Video: Key stretch ahead

Posted by Chris Forsberg, Boston.com Staff September 27, 2008 04:00 PM

The Patriots may be idle this weekend, but the Globe's Chris Gasper says the next seven games could define New England's 2008 season. Click on the player below to watch the video, or check out the written summary at the end of this entry.

Written summary

The Patriots have a challenging seven-game stretch coming up that starts with back-to-back games on the West Coast (San Francisco and San Diego) that includes the team staying in California for the entire week. The Patriots return home for a Monday-night matchup with red-hot Denver on Oct. 20, before catching a bit of a breather when the Rams visit the following week. Then it's off to Indianapolis for a Sunday-night game before returning home for back-to-back AFC East battles with Buffalo and the New York Jets. What's more, the Jets game is on a Thursday night, leaving a short week to prepare for a team that will want revenge after a Week 2 loss at Giants Stadium.

Gasper says that coming out of this stretch 4-3 would be acceptable for a team with playoff aspirations, but a disastrous stretch could drastically change the outlook of the 2008 season.

  1. I think we will beat San Fran - doubt we lose two straight. I don't think we will beat both San Diego and Denver, but I think we will win one of those games. The Rams game is a virtual lock (but so was the Dolphins game, but the Rams have looked a lot worse thus far). Then I think we will take 1-2 of the final three in that stretch.

Honestly, we could be 7-3 or we could be 5-5, I couldn't imagine anything worse than .500 after this stretch. However, if the Patriots are at or below .500 following 10 games, I see them makinga big change.

  1. Greg that sounds like realistic expectations and thoughts... we don't get much of that type of stuff around here anymore.
