TE Mike Vrabel -- 1 of 59
  • WR Ray Ventrone -- 1 of 59

ANALYSIS: The overall performance highlighted the depth and versatility of the team's running backs, as all five had double-digit snaps. ... It is interesting to note that Heath Evans played more snaps than any back, and while he was usually in a lead-blocking fullback-type role, he was also split out wide at times. ... LaMont Jordan did not play in the first six series, before coming on for the team's final three drives, and his fresh legs provided a boost. ... In never leaving the field, tight end David Thomas displayed that his conditioning is top-notch. That's a durable effort from a player who has battled a knock of not being durable. ... The Patriots primarily utilized just three receivers in the game -- Randy Moss, Wes Welker and Jabar Gaffney. ... While some might characterize Welker as a slot receiver, in this game he played in two-receiver packages. ... Mike Vrabel was the team's third tight end, playing on the goal-line. ... Ray Ventrone played one snap on the Patriots' final series, as the team was running out the clock.

    1. Cassel needed to throw it away more. He took some sacks he didn't need to, and scrambled a little too much.

He didn't throw any INTs and that's good enough.

    1. Moss was not smiling at the end of the game.
He is a beast that needs to be fed.
Matt needs to figure out what he is doing in the pocket first
Then he needs to start getting Randy involved

    1. Did the O-line stay the same the whole game? Am I the only one who noticed that on the Jets first scoreing drive, the ball was snapped after the play clock had expired on the longest play? Gee Mike, if you speek to Matt, please tell him not to keep his eyes glued to one receiver, he has to look off the safety once in a while.

    1. Wow David Thomas is really healthy this year given all the snaps he played.. I thought he should be fed more being more of an receiving TE same thing with Randy, he should have some touches..

Matt really need to throw more deep balls but the game says he is playing on the coaches game plan. Yeah he didn't had an interception or such error but given the offense they have, they should have scored more..Also don't settle too much with FG's rather than TD's..He has Randy, Wes and co. to do the catching..They really played conservative but an effective game...

But Matt had a great game..hope he keeps it up..

      GO PATS...
