Ryan: For one day, it's not bad

Posted by Chris Forsberg, Boston.com Staff September 7, 2008 08:18 PM

The Globe's Bob Ryan says that, while we don't know for certain the status of Tom Brady, for one day the Patriots pulled together behind Matt Cassel and emerged with a victory.

  1. Just heard ESPN Radio reporting that one of their staff spoke with someone on the Pats who stated that "Matt Cassell will be the QB for the rest of the season."

Hope this is just another example of ESPN getting it wrong, but can anyone at the Globe confirm or deny?

  1. Can the Globe get confirmation from a named source that Brady is done for the season or not?

  1. Peter King on Sunday Night Football said the same thing. Season ending or close to. Well see. What a shame if its true.

  1. ESPN just reported that Brady is done for the year and that the Patriots will stick with Matt at QB. It seems like Trent Dilfer contacted the team and the Patriots stated that Brady was done. Roh roh ..

  1. Remember Wilfork on Losman? What comes around goes around, baby. Bad karma for the Pats. See you in September '09, Brady.

  1. If it's true that Brady is out with a torn ACL:

    There goes the season (sigh).

At least Cassel will (for better or worse) get some experience.

With the "easy" schedule, they should still be able to go 8-8, perhaps even making a wild-card playoff spot if they can pull off a couple additional wins.

To give myself some hope, I'm reminding myself of the 2001 season. Even so, I'm disappointed with the injury.

Best of luck, Tom, with your recovery.

  1. espn is the equivalent of a supermarket tabloid, so is michael silver for yahoo... come on mike, give us an update.

  1. Michael Silver, Yahoo Sports:

"New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady is expected to miss the rest of the 2008 season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, according to a source familiar with the injury.

While New England coach Bill Belichick said in his postgame press conference that he had no update on the status of Brady’s injury, two sources indicated it involved serious damage to the knee.

'It’s bad,' a team source said. 'We’re going to have to play without him.'”

ESPN just reported that Trent Dilfer spoke to someone (again, unnamed) with the Pats who said it looks like Cassell the rest of the way.

I'm sure there will be MRIs tomorrow, and we'll get something from a named source. Brady's a tough cookie. I wouldn't write him off coming back sometime during the season -- until I see something much more definite than has been reported.

  1. I for one am glad the Globe isn't jumping on the "brady is done for the season" story that is simply a rumor from "unnamed sources" that of course the Herald is all over. Folks, wait for the MRI to come. This isn't news, its rumor.

  1. Mark Schlerath and Michael Wilbon went on record at ESPN that they expected someone to take Brady out. Congratulations ESPN, you got what you wanted.

  1. all the sites are speculating as are all of us, but their "sources" only actual quote is "its not good". that could have been said anywhere by anyone at any point during the game or overheard. we know the Pats are tight lipped and i'm sure Billy B will find out who let out any information and we will see someone fired or released over the next days. I'm as worried as the next guy right now. But lets see what happens and deal with what ever happens. We all thought we were cooked in 2001 too.

  1. John Tomase will probably say it was just a bruise and Brady will be good to go for next week
