Patriots tryouts & visits

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff September 8, 2008 08:00 PM

The Patriots had the following players in for tryouts at Gillette Stadium today:

  • WR Patrick Carter (Louisville)
  • WR Joel Filani (Texas Tech)
  • WR Chris Francies (Texas-El Paso)
  • P Tom Malone (Southern California)
  • OT Will Svitek (Stanford)
  • G Jeb Terry (North Carolina)
  • WR Chandler Williams (Florida International)

Furthermore, Patriots coach Bill Belichick was specific today when he said the Patriots did not work out any free-agent quarterbacks, or give them physicals. But the team did report to NFL headquarters that it visited with quarterbacks Chris Simms and Tim Rattay today.

    1. Now we will see just how good Josh McDaniels really is. Last season he benefited from one of the best corps of receivers ever put together in the NFL. He has virtually the same this season.

Last season they had Brady. This season they do not.

IMO, Charlie Weis made Brady into what he became. Tom Brady made Josh McDaniels into what some people believe he is. ( I do not)

Now we will see if McDaniels is the real thing or a faker.

I, for one, as a Pats fan hope he is the real thing, but I doubt it.

    1. who the heck are these guys!!!! what....did they host an open tryout for all the junior college guys as well???!!!

How about bringing in a back-up QB for tryouts?

    1. Looks like they're getting ready for a major trade with one of their major players. Ugh! They turned away the QBs that they invited and indicated the "situation had changed." I think things are about to get a lot bumpier.

    1. Is there a reason or disincentive making the Pats hesistant to work out or perform physicals on a player? Why bother to meet with them?

    1. Can Bob Kraft please call Drew Bledsoe now so we can get another ring this year. This team is built for a championship and may not get there with a young QB but Drew can do it and ride off into the sunset.

    1. Mike,
Adam Schefter at NFL.com is reporting that the Patriots had both Simms and Rattay at The Razor today and told them both to go home, they weren't needed. Schefter suspect there might be a big trade brewing. I'd love to hear your analysis about this one.

    1. Well, if nothing else, we will find out just how good, or bad, Josh McDaniels is.

    1. "IMO, Charlie Weis made Brady into what he became. Tom Brady made Josh McDaniels into what some people believe he is".

I agree with this statement 100%. If they had Charlie last year they win the SB. It's that simple.

    1. The Pats, like all teams, are always hosting players for tryouts. Its so they can get an idea of who's out there if they need someone at those positions, be it for the practice squad ro the 53 man roster. Those guys we're probably contacted last week about a tryout for monday. Next week, it will be the same thing.

    1. Which wide receiver would they trade away?

    1. Interesting, Bob McC. Shefter is usually ahead of the game and doesn't have a track record of "false positives." Does he have a blog or other outlet (don't have access to NFL channel right now).

    1. Now is the time for "ole Josh to stand up !! He now has an ordinary quarterback at the helm of an exceptionally talented team !! He just barely got away with his
play calling against the Cheifs that are comprised mostly of rookies !!! Starting
with the Jets the competition is going to be a lot stiffer !!! Not only is Cassell on display ........you're in the limelight this year too Josh

    1. I think it's just a matter of time for Chris Hanson. Theyve had four punters in for try-outs in teh last 3 weeks. Signed one to the practice squad. And Hanson put two into the end-zone (though he DID have one great kick in the first quarter). I think he'll be gone within 3 weeks unless he gets his act together...

    1. ML,

Schefter posted the comment about the NWE QB situation on his blog site, which is at NFL.com. Mike responded to my comment in his regular blog. In between annoying travel stories and kudos to Starbucks Peter King suggested in his MMQB blog that the Patriots told Simms and Rattay to go away because Bellichick got peeved that news leaked that he was even looking at them. What an idiot. BTW: Peter King believes that the Patriots cheated too, and BB should be locked up in Gitmo with bin Laden, so he's just a fountain of knowledge and useful comments. It escapes me sometimes why SI has that guy on staff honestly. I mean, how stupid is that? "Gosh, the word leaked that we were interested in you, so to prove Adam Schefter wrong, will let the entire 2008 season go down in flames. Bye, bye."

    1. perhaps they're not going out for another QB, because they are confident in Cassel. Also, Brady might be back sooner than reported. The ACL injury wasn't as serious as it could have been. He could be back in December.
