5k fine for Green-Ellis

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff October 31, 2008 08:07 PM

Rookie RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis has been fined $5,000 by the NFL for a late hit on Rams CB Fakhir Brown in Sunday's 23-16 win over the Rams.

Green-Ellis was not penalized on the play, but based on the fine, he was fortunate not to be.

The play came with 6:10 left in the third quarter, with Matt Cassel looking for Wes Welker down the field. Brown intercepted the pass at the St. Louis 26-yard line and returned the ball up the right sideline, in front of the Patriots' bench. He stepped out of bounds when Green-Ellis leveled him.

  1. Goodell is a clown.

It is only a matter of time before he puts flags on everyone.

  1. It was a bit late, but if that hit drew a fine, we're going to see about 32 fines a week and that seems a little much to me.

  1. Rodney you got out at a good time. What a load of bull. No flag, but a fine. The eye is always watching.

  1. BenJarvus Green-Ellis made a rookie mistake that what rookies do.

Why does the league think fines will help stop rookies from making mistakes but when a vetern player dives head first at Tom Brady's knee cap the league says it's just part of the game.

  1. This is ridicoulous. It was a borderline late hit. Appeal!

  1. The NFL must be really desperate for money, with all these ridiculous fines. Maybe they should change their name to the NFFL. National Flag Football League.

  1. Goodell is micro- managing the game of Football to the point that this sport will be ruined if he is not removed as commisioner soon

  1. This is just ridiculous. Marvin Harrison chases a man down the street and his gun mysteriously shoots someone but there is no fine, or suspension.

Meanwhile, Vince Wilfork's elbow touches a QB and he pays 35k. Oh wait, he got off easy because I saw him point his finger at someone.

    At least it isn't arbitrary.

    LOL.

  1. The league is out of control trying to send a message simply because Green-Ellis and the Pats didn't get a penalty on the play/in the game.

  1. this is awful. considering Green-Ellis probably needs the money.

if its so bad throw the FLAG or give him a warning during the week. whats Goodell's logic? does he honestly think the 4th string running back on the patriots is headhunting and needs to be a taught a lesson.

  1. One foot had just hit out of bounds a split second before the hit in slo-mo.. So you're telling me a player should be able to stop from coming full speed in that instance and not hit the guy... Then what, he does the old, I'm going out...no I'm not and runs it all the way back for a TD.. Absolutely ridiculous fine. This is the American version of football correct, not the English one where everyone flops around if a person gets within a yard of them?? Let the boys play some...

  1. It all started when NOGood_at_all became the judge, jury and executioner. No one person should have that much power. Fine, sustention, etc. need to be handle by a group!

  1. You won't see 32 fines a week unless they are against the Patriots!!! I haven't seen another fine being issued by Goodell against other players in the league, just against the Patriot players!! Goodell is trying to demoralize the Patriot players because no matter who goes down they just keep winning !!Which is messing up his goal for parity and his hopes of the Jets making the Playoffs..The first comment was correct in calling him a clown!!! He still hasn't nailed the K.C. Chief bum who intentionally whacked Brady's Knee!!! I hope he rots in pergatory..Let me add when I say fines I mean fines for excessive hitting,Wilfork probably doesn't even recieve a paycheck it goes straight to Goodell..

  1. Saul, that's perfect... NFFL! The Colts would love it.

  1. What a load of nonsense this fine is. The officials didnt flag him, it was a hard but legitimate hit. Was Moe Lewis flagged?
The kid did exactly the right thing, hustling on an interception.
I hope BB picks up the tab for him!

  1. Any truth to the rumor that Goodell prefers flag-football to contact football and that's the direction he's taking the NFL?

  1. Wow, I really think that the NFL has crossed a line with this one. WAY over the line. Now players can get fined randomly for technically sound hits on the field? Yes, a flag could have been thrown, but a fine? Wow. This is stunning. I would like to believe If the NFL didn't have such a tight leash on the media this kind of move would be lambasted, but I don't know if no journalist is critical of the NFL because of lack of integrity or lack of ability to fight the NFL massive copyright policies.

  1. The bad part about all of this is that Green-Ellis was just playing hard, something he has surely always been coached to do. Furthermore, being an undrafted rookie free agent, he's not exactly raking in the big bucks. Not to mention having spent the first part of the season on the practice squad. Tough luck here, I hope there's an appeal process.

  1. Goodell is still wearing the jersey of his former employer, the New York Jets. IMO, when the commissioner's office does this, they are actually usurping the powers of the on field officials. If Goodell wants to officiate the games, loet him get his NY ass out onto the field and do so. The owners have to take a serious look at this jackass and even go to the point of removing him as commissioner. Many didnt want him to begin with as it took FIVE ballots before hegot elected.

  1. Pollard.....take outs the BEST QB in the game today, puts him in IR,............and NO FINE!

You think Goodell has it out for the Pats????

  1. Our guy, BenJarvus Green-Ellis was fined by "Jets" Goodell $5,000 for a late hit out of bounds.

Just now, number 29 (not sure of name) of the Cardinals literally lifted Torry Holt up and flipped him over, all AFTER the play was over, OUT OF BOUNDS. It almost resulted in a field clearing brawl.

Lets see how "Jets" handles this one.
