Patriots agree to terms with WR Maurice Price

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff September 23, 2008 08:40 PM

The Patriots agreed to terms with free-agent receiver Maurice Price, filling the 53rd spot on their roster, according to a league source.

Price, a second-year player out of Charleston Southern, was waived by the Chiefs late last week. He had visited with the Seahawks and Ravens, before working out for the Patriots today.

At 6-foot-1, 200 pounds, Price adds some more size and speed to a receiving corps that includes Randy Moss, Wes Welker, Jabar Gaffney, Sam Aiken, Kelley Washington and Ray Ventrone. Of the group, Washington missed Sunday’s loss to the Dolphins with an ankle injury.

Price also has some experience on special teams, as a gunner.

  1. I think quarterback may be a more pressing need for this team...

  1. Yeah, I tend to agree.

  1. This makes no sense to me. Why didn't they just work out another punter?
Mike, please make some sense of this. Aren't you a little baffled, as well?
I don't think another WR is suddenly going to bring this team together.

  1. Does this mean Kelly Washington to IR?

  1. maybe it means randy moss to IR to preserve him for next season

  1. I'm pretty sure Bill Belichick's main concern is satisfying the readers of Reiss's Pieces. You do deserve an explanation and if he doesn't give it then he should be fired.

  1. I hope someone makes some sense of this for me.

This is like adding another addition to a car that is ready to take off, yet we still are waiting for a decent driver to take it places.

  1. Sheesh...how many more gunners do they need? Slater, Wilhite, Washington, Ventrone, and Aiken can do it when he's not protecting...

  1. Maybe we are trading moss for a qb?

    I hope not though.

  1. The Patriots should have signed a QB. Bledsoe, Flutie, Moon, Beuerlein, Unitas, Eason, Zolak, Tupa, Elway, Montana, Tarkenton, Marino, Staubach, Fouts, O'Brien and others are all itching to come out of retirement and compete again. Only kidding, of course.
Look, there are no veteran QBs out there that could help the Patriots. Why bring in someone who won't do any better than Cassel and then be back in retirement in January? If the season is over because Brady is out, then it's best to let the young guys get some experience. If the season isn't over (because it's a team game and there are 52 other players), then it needs to be one of the young guys familier with the system (with lots of "fight" in them) at the helm. It'll either be Cassel or O'Connell, and Cassel has done ok so far.
Why a WR? Maybe they're hoping the addition of size and speed (of Price) will help the offense. More likely, it's a move to improve special teams.

  1. hey -

i know we are hung up on the QB play but in the immortal words of Rick Pitino "Tom Brady aint walking out of that lockeroom and on to the field".

The defense gave up a lot of points and I dont think any of us could expect Cassel or any other free agent QB to put up those numbers. Yes, we need better play from that position but the OL has to play much better and the defense has to be more dominant instead of milktoast.

Lets face it - we are not going to win any shootouts this year. We need to score 21 a game with Cassel (or whoever) which I think we can do and the defense needs to hold the opponent under 20. Also, it wouldnt hurt if the specials and the defense could add 6 every know and then. If we can do that we can win 9 or 10 but I dont think we can expect much better.

Buckle your chin straps boys - its going to be a long year.

  1. why all these no name players.i can see putting this guy on the practice squad.why not ty-law,or andre dyson?why not garcia,or aj-feely?why not shaun alexander for our non-running game?

  1. I don't think Cassel can score 21 points a game. Don't see it happening even against the some of the worse teams in football. Look how easy the schedule is. Think for one sec if we had last years schedule. This team will be lucky to average 18 points a game if Cassel plays that poorly. The pats d is not good enough to carry the O. Sorry folks.

  1. Just because QB is an issue that doesn't mean they should stop trying to improve the team in other areas. What's hard to understand about this? Whether they are winning or losing, BB and the crew are always working people out all year long and are constantly making roster moves...what is there to make sense about?

  1. Great pickup. A player who was cut by the worst team in the league . . . OK maybe the Rams are worse.

  1. it's fair to say that most of you have gone crazy either due to the economy or that we have been spoiled in boston the last 8 years like the ceos of banks.

  1. Mike any insight into this move? I don't get it!

  1. IT'S THE 53RD SPOT ON THE ROSTER!!

You're expecting the 53rd player on the roster to "bring the team together"? You think the corpse of "name player" Shaun Alexander running behind THIS line is what's need for the running game?

    I give up.

  1. special teams guys are important for field position, no doubt. gunners are very valuable. I was genuinely curious if this move had any correlation to Washington's injured ankle, along with the fact that NE does tend to place its injured players on IR pretty quick sometimes.

  1. These comments about the QB are ridiculous. The RB's for Miami averaged over 6yds per rush. If that's the case even with Brady the pats would 8-8 at best.

  1. What is so difficult about this? BB and Co. plan on the long term. The kid is young and fast and big, kinda like Chad Jackson. Don't you think it would be nice to have a tall fast receiver opposite Randy Moss? Can he contribute? Time will tell, if he does not, he will be gone a lot faster than Chad. Will he help out this year? Sure, but maybe not between the lines on game day unless it is on Special Teams. If he learns the system well and contributes at practice he just might see some playing time later in the year or next year. There must be something intriguing about this kid to the powers that be. This administration is not subject to knee jerk reactions unlike so many of the writers on this board. (ie: We need so and so at quarterback.)

  1. Maurice Price is the future. He's fast and always shows up. I think Kansas City made a bad choice but New England made a very smart one. He's going to make things happen for the Patriots.... MARK MY WORDS!! Give him a chance before you knock him!

  1. Yall need to stop talking about maurice price like that yall don't even know him his fast and well help out the patriots a lot
