  1. In the last drive, did KC have an extra down?

Posted by DB September 7, 08 03:55 PM
  1. First play: Hobbs catches out of bounds.
Second play: Pass to Bowe, incomplete
Third play: draw to Johnson, no gain
Fourth play: Incomplete pass to Gonzalez
Fifth play: pass to the right corner, incomplete

  1. Was there a penalty that the announcers didn't tell us about? (Sorry to keep adding new submissions -- I keep forgetting to add these new thoughts).

  1. Thanks God!!!!!!! Gotta give some props to Matt Cassel. The guy is showing poise today. I know we've all been saying how bad he is, but credit's due. With 13/18, 152 yards and 1 TD, he is good today. Btw, What the Heck is the D thinking on that 68 yards hook up in the last 2 min? Let's hope Brady is back next week.

  1. MOST EXCELLENT............

  1. No, really, KC had 5 downs on their last play. How did no one notice? There were 2 missed passed by bowe (one sailed over his head, one bounced off his helmet), a tackled run play for no gain, a pass to Gonzales which was not caught and then a pass to the right corner of the endzone which also was not caught--5 downs.

  1. How about bringing back Doug Flutie if Brady is seriously injured ? Flutie is still in good shape, and knows the Patriots offense, and is good friends with Belichick. ?

  1. Matt Cassel is the future of this team. Brady did a good job for a few years, but now it's time to step up the plate and ride the Matt Cassel gravy train to MANY more Superbowls! The best offense in the league JUST GOT BETTER! Go Patriots!!!!!!!

  1. There were only four plays at the end of KC's drive. The first pass that was defended by Hobbs did not count as a down. NE had called timeout before the play but the players carried the play out to its completion.

Posted by SQF September 7, 08 04:13 PM
  1. The first play didn't count since the Patriots called a timeout.

Posted by Dawn September 7, 08 04:14 PM
  1. For everyone who noticed the 'extra' down by the Chiefs - the first 1st-down play was wiped out because the Pats had called timeout just before the snap. The announcers caught it, and if you noticed, the time was also reset from 48 sec back the the 53 sec at the start of the series. So officially, there were only 4 plays at the 5 yd.line.

  1. 1-0 . . . right where we'd thought we'd be. Go Pats! Please God, let it not be season ending. Don't like that we've heard nothing . . . an ominous sign.

  1. We saw it too. Had it on DVR and kept rewinding to see if we missed a penalty or something. What gives? Definately 5 downs on that last drive.

Posted by mweb September 7, 08 04:17 PM
  1. there was a timeout called by the patriots before that first throw to bowe

Posted by Rodrigues September 7, 08 04:17 PM
  1. That first play where hobbs caught it out of bound didn't count, a time out was called before the play

Posted by brent September 7, 08 04:18 PM
  1. I was wondering the same thing about KC getting a 5th down. What the . . . ?

Mike can you verify what happened there if you get a chance?

  1. Props to Cassel. I've never been a fan of his and though Gute to be a better QB but he did very well today. Much better than expected. Still it was against one of the worst teams in the league so let's see what happens next week.

  1. There was a timeout before the first play to bowe that hobbs caught they mentioned it on the air

Posted by Rodrigues September 7, 08 04:20 PM
  1. i was listening to the radio. the radio guys announced the patriots called two timesouts in the last 4 downs, and once the chiefs "threw an imcomplete" on a dead play. that must be what your referring to

  1. Come on Mike....where is the info on Brady????!!!!

Posted by Pat's fan Houston September 7, 08 04:21 PM
  1. On the last drive the first pass to Bowe was a non play - the Patriots had called a timeout before the play apparently. So, the next play was still 1st and goal

Posted by Archie Dickinson September 7, 08 04:21 PM
  1. The Pats called a time out just before the pass that Hobbs caught out of bounds. That play didn't count, so it was still 1st and goal from the 5 and the rest of the sequence proceeded as stated. The announcers did a poor job of making this clear to the viewer.

  1. There was a timeout called by the patriots on the Hobbs catch out of bounds in "5 play" drive.

Posted by nathan September 7, 08 04:23 PM
  1. The Pats called a time-out before the snap on the first play. For whatever reason, the refs didn't stop that play and waited until it was over to announce that the Pats had called a time-out.

  1. Pats called a TO right before fade route that Hobbs defended

Posted by Chris September 7, 08 04:24 PM
  1. KC didn't have an extra play. There was a TO called right before they "first" play but it was canceled out because of the TO.

Posted by Bill September 7, 08 04:24 PM
  1. There was a timeout called on before the 2nd play, but the play still went on --- they actually put four seconds back on the clock after the play --- the announcers said: "the last play didn't count, there was a timeot."

Posted by timeout September 7, 08 04:25 PM
  1. The first play did not count as KC called a time out before the ball was snapped. Therefore, the play was replayed.

Posted by SuperBowlDestiny September 7, 08 04:28 PM
  1. I was only four downs. The first play didn't count because the Pats had called time out before the snap.
Flutiefan would you get real!! Now way that is going to happen. Stop dreaming.

Posted by Hans September 7, 08 04:28 PM
  1. On the first play from scrimmage, the Pats had called a timeout. There was no play ... so the Chiefs only had four plays on that last drive ...

Posted by Pete September 7, 08 04:31 PM
  1. That extra down was a timeout before the incomplete to Bowe.

Posted by Scott September 7, 08 04:31 PM
  1. There was a time out prior to the Elis Hobbs play... the game clock went back to 53 seconds and it was a replay of 1st down. The Chiefs did not get 5 downs...

Posted by JJ September 7, 08 04:32 PM
  1. DB, Patriots called Timeout on first play

Posted by Pawan September 7, 08 04:32 PM
  1. Yeah, what's up with the five downs on that last drive???? How can that happen??

Posted by Los Angeles September 7, 08 04:32 PM
  1. I thought the same thing about the 5 downs, went back and watched the DVR and they did (briefly) say a timeout was called before the 1st play pass sailed out of bounds. CBS seemed confused and sorta glossed over it and had wrong downs listed, etc.

Posted by Joe September 7, 08 04:32 PM
  1. Or what about Grogan?

Posted by Ush September 7, 08 04:33 PM
  1. Flutie will be 55 and some nitwit from Natick will want him to come back! hey why not bring back Bledsoe?

Posted by Greg McDonough September 7, 08 04:33 PM
  1. Pats called a TO right before fade route that Hobbs defended

Posted by Chris September 7, 08 04:34 PM
  1. They had 5 plays because the Pats called a timeout before 2nd play - the incomplete pass to Bowe on the left side. So that play didn't count.

    Dierdorf explained it.

  1. The pats beat this team last year by 35. If Brady is out for the season the Pats do not make the playoffs. We will never get any real answers either because of Bill b

Posted by Ryan September 7, 08 04:35 PM
  1. 5 plays but New England called a time out just as the first play was snapped. They were charged a time out and it was a non-play.

Posted by Derek Paquette September 7, 08 04:36 PM
  1. On the last KC Series.. On the first play, the Pats called a time out before the snap, so though the play still ran to completion (or incompletion, as it were), it still didn't count. Then they took the time out, and it was still first and ten after the time out. So if they had scored on that first play, it would not have counted.

  1. Matt Cassel is a lot better than they let you see in pre-season. He was kept around even though he looked like he had no idea what he was doing.

The Patriots knew exactly what they were doing. Doug Flutie is not on the way. Neither is Drew Bledsoe or Duante Culpepper. If Brady is IR'd, then Matt Gutierrez would probably get another look or perhaps a guy like Chris Simms. Vinny Testaderde can also provide a stop-gap in this system and if he made a 4th QB appearance this year, I don't think it would surprise anyone. Cassel is the QB now and it's going to be interesting to watch it evolve. I think it will be allright though. The system is very strong.

  1. Brady was the best at sliding in the pocket and avoiding these type of injuries.

Maybe if Brady spent more time in camp and less as a budding real estate mogul slash fashion model, he'd have remembered how to do the slide move.

Obviously he cared little for football this summer.

    He should forfeit his salary.

  1. K. C. did not have 5 downs on the last drive. K. C. called a timeout just before the ball was snapped and thus the play did not count. If it was a TD it would not have counted.

HOWEVER, for all practical purposes Patriots D held K.C on 5 tries from the 5 yard line. Overall great defensive performance except for Sanders foolishly getting sucked in on the long pass play that set up the goal line stand. What in the world were you thinking Sanders coming up that aggressively under the circumstances of the game at the time -- no situational awareness whatsoever.

Uh, okay. It's been almost an hour. Any updates?

  1. If Brady has an MCL injury - out for 6 weeks (most probable)
If Brady has an ACL injury - out for the year (25% chance by looking at the hit)

Either way, Cassel is NOT the man. The only issue is the complicated system but there is ONE guy out that that has a nice relationship with one of our receivers. Want to guess?

I lay odds that they called Daunte Culpepper by halftime and he will be on the practice field Tuesday. You heard it here first

  1. All the "pundits" will write that the Patriots season is over... Can't win without Brady... Who's this Cassel character?...

I don't recall being too confident when Bledsoe went down. Pundits wrote...Patriots season over... Can't win without Bledsoe... Who's this Brady character?

Don't forget Brady wasn't Brady when he was first thrown into the season.

Not saying Cassel can easily replace Brady (not even close)...but there are a few other players out there too. They are a good team...well coached.

Posted by Madison September 7, 08 05:04 PM
  1. I'm not sure Cassel is not the man, at least for the short term. Yeah, KC went 4-12 last year, but the Patriots played the kind of game they used to in the Super Bowl years. Nothing flashy and strong team defense. BB and Daniels managed Cassel all game long -- like BB did with Brady when he first took over from Bledsoe. For the most part, high probability short passes with a few key passes by Cassel. When Cassel needed to get it done, he did. Nice effort.

    Posted by R.C. September 7, 08 05:06 PM
  1. No Brady, no chance. And don't compare it to Bledsoe...he didn't have a championship pedigree when he went down.

Posted by Classless Concepts September 7, 08 05:23 PM
  1. yes cassel played fairly well.just enough to beat the cheifs with no superstars, but when the better teams start comeing around we could be in trouble if brady is done for the year.wish they would quit makeing this a secret.someone knows something by now.

  1. the only way a flag would be thrown on any play for a dirty hit, if it was a Manning anyone touches one of them flags all over the field please, have faith in the great mind of coach B.B Cassel is smart and he can throw otherwise B.B would not have him still ......
