Pats roster moves

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff September 15, 2008 03:35 PM

The Patriots announced a few roster moves today:

  • The team has re-signed RB Kyle Eckel to the 53-man roster.

  • TE Stephen Spach has been released from the 53-man roster.

  • S Mark Dillard has been re-signed to the practice squad.

  • P Tom Malone has been released from the practice squad.

Spach's release could be tied to TE Benjamin Watson's return to health. Watson has missed the first two games with a right knee injury.

Eckel adds a sixth running back to the roster. RB Laurence Maroney injured his shoulder in Sunday's win and missed two-plus quarters, although he did return for one carry in the fourth quarter.

    1. I think the Eckel move could be more special teams related than anything else now that Watson is healthy. If Maroney is seriously hurt, which I don't believe, they already have enough backs on the roster in Morris, Jordan and Faulk to more than fill in for him.

    1. They should try to swindle another team and try to trade Laurence Maroney for a 3rd round draft pick.

      "Laurence Maroney, can dance!"

    1. Eckel is likely a replacement for Alexander on special teams, calf injuries tend to linger.

    1. For Eric J: If they will stop trying to run Maroney inside, he can be a productive back. And, a few screens or flat passes to him, also, would be a plus.

If Watson is back, that will help Cassel quite a bit, in two ways, blocking and receiving.

    1. Pierre Woods was injured during week 2. Eckel figures to replace him on special teams.

    1. Nik,
Good point on Eckel being a replacement for Alexander who has a calf injury, I just saw that QB/WR Seneca Wallace from the Seahawks and DE Brett Kiesel from the Steelers are out 1 and 2 months respectivelly with calf injuries.

    1. Glad Eckel is back. I like that kid, not only as a power back, but I think he has excellent special teams potential.

    1. Ty Law will not be back with the Pats, he wants too much money. If he was coming back, the Pats would have signed him instead of Deltha Oneal.

John lynch is another story. I must say, I am surprised he has not been re-signed. Especially with his comments when he was cut, but mostly the fact that he has not signed with another team. The Jets were after him badly, but he is still out there. I say, re-sign him now before it's too late. He might be a little slower now, but he worked his butt off in the preseason and can only be a great help to this team throughout the season!!!

    1. Sorry for the double post.
I'm curious to see what everyone else thinks about John Lynch. I was told by a friend, he was too slow, that's why he was cut. Since when did that become the only reason for being cut?? He has "IT", heart, passion, smarts, whatever you want to call it. I for one, hope to see him lined up next to Harrison soon. They may be slow, but would you want to come across the middle for a catch?? I think not.
