Pats hosting CB Deltha O'Neal

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff September 1, 2008 08:55 AM

The Patriots are hosting free-agent cornerback Deltha O'Neal on a visit today at Gillette Stadium.

The visit was first reported by SIRIUS NFL Radio. The report has been confirmed by a source close to O'Neal.

The 31-year-old O'Neal would bolster a cornerback spot that currently included fourth-year veteran Ellis Hobbs, rookies Terrence Wheatley and Jonathan Wilhite, and nine-year veteran Lewis Sanders. The group was thinned on Saturday when the Patriots surprising cut veteran Fernando Bryant, who had been running with the first string throughout training camp.

O'Neal has played for the Broncos (2000-2003) and Bengals (2004-2007).

  1. The name makes this guy intriguing, meaning, I actually know the guys name. However, he could not make it on the Bengals?! Do we know the circumstances of his departure?

  1. Relax. In Bill we trust.

I'm tired of watching a spent defense in the fourth quarter. Play the rookies with energy.

  1. My enduring image of O'Neal is him getting burned on the touchdown against the Broncos Monday Night (the intentional safety game).

  1. I'm with you JG; David Givens faked him out of his proverbial jock strap. He left the Broncos in their dog house. Pay Ty Law, not this loser.

  1. Well, JG how many of those "enduring images" do you have of Hobbs? O'Neal is certainly an upgrade over the guys we have. I think Wheatley could be a great player in a year or two, but he's not ready to start at left corner in the NFL...and if they don't pick up someone else, who plays the nickel? Another rookie, or Lewis Sanders? We don't have any depth, and if one CB gets hurt, we'd be in serious trouble.

  1. Lets also remember that Ellis Hobbs was pretty bad last year and is a borderline starter in his own right.
