Pollard on the Brady hit

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff September 7, 2008 05:02 PM

Colleague Christopher L. Gasper was present when Chiefs safety Bernard Pollard answered questions about the hit that knocked Tom Brady out of the game.

“The play was not intentional," Pollard said. "People can call me a dirty player, you can call me whatever you want to call me, it’s not a dirty play. When you have 230 pounds on your back, and you’re trying to go forward, things will happen. I saw the ball was still in his hands and I tried to get to him. I tried to get up and get to him. But I couldn’t get up, so I just tried to grab him. It was not an intentional play.”

Pollard expressed remorse at the result of the play. He also detailed what he heard on the field after the hit.

“All I heard was him scream and yell. When I heard him scream and yell, I knew something was wrong," he said. "That [stinks], because he’s a great player. He really is. He’s a top-notch guy. I’ve never really personally talked to him, but from seeing his interviews and everything else. … I’m sorry and that’s immediately what I said afterward. I went to my coach and let him know – ‘Coach, this was not intentional.’ Coach said ‘I know, I saw.’ My coach knows me and my teammates know me. I’ve never been a player like that, never been tagged as a player like that ever. It’s unfortunate.”

  1. I did not think it was dirty, just like I did not think Wilfork's hit on Losman last year was not dirty.

  1. As upset as I am I don't think we can fault Pollard. The O lines been suspect since late last season and it was just a matter of time till this happened.

  1. This is the kind of thing that happens in the game. The defender was getting blocked and trying his damnedest to get to the QB. It didn't appear dirty at all. Those defenders don't have time to think about the consequences of their actions - they are focused on getting to the ball/quarterback. It was just a fluke.

  1. If Wilfork was fined last year, then Pollard needs to be fined for the low blow to Brady's knee. Will Roger Goodell, former Jets employee, make the right call?

The entire rules concerning low hits on QB's needs to be re-inforced or strengthened, the same way horsecollar tackles were banned.

The NFL can't afford to keep losing stars like Carson Palmer or Brady.

  1. If Wilfork's play was dirty, then this play was dirty plus. They should fine him more than Wilfork was fined and he should be suspended. Otherwise its open season on QB's and I would hope we do the same.

  1. It will be interesting to see what becomes of Moss' comments now that this has come out.

  1. Even though I don't think it was truly intentional, I've always believed a cardinal rule in football is that you DO NOT go for an opponent's knee...

Using other sports analogies, it's like a hockey player cross-checking hitting another player from behind and into the boards - and we all know what happened to Patrice Bergeron last year.

    Intentional? Not necessarily...
    Dirty? No
    Dangerous? VERY

  1. HAHAHA...those trying to compare Pollards' hit to Wilfork's make me laugh....wilfork had a flying elbow to losman's knee and pollard dragged someone into brady. i hope the nfl gives him an award!!!

  1. Don't worry. This is all part of the plan. Brady can get back to his real estate hollywood life.

Wake up people. Brady does not care about football anymore.

  1. 1 more thing, as much as I cant stand Herm Edwards - I do not think he would ever have someone hurt somebody out there, it just isnt his MO.

He is a lousy HC - but he is not evil. Unlike sports fans from NY - who are infact evil as well as braindead. Did I mention they all have mustard stains on their Yankees shirts

  1. I agree with JJ - don't think it was dirty just like Wilfork's. It's just the breaks of playing a violent sport. He obviously wasn't going for the knee but was trying to make a play and put pressure on Brady - it's his job.

Time to get over it right now.

  1. The blocker was holding Pollard down, and the only way he could get to Brady was by tackling him at the legs. If the NFL penalizes this they might as well put a red jersey on the quarterback and make it a two-hand touch league, or (if you're really serious) make it illegal to tackle below the waist. It's unfortunate that Brady was hurt on the play, but that's football. I watched a replay of Wilfork's hit on Losman, and I don't think that was an illegal hit, either....

  1. The season is 100% over now if Brady is done which I believe he is.It just sucks the rest of the team stinks and they will go 6 -10 now. Looks like the beginning of the end for the Patriots at least they can now get another top ten draft pick to get some O-line help.

  1. It was not a dirty hit. The line was not doing well during that series and Pollard got to Brady also about two plays before the play that hurt him. Kaczur watched him walk right in.

Posted by Billy Jack September 7, 08 07:21 PM
  1. Try as we all might to rationalize or delude ourselves about TB's injury, watching that knee buckle as it did, there's little question it's an ACL, and quite likely MCL involvement, major damage. Better study that waive wire til you're bleary-eyed, BB, and we'd better get behind Cassel or bust, 'cause he's the horse we're riding for at least 8 weeks if not the season.

    Posted by Coach C September 7, 08 07:22 PM
  1. Chief's fan, there was no "tackling" at the legs done by Pollard. He grabbed at Brady's foot/ankle but the injury was caused by HELMET TO KNEE contact which the moron's covering the game refused to state. Only Pollard knows if there was intent to injure because I think it was more reaction than intentional. BTW, the only holding going on was the Chiefs O line when Croyle went back to pass.

Posted by Peter September 7, 08 07:47 PM
  1. Have some faith.. We STILL have the best coach, the best WR(s), the best Defensive front in football. Brady's injury is a blow, but if there is anything the past few years has taught us about being New England sports team fans (i.e Red Sox down 0-3 vs. Spankmees, and Brady's meteoric rise, you should KNOW that we will rally around this.

Brady will come back, with a VENGENCE. Hopefully, this year, but if not, go get 'em Cassel. All you have to do is use the weapons around you.

  1. Pollard may not have done it intentionally (though I think the NFL should review it carefully), but I also did not see him check on Tom or express the slightest concern. This adds to his potential guilt.

  1. I'm a Cowboys fan. This is the worst fear for any team with potential Super Bowl hopes. I hope it isn't as bad as it seems, but I just heard on the post game show here in Dallas that Brady is out for the year with a torn ACL.

Posted by Brad September 7, 08 08:01 PM
  1. If it wasn't intentional then why didn't he grab him around the legs instead of putting his shoulder to Brady's knee?

Posted by Steve September 7, 08 08:07 PM
  1. Same cheap shot Carson Palmer took. Teams with no hope have no choice but to play dirty. All we can hope is Bernard Pollard ends with helmet to the knee in the future. What a scumbag.

Posted by John September 7, 08 08:09 PM
  1. First off anyone who thinks immediately its a torn ACL its not that easy. I agree it looks bad but to hear people already diagnosing his injury is absurd. He hasn't even gone for an MRI and depending on swelling those aren't even all that accurate right away. Lets wait for the real experts to tell us what it is not these idiots on post game shows!!!

  1. One of the dirtiest plays in sports history, right up there with the Kermit Washington punch on Rudy Tomjanovich.

  1. I tend to agree with the JJ, the very first commentator...in that this hit was similar to the Wilfolk hit on Losman. But...didn't the Polian led Rules Committee pass a rule about not hitting QBs intentionally low? This was definately an intentional low hit...though I don't think that Pollard intended to injure Brady. A flag should have been thrown.

Could you imagine the anal media exam Pollard would be going through right now if he had low-balled Farve or, God help us, Peyton Manning?

Posted by TexasPat September 7, 08 09:12 PM
  1. lol john, i guess the pats players are the exception to that rule huh.

Take Sammy Morris off his back and theres no injury.

  1. I can't believe that it's confirmed that he's out for the year, not yet anyway. He has an MRI tomorrow, they can't know until they get the results back from that. Maybe they had a doctor check him out or something and make a guess but other than that I can't see how these reports are true.

As for the hit, it definitely wasn't dirty.

  1. Pollard is not a dirty player. I went to Purdue at the same time he was a player. I've seen dirty players and Pollard is not one. This boils down to just bad luck.

  1. NY Giants won a Super Bowl doing the same act as Bernard Pollard did on Brady today. Either NFL is going to act properly to stop such events from happening or loose its popularity in upcoming years similar to the Ice Hockey. Super Stars bring more revenues to NFL than short sided results.

This was a correction, plain and simple. The bar that I was at was cheering when this injury happened. Not saying that's cool, but please get it straight that the rest of the country HATES the Patriots and their fans. And not out of jealousy, but because of ... well because of most of the inane, partisan comments you can read above.

    This was karma. Accept it.

  1. It may not be an intentional hit to injury Brady, but no matter the circumstances you should never dive at a players knees, especially at a QB's leg when it is planted and fully extended while throwing a pass! After seeing the pay several times now..it sure did not look like a fluke play where the defender was forced into Brady's knee. Pollard was knocked to the ground and when he saw Brady attempting to throw a pass he dove into his legs. I leave up to the NFL to determine if it deserves a Fine.

  1. I don't know if it was intentional, but ANY player with some sense know that was a dangerous play and should be reviewed by the league. Sammy Morris was NOT on his back by the time he made a dive AT Tom Brady's leg. Even worse, Pollard wrapped his arm around the BOTTOM half of his leg, which, anyone with common sense knows that is how to end someone's career, since a player can't really release his leg to prevent further injury. Pollard knew he wasn't going to get to Brady in time for a sack. He could have leg go far earlier than he did. I say it deserves a fine.

  1. An injury like this is ironic for the Pats and Bellicheat. After years of lying and playing with the injury report, and with Bellicheat going so far as to drop sarcasm at the reporters looking for information on this injury, perhaps this is karma.

    +1 Pollard

  1. Last ACL tear I saw, the player couldn't walk on the leg at all. Brady walked with some help and was putting a lot of weight on the leg. I'll wait an see. He basically walked off. He may be ok.

  1. Funny that after Brady gets the dirty hit on him the Patriots then knock Brodie Croyle out of the game.. Hmm... I wonder... (But, that's great if the Pats did that b/c the Chiefs asked for it. Hopefully, if the injury to Croyle takes him out some games that this season will go down the tubes even more for the Chiefs & GM/Pres./whatever else stupid title Carl Peterson has that he will be ax'ed b/c he hasn't produced a playoff win in 17 yrs!!! That puts in him in the Marty Schottenheimer category for coaches/GM's & also the Matt Millen category of futility.

The NFL should suspend Bernard Pollard 1-3 games b/c I thought I heard that inside the pocket that players weren't supposed to attack QB's knees & clearly Pollard wasn't going for the sack or the stripped fumble...oh wait let me put my shoulder in to it & cave Brady's knee & that's exactly what he did. Chiefs trash!! IF they can't develop their own QB why not destroy another team's franchise QB. Obviously if Tom Brady was one of the "Prima-Donna's" like the Manning Brothers something would be done by the Upper Brass, but OOPS it's the Pats & did I mention that the "Bretts I mean Jets" were Roger Goddell's fav. team growing up. I guess Goddell & Mangini are working in "cahoots together!!" Anything is possible??

Last yr. the Patriots knocked out JP Losman for the Bills & then the maturation of Trent Edwards began & the sad thing about that is @ the time the Bills players & fans were probably pissed, but look @ the Bills since Losman went out & Trent Edwards has stepped up.... Can you say that the Bills should send the Patriots a gift for helping them rid themselves of the idea of Losman to tutor Edwards.

It sucks that Pollard had to pull a Kimo Von Oehleffen DE Steelers play out like what he did agnst the Bengals (to ruin the Bengals chances b/c CIN was going to win that game b/c they were going to throw right over the Steelers safeties like everyone else always seems to do they had the OL & not nearly the # of arrests to their team then.) I guess it was the downfall of the Bengals that Palmer went out w/that knee inj. b/c they missed their window & I just hope the Patriots window isn't closing. How many more yrs does Rodney Harrison have?? Also does this mean that Junior Seau, now won't come back b/c we don't have as great a chance @ a SB??

Sign Chris Simms or Tim Rattay (Rattay was a player the Patriots had their eye on the yr T. Brady was drafted they were b/w Tim Rattay & T.Brady & of course they made the right decision.

  1. I absolutley agree with Bill-This was KARMA! Trevor, all you see are Flying Elvises- you are biased. I can't believe some of you Pats Fans believe this was a cheap hit, and then say Wilforks hit last year wasn't. Vince "The Cheapshot Artist" (anyone remember him poking Brandon Jacobs in the eye) threw an elbow into Losmans knee. All Pollard did- he was dragged down, by Morris and Pollard hit Brady's leg.
It should of been holding on Morris 1st of all- there was no intent to injure
Again, this was Karma- the Dirtiest Team in the League finally feels what iKarma is all about

  1. Chris Simms isn't the answer.
How long will it take him to learn the playbook?
Matt Gutierrez would more suitable for a return.
Bringing in someone like Drew Bledsoe
makes more sense than bringing in Culpepper
or Vinnie, let's be real. a veteran to come in,
but not to start, but to help in development
of Matt Cassel or Kevin O'Connell. In the well traveled
road of Drew I see two pro bowl quarterbacks
    that have benefited.

  1. Dear Trevor Wilson,

After reading your post, I felt compelled to point out the amplitude of hypocritical opinions, flawed writing, and general lack of intelligent thought that it contained. However, as I began, I quickly became dizzy and proceeded to blackout. As I come to now, I can plainly see that I am not up for that task. If you could, in the future, practice the art of proofreading (and maybe watch some programs on PBS or at least the Discovery Channel) before your next contribution to a public message board, I believe you may have the potential to produce something that could be at least loosely interpreted as the English language. I wish you luck, my friend.

Every one of you deutsche banks needs to wake up and realize no one wants to injure a guy on the field. Pollard has NO HISTORY of dirty play which is something your team CANNOT SAY. Boo hoo you frickin babies. Suck it up and move on.

You know the hardest part about being a Patriot fan is? Telling your parents your gay.

  1. This was a DIRTY PLAY... look at how he dove at his knee... He can say that he did not mean it all he wants... This was a Glorified Cheap Shot from a nobody on the cheifs. You should not be able to tackle the QB at knees in the pocket, it ruins the game. If you can't touch the QB's head while trying to tackle him, why in the hell should you be able to dive at the side of his knee while he's trowing. NFL get it right.... Good Luck

  1. I am a huge Colts fan who used to live in Boston area for few years. My Ponies won the Superbowl as soon as I left the area and migrated south. I hate the Pats with passion. You know, I thought I would gloat if someone from the Brady bunch went down but I actually felt bad for the pretty boy. I guess I enjoyed our rivalry over the years and this year will not be the same. Now, if someone can take care of the Chargers (our newest hump), then you might as well book another SuperBowl title... One thing is for certain, NE bookies will make a killing this year on the Pats win total =)

He got knocked down, but he kept going.
Brady still had the ball when they first made contact.

It's too bad the line couldn't have done a better job.
