Porter: Cassel 'not a Tom Brady'

Posted by Chris Forsberg, Boston.com Staff September 17, 2008 06:19 PM

Miami Dolphins linebacker Joey Porter delivered some choice words for Patriots quarterback Matt Cassel today, and he suggested a Dolphins victory Sunday to boot.

From ESPN.com's Tim Graham:

DAVIE, Fla. -- Grab a thumbtack, Patriots Nation.

Miami Dolphins OLB Joey Porter has some bulletin-board material for you.

Porter, who has a stellar track record for throwing verbal salvos at the opposition, took some jabs Wednesday at New England Patriots QB Matt Cassel.

"I just know he's not a Tom Brady," Porter said. "So if it's not Tom Brady, it shouldn't be that hard."

The Patriots have won 21 straight regular-season games. The Dolphins have lost 20 of their past 21 games. The Patriots destroyed the Dolphins last year by a combined score of 77-35.

Yet Porter said "It'll be good to go out there and get our first victory."

Porter announced the Dolphins defense is going to come after Cassel.

"You treat him like you treat a backup," Porter said. "How do you prepare for a backup? He don't get that many snaps, right? So you throw the kitchen sink at him. That's what we're going to do."

Cassel became the Patriots' starting quarterback in Week 1, when Tom Brady suffered a season-ending knee injury. Cassel came off the sideline and beat the Kansas City Chiefs. He started last Sunday's victory over the New York Jets. The last time Cassel had started at QB was as a high school senior in 1999.

"He's a guy we'll prepare for, but that was his first start since high school," Porter said. "So you can take all the reps you want to. This is a totally different game, a totally different league. He's only had one start in the NFL. Take that for what it's worth. He won it, but if you compare him to Brady, there's no comparison.

"You can say whatever you want to put with it. Those are just the facts. That's what it is. It means what it means."

  1. Sounds like someone is bitter after all those poor performances in the playoffs w/ the Steelers.

  1. This is why I am proud to be a Patriots fan. Can you imagine ANY Patriots player saying something as flat-out stupid as Joey Porter's comments? Especially when he knows he'll be eating his words on Sunday...

  1. Bring it Joey.

Last I checked Matt Cassel is 2-0 this year, Chad Pennington is 0-2.

And your team lost to the Jets whom the Patriots completely dominated at home last week.

    Idiot.

  1. Amusing that Porter should talk such smack considering how the season has gone. After all, last I checked Miami LOST to the Jets (at Miami) in week 1... the very same Jets Cassel BEAT (in NY) in his first start since high school. Standard logic says that Cassel should be able to handle the Dolphins with relative ease... only question is, how big is the spread gonna be for the Pats...

  1. Gee, Joey Porter said all that? I'm surprised because it really didn't sound like something he would say, especially since the Dolphins aren't exactly tearing up the league, and Porter is usually such a, .......ahem........ humble guy. I guess we'll see on Sunday.

'Til then, stay classy Joey, stay classy.

  1. Sounds like he misses playing for a real football team... no wonder the Steelers got rid of this jerk. I hope the Tuna send him packing to the CFL.

  1. Porter has been a nobody for the past five years. Easily one of the most overrated, overhyped players EVER!! This is what happens when bitter players on bad teams run their mouths. THEY NEVER LEARN!!!!

Posted by Greg September 17, 08 07:26 PM
  1. Funny to hear Porter saying someone is "No Tom Brady" when for years he showed little respect for Brady.

Nice to see a couple years with a horrible team haven't changed this jerk.

Posted by Zitface September 17, 08 07:35 PM
  1. Whoops! Not the smartest of things to say. Porter is a has-been, but one should never guarantee victory for hell hath no fury like the Patriots provoked!

Posted by GoBam! September 17, 08 07:43 PM
  1. It's clear that he's a little off, but even the one objective part of his comments didn't make sense. He said that Cassel doesn't likely get a lot of snaps in practice. Did he somehow miss the fact that the Patriots have been resting Tom Brady's shoulder for years.

You think Belichick hasn't thrown the kitchen sink at Cassel over the last few years? This is the coach that invented the kitchen sink of defense.

See ya Sunday, Joey. See ya Sunday.

Posted by Gary September 17, 08 09:25 PM
  1. Never underestimate someone being coached by BB. Yeah he can talk all the crap "He is no Tom Brady".. Even Cassel admit that "He doesn't want to be Tom Brady, He just want to be Matt Cassel"..Given all the comments i think it should not matter as long as they back up their words and get to the QB[ I even doubt if he can sack Matt Cassel with our OL]

Hmm.. The last time i remembered someone talk trashed about winning a game with the Pats is that Steeler CB[i forgot the name]that was burned by Tom 3x,one on a amazing flea flicker to Jabar and 2 deep TD's to Randy.. I think something like that will happen specially with that FINS secondary..

Go Pats..The Pats with smoke the FINS this Sunday..

  1. last time i checked his team got their butts handed to them by the immortal cardinals last week

  1. First off, Priority it's OK to hate another team, but don't post commentary that just screams bitterness. If you want to go down the road of retribution, should we talk about the WORST call in NFL playoff history?? And I'll help you out in guessing which one I'm talking about, it's NOT the tuck rule (did i hear 1976??). So anyway, on to Porter. He's the best at one thing in the NFL, being a total idiot. Yes, he has physical skills (which are dwindling by the way) and I'm not even going to bash him as a player but it's very hard to respect a guy who shoots out comments like these. It was just during the offseason that he was going to town on the filming issue (joey, sorry but EVERY team does this in some sort of fashion as some coaches have even admitted to). To me, yes, trash talking is part of the NFL but he seems to me the only one who's better at THAT than proving it on the field. That said, I look forward to a great game Sunday and hopefully, as a Pats fan, watch Cassell make Mr. "Big Mouth" Porter eat his words.

Last request Joey Porter, can we please get as many quotes from you if you lose on how EMBARRASSING it is to eat your words???

  1. It was Anthony Smith.

I believe he lives under a bridge by some river these days.

  1. Who is Joey Porter?

Posted by Karim Garcia September 17, 08 10:39 PM
  1. Who is Joey Porter anyhow? Isn't he that overrated loud mouth who used to play for the Steelers? Oh, yeah...thanks Porter just what BB and the boys needed, just in case they thought they were playing a HS team instead of an NFL team this week. You got the Pats back on task. Give me Cassel over...who is Miami's QB anyhow? Oh, that's right that dude who was cut from the NY Jets, what's his name? I am sure the Tuna is just thrilled with Porter right about now. BTW Porter runs like he's carrying the kitchen sink. GO PATS!!!!

Posted by JB, Boise, Idaho September 17, 08 10:52 PM
  1. Don't you have to have a kitchen sink to throw one?

Posted by Brilo September 17, 08 10:59 PM
  1. Yea, Our Backup QB Matt Cassel is so bad that he won 2 games out of 2 so far. On the other hand, the glamorous 3 times All-Pro and 3 times Pro Bowler Joey Porter started one FULL season and 2 games, and yet has only 1 win. Talk about bitterness. Well, I guess I would talk like that too if I know I don't have a chance to win on the field.

  1. The Patriots have more wins in 2008 than the Dolphins have in 2007 and 2008 combined.

I'm sorry - did Joey Porter have something to say?

  1. Who is backing up Cassel? That's the question Patriot fans have to ask themselves. Cassel got beat up by an AWFUL team and my guess is he doesn't make it through the season healthy. Some of you like to compare common opponents. Oakland SPANKED Kansas City 23-8 and the Patriots barely beat the worst team in the league(Kansas City)17-10. The Patriots barely beat the Jets, another team with just four wins last year. The big boys are lighting it up around the league, and their doing it against better competition. While the Patriots are getting all they can handle from SCRUBS!! In my opinion the Eagles looked better in their loss this week against the Cowboys than the Patriots did in either of their PATHETIC wins against teams that bad teams beat.

Posted by LouieTheLip September 17, 08 11:42 PM
  1. Porter was probably as upset as anyone over the league's handling of Spygate. He's probably still upset about that. He wanted the Patriots SB rings taken back just like they were for that Olympic women sprinter (forget her name) who won the gold medal, but cheated with steroids. They took her medal back. Porter was saying there were racial implications because the black cheater lost the prize she cheated to get and the white cheater got to keep his prize.

This is was Joey Porter does.....talks trash. Obviously, he knows it will be posted on bullentin boards. Perhaps, he wants Cassell to spend 10 minutes this week answering media questions about Porter and have that in the inexperienced QBs head. Brady's not suseptible to mind games, but perhaps Cassel is.

What does Porter really have to lose by making this statement? Nothing. The 1-15 Dolphins are expected to get blown out by the 18-1 Patriots. It's not like if Porter kept his mouth shut the Dolphins were going to win.

Posted by Mike September 18, 08 01:59 AM
  1. Don't worry Joey, the Dolphins are a high school football team, heck Everet & Gloucester could POUND the ball through the fins swiss cheese defense. Joey Porter is the Manny Ramirez of Football, he never knows when too shut his trap, this is why with all that talent nobody would show him the money when he was a free agent, except a perenial loser like the Dolphins. He just added the main ingredient to the entree for the Patriots meal Sunday, and this meal isn't Dolphin Safe.

  1. Joey Porter....didn't he used to play in the NFL?

Posted by Baffled September 18, 08 04:10 AM
  1. I would like to thank Joey Porter, because he obviously doesn't remember what happened last time, when his former team's Anthony Smith guaranteed a win... not only did the Pats kill the Steelers, they made it an apparent OBJECTIVE to destroy Anthony Smith himself... I for one am excited to see Cassel destroy Porter with the screen pass. Put that in your pipe and smoke it, just like Ricky Williams does.

  1. as usual Patriot's fans whine about Joey Porter being honest in how he feels-it will be refreshing to watch the Dolphins show NE they are no longer the same team they were last yr and that the 'Phins with alot of heart and effort clearly have a chance to humble the 'Pats Sunday.I will enjoy reading the Boston scribes on Monday commenting on Joey's comments when they have to eat their words

  1. LouieTheLip, You are worse then Porter. SHUT the hell up. If you want to know who is backing up Cassel, the answer is Kevin O'Connel. You expect the Pats to blow out every team like they did last year? Let me guess, you have never played and only know football from watching it on TV? What did Brady do in his first start? The same damn thing Cassel did b/c BB knows how to break someone in. Give Cassel some time and not to mention, I like O'Connel better then Cassel but Cassel deserves the first shot. FYI....the Pats dominated the Jets (on the road) and the game against the Chiefs was a weird one b/c of the fact that we lost the NFL MVP in the first quarter which was a SHOCK to everyone. How does it feel to make minimum wage? I know you are not making real money with your
    intelligence!

Well beating a bad Houston team when they keep almost scoring for you and beating Cleveland has been an impressive feat since the other Houston team had a guy named moon on it and the Cleveland had Mack and Byner.

For a team with a veru bad offensive line last year and no Alan Faneca this year, and who already let their quarterback get a sprained shoulder you'd better look at who you're back up QB is, because even it will take a lot less than a cheap shot by KC to put Big Ben on his big butt for the year.

AND IF THE DOLPHINS THINK THEY ARE GONNA WIN IN GILLETTE STADIUM THEY ARE SORELY MISTAKEN. SOMEBODY PUT A SOCK IN JOEY PORTER'S MOUTH. Maybe our OL pancakes him about 10-20 times..

Maybe Matt Cassel might run a 99 yrd TD in Joey's face[he tackle's Matt and fall's down face first]

or Maybe this is the worst one, Matt Light scores on a running TD[about 40 yrds] while dragging joey with him and they dance with that play..

    how's that for a beating..haha..

Then again, we PATs Fans should be proud he remembers Matt Cassel's name because that might be the last name he will remember for making a clownish act on him..

And hey, Matt Cassel is no Dan Quayle either!

When will these bozos learn to not challenge the Pats during the week leading up to a game. They need to try the love-fest of compliments that Peyton tried last year. Well, that didn't work either.
