Belichick responds to Davis' tampering charge

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff October 1, 2008 12:35 PM

Patriots coach Bill Belichick responded to claims by Raiders owner Al Davis that the Patriots tampered with receiver Randy Moss in 2007.

Davis told reporters yesterday that the Patriots had a private workout with Moss while he was still a member of the Raiders. Belichick said today that wasn't the case.

Speaking with the Globe after his daily press conference, Belichick said:

"I've told the story a hundred times. The first time I talked to Randy was after I talked to Mr. Davis, Saturday night/Sunday morning before the [draft in April 2007], the second day of the draft. I don't know what this workout is. No idea.

"Like I told Mr. Davis when I talked to him that Saturday night, we were talking about the draft pick. I joked 'why don't you send us back the fifth that we gave you for [receiver] Doug Gabriel last year, and he ended up on your team at the end of the year? If you had any courtesy, you would do that.' We laughed. Some trades work out, some don't."

Asked if there was any Patriots workout with Moss before the trade was completed on April 29, 2007, Belichick responded:

"No. The first time I saw Randy in person was when he came in, and when I called him Saturday night after I talked to Mr. Davis. He flew in late Saturday night, got here early Sunday morning."

Davis's comments came yesterday after a press conference announcing the firing of Raiders head coach Lane Kiffin. According to the San Jose Mercury News's Tim Kawakami, Davis was asked why Moss was traded. His response:

"[The new coaches] didn't want him. They were coming in brand new. That was a big thing on their minds. Plus, you know how many teams turned [Moss] down. . . . Green Bay thought he couldn’t run any more. Even Denver, where they’ll take anybody, turned him down.

"What’s his name knew [Moss] could [still] run, he’s a friend of Belichick’s. [Former Raiders executive] Mike Lombardi. Mike sold what’s his name, Belichick, on the idea that he could run. They tampered with him. I remember Bob Kraft saying that he had to look him in the eye and all that. They went down and worked him out, he could run. He’s their team, of course, with the quarterback."

Davis apparently did not file a tampering charge with the NFL.

Moss declined comment on the matter this afternoon.

  1. Between his "firing for cause" and now this rant, I think Al Davis is losing complete control of his faculties. Icon or not, he really needs to step down from day-to-day management of the team. And he also needs to honor the contract he signed with Kiffin and pay the man.

  1. This just is:
Al davis just saw Elvis, uncovered the whereabouts of Whitey Bulger, and knows where Hoffa is barried........wait!, more to come.........He has just spotted Sasquatch on a hiking expedition in Maine.

Isn't Al the guy Anna Nicole married? He looks like the same guy.

  1. Al Davis is a senial old man, I doubt he can even remeber what he had for breakfast this morning, never mind what happened with Randy Moss. He sounds like a sore loser to me...

  1. Why doesn't Al Davis come down and just coach the team himself.
After all he's such a great football man, and knows more than all the coaches
    and all the professional scouts.

I think that Mr. Davis has more money than brains.
At this point he just created this huge soap opera in order not to honor the
contract and stiff the head coach of the money owed.

  1. Brady was reported to be courting Moss for a while

Maybe that's what he's referring to

  1. It is sad that Al Davis has become less believable than Bill Belichick or Robert Kraft. I would've guessed that even with Mr. Davis' apparent diminished faculties that he still remembers the whole fumble, "tuck rule" whatever it was playoff game a few years back.

  1. I love these comments by Boston fans... These are the same fans that the excuse "Manny being Manny" is acceptable to dismiss poor clubhouse behavior. You should understand and not get so defensive if you're so sure he's nuts. Al Davis is the Bay Area's Manny. He is random, crazy, and always good for some newspaper fodder. But you have to recognize that at one point, the organization was great. Since the Super (bowl) Demise, the Raiders have struggled to get back to what they once were. I would gladly put the Oakland fans against any other teams fans as the most committed in the NFL. They just need to get their front office in control. Davis won't let go of the team until he dies. And he and Castro are two that just won't die! For the record, I'm a 49er fan, not a Raider fan.

  1. If any of you beanbrains had WATCHED the press conference you would realize that AL is not senile, and he is quite honest when he (rarely) chooses to talk publicly. He may be manipulative, stubborn, etc., but don't begreduge him the frustration of seeing Moss quit and then play so well last year.

As for Al's allegations of Patriot tampering, I would guess the objective NFL world recognizes your cheating franchise is corrupt and has lost total credibility on this and any future cheating allegations. Al was correct about the Broncos getting caught cheating, and I suspect Belicheat simply doesn't want to admit he had a workout done early on Moss. Ask Mike Lombardi for the truth, as he was the link between the teams.

Oh, and you all surely know the tuck rule "victory" was just more cheating on your behalf. Grow a pair and admit you deserve either asterisks or no trophies at all.

Speaking of growing a pair, isn't it about time you admitted to yourself that you're just holding a "sour grapes" grudge against a superior team? The Tuck Rule Call, as you may recall, was actually the correct interpretation of the rule. And if the Raiders D didn't suck, they could have "overcome" this correct call anyway. But why let the facts get in the way of a good conspiracy theory?

  1. Let's look at the facts here. Patriots received permission to speak with Randy on Saturday. Gick, you typically go to night clubs at night and since the Patriots had already received permission to speak to Randy earlier on Saturday it would then be ok for Brady to speak to Moss that night about becoming a Patriot. From what I understand Randy was on his way to Foxboro when that call was made. I believe you are referring to an article from 9/18/08 in a Providence paper where they reported that Brady rang Randy.

Now all you need to do to find out what the truth is this: (1.) Calls from Patriots and Raiders offices took place on Saturday, permission received on Sat. (2.) Randy's flight took place on late Saturday/early Sunday morning. No other contact was made.

Lastly, the Raiders did receive compensation in the form of a 4th Rd pick. Maybe Davis is upset he got fleeced by only receiving a 4th rounder for an all world player.

Posted by Nikos October 1, 08 02:44 PM
  1. The facts are basic, Randy Moss quit on the Raiders and played like he gave a damn on the Patriots.

Al Davis hired Lane Kiffin to turn around his team, he didn't do that. He made his situation worse by thinking of leaving the Raiders for a college team. Al Davis felt insulted for being the only person to think he could coach a NFL team only to have him flirt with leaving him.

    Shut up.

  1. Gotta love those Raider fans who insist that the NFL is out to get them. The loss in 2001 still sticks in their craw. Get over it already. The record is that Belichek called Davis after the first round of the draft to discuss a trade. It happened and the Pats didn't get to see Moss until just before the 2nd round. No tampering charges were filed 17 months ago when the trade took place because there was no tampering. it's sour grapes on behalf of a guy who traded a WR who didn't play well for the Raiders and then dominated the league the following year with the Pats.

  1. I am a Raider fan and I have not seen the press conference, but I saw a press conference with Al during the off season and he was not senile in the least bit. But, it has become very painful to read stories about the Raiders, let alone watch them on TV. I am particularly troubled by losing another head coach just when it seems that the team was so close to turning the corner to a little respectability.

I also agree with Bo that you cannot deny Al the frustration of watching Moss play so well last year. The last year Moss was with the Raiders, he was dialing in his play, which is why he did not play, he was a bad influence in the club house and I am sure he was not the only one.

    Posted by R8der Fan October 1, 08 02:48 PM
  1. To Bo.......
Consider the "tuck rule" as payback for the old roughing the passer call on Ray Hamilton years ago in the playoff game in Oakland. Even Stabler years later didn't believe it was a penalty. Short memories in Oakland.

Posted by Gordo October 1, 08 02:51 PM
  1. Yeah, sure, Al's not senile... after all, one of his recent coaches (Art Shell) was enough of a dunce to tell the media that Randy Moss was washed up as a wide receiver months before he set the single season TD reception mark. There is nothing but incompetence flowing out of the Oakland front office these days. If he thought New England tampered, he should've just filed a grievance like any other team president would have. Complaining about it 1.5 years after the fact just shows that he's desperate to try and pass some of the blame off of him for how utterly putrid Oakland's football operations have been since the superbowl loss to Tampa.

  1. Sorry MJ but wearing Halloween costumes to games does not a great fan base make. Al Davis was once a cutting edge owner who got ahead on his wiles. But that was back in the '70's and that's where his mind currently resides. The guy used an overhead projector yesterday (seriously) and had no idea who was going to introduce his coach. The rebel image of the Raiders used to be good for the league - just like the bad guy wearing black at professional wrestling matches. Now, in a league full of embarrassing people like Pacman, Al Davis is the league's biggest embarrassment. He needs a good retirement home and needs to get there quickly.

Posted by Lance October 1, 08 02:55 PM
  1. Al Davis is not senile; he's just calling a spade a spade. Obviously he doesn't give a crap what people think - it's his organization to run amid the regular media rumor mill and publicity mongers. Yet, when he sets the record straight he get still gets lambasted!

    Posted by R October 1, 08 03:05 PM
  1. Bo Schembechler Jackson,

Here's a deal, we'll accept the asterisks only if the Raiders accept the same asterisks for all of their players being on Steroids in the 1970s. And the Steelers too. 49ers and Broncos accept them for violating the salary cap. And the Colts accept one for pumping noise into their dome. Oh, and Jimmy Johnson admitted the Cowboys stole signs as well, they also get the asterisk. Hey, congrats Detroit, the looks like the 1957 Lions were now the last "real" champion.

Stop wyinhing over a play that was correctly called on a rule that was so onerous it is still in place!

And as for the "objective NFL" you sspeak of, your words clearly take you out of the running as being a member. So go crawl back to your black hole and cry softly to yourself about how the mighty Raiders have become the laughing stock of a league that still has both the Arizona Cardinals and Detroit Lions in it.

  1. Perhaps you don't remember, but before the tuck rule call came the 1976 Ben Dreith robbery of a Pats win over the Raiders that cost NE a Super Bowl. What goes around... "A controversial roughing the passer call set up Raiders quarterback Ken Stabler's winning touchdown with 10 seconds left in the game. Late in the final period, a roughing the passer penalty on Patriots tackle Ray "Sugar Bear" Hamilton nullified a third down incompletion and gave the Raiders an automatic first down deep in New England territory (instead of 4th and 10). Replays would later clearly show that there was no illegal contact, but the call setup Stabler's game-winning touchdown. Oakland avenged its only loss of the year, which came at the hands of the Patriots.

Given their miserable performance against Tampa Bay and their old coach the next year, its a given that they probably would have been slaughtered in the 2001 Super Bowl against the Rams. Three super bowl rings and an undefeated season later, the Pats continue to show their vast superiority to the bumbling losers in Oaktown.

Bill Belichick - "Randy...run up that grassy knoll".
Bob Kraft, holding stop watch - "Slow. Maura could burn him in a 40. Jonathan, get me a Scotch"
Dantae Scarnecia - "How about I fire a gun at him from that building over there to see if he can run faster if motivated?"
Belichick - "Better idea. Let's just have the best QB in the league fire a long pass to him. Tom?"
    Brady - "Play coach?"
Belichick - "Pump fake a post to the right. Moss take off on the left. Get to the top of the knoll on a 5 count and look over your right shoulder for the ball".
Moss - "You serious? I have not worked with a real QB in 5 years. OK. Let's go."
Belichek - "Make sure that Zapruda guy gets this on film"

But you are more bitter about Gannon's five TDs in the Super Bowl (three to Tampa). 1. I worked at Oakland Coliseum on game days for a few seasons, and I can say with certainty that Al Davis is one of the oldest and most fragile people I have ever seen outside of a nursing home. His luxury suite was nearby where I was stationed and he needed help from several people just to get up the 5 or 6 stairs leading into his suite, and bear in mind this was in 2001 and 2002. I can only imagine what it is like now. Granted, his mind is hopefully in better shape than his body, but he is in much worse shape than he appears on television and in photos. I wouldn't want him in charge of my favorite NFL team, that's for sure.

  1. Schembechler, Spriggs and Rob need to get real. First off, I do agree Moss quit on the Raiders, but let's all get real about the tampering. He said the coaches didn't want him and I would suspect he was willing to go along with their wishes on this. Davis knew Moss had become a cancer to the team and wanted him gone like the coaches did.
You have to get real about the Pats having no credability on this. Davis is extremely bitter, mostly due to the team being so bad for so long. As for the Tuck Rule, It's still on the books, so it couldn't have been that bad.

  1. "Bo Jackson" -

Like so many Patriot haters, you hide your team's inferiority behind the "they cheat" mantra and apply it to every situation in which the Patriots outsmart other teams and other front offices. Moss left the Raiders because they were completely dysfunctional and he knew they were going nowhere fast; whether the Pats tampered or not is pretty immaterial since he wasn't sticking around no matter what. And given the lies Al Davis is currently spouting about Kiffin I'd say he has way less credibility than Belichick and Kraft.

And how the tuck rule is cheating is beyond me. The refs made the call and the call was right based on the rules of the time. There are good reasons why the Raiders are being left behind in the dustbin of history and harping on the tuck rule play is one of them. The Raiders used to be one of my favorite teams back when they knew how to play defense and I've always respected the insanity of Raiders fans but every time one of you cites the tuck rule play from the snow bowl you lose more credibility and respect from the NFL world. Move on for Christs sake.

The Patriots are winners because they've been able to figure out how to motivate players like Moss and the Raiders are losers because they couldn't. It makes absolutely no sense for Davis to make these tampering charges 1 1/2 years after the fact but say and do nothing about this issue for the previous year and a half.

The tuck rule was called by an official, not by the Patriots. Why can't you sore losers understand that? YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT THE WORD "OBJECTIVE" MEANS.

Poor losers use the "cheating" word. Can't you acknowledge that Moss played better because he was on a good team with a good quarterback. Good performances have nothing to do with cheating.

Now that Tom Brady is out I would go out on a limb and say that Pats fans will start to see some of this firsthand. As far as cheating by working Moss out early... The ranting of a vindictive miserly paranoid out of control CEO does not come close to the mania that Al Davis is evoking. This person AD is the most self centered NFL owner that has ever occupied the position there of.
Bo said "If any of you bean brains had WATCHED the press conference you would realize that AL is not senile, and he is quite honest when he (rarely) chooses to talk publicly."
Mr. Davis is neither honest nor mentally fit to own a franchise anymore. Part of his ignorance is what the Raider fans have daily knowledge of and that is that the Raide’s have been, are, and continued to be screwed because of Al Davis. When is this craziness going to end.

  1. RE:"Al Davis is a senile old man..." not so! if you paid any attention yesterday, he knew who played/what down/ who was on/off roster/how many timeouts left for how many seconds of play etc etc...
Al is still all there, he's just plain wrong. To me the glaring "at fault" players in this tragedy are in the Raiders front office. What I thought came through yesterday is that Al Davis' decisions are made from the misinformation he's getting from the likes of John Herrera et al.
I don't know why they hated Kiffin, maybe they felt threatened by the "new blood"/maybe they're just interested in consolidating their positions for when the inevitable happens (you know what I mean). What Al Davis should do is either back off operations completely, and we know that won't happen, or find more trustworthy liason people, who have the interest of the team at heart.
My solution: clean house, sack half the front office!... oh and get Kiffin back!

  1. Davis makes all the decisions in Oakland, he let Moss go and the blame is all his. I'm sick of Al Davis, his press conference yesterday was utterly disgraceful, spiteful and unnecessary... I've followed the Raiders for twenty years and my father in law told me (in the early 90's) that the Raiders would never succeed with that miserable old man in charge and he wouldn't watch the Raiders again until Davis quit or passed away... I wish I'd listened then...I'll keep my eye on the Obituaries.

  1. I think the several "what's his name" references during his press conference is telling...

Part of what's going on here, I believe, is that he's probably teed off that Moss performed so well on the Pats last season, yet sub-par for the Raiders in his two (?) seasons there. But here's the kicker, Mr. Davis (and to others in the league who still don't quite "get it" about the Patriots): The primary reason Moss performed well last season is because he was on a good TEAM, in a good ORGANIZATION, playing in a honed, well-designed SYSTEM in New England. It's not a coincidence that "stars" who leave New England for perceived greener pastures don't end up performing as well as expected and that wiley veterans (Harrison, Seau) or "malcontents" (Dillon) in the latter stages of their careers come here end up playing well. It's about the TEAM, (just win) baby!

  1. How did the patriots cheat during the tuck rule victory? As far as I know the Patriots had no involvement in the refs decision and it would be rediculous to suggest otherwise. An for those of us who did watch the press conference "Schembechler", Davis looked like an idiot up there. Nothing he was saying made any sense at all. The only way you could make sense of anything he was saying is if you were on the same sedatives he was on.

  1. Bo Schembechler Jackson ...
You are just a sorry Raiders Fan who couldn't win the Super Bowl. You had your chance the year after the "Tuck Rule" against Tampa Bay and you still couldn't win. You were whipped up on by the Bucs and your former coach, Jon Gruden, who if Mr. Davis really was smart would have done anything to keep! The Patriots are a model franchise and everyone wishes they had Belichick just like the wish they had Moss... If you took the Patriots entire team and staff and put them in Black & Silver with your precious Raiders emblem, you would be happy as a pig in s**t with no talk of cheating or anything else! Just deal with it that your franchise is goint to continue to suck for a long time until Al Davis either sells the team or passes away. AND YOU KNOW THIS.... MAN!

  1. From Wikipedia:
    Coaching career
Davis' first coaching experience in professional football came as the offensive end coach of the Los Angeles Chargers from 1960 to 1962. In 1963, at the age of 33, and known then and now for his slicked-back hair, Brooklyn-tinged speech, dark glasses and ferocious competitiveness, Davis became the head coach and general manager of the AFL's Oakland Raiders. He was the youngest person in the history of professional football to hold these positions. Prior to Davis' arrival, the Raiders had compiled a 9-33 record in their first three years of existence. Davis led the team to a 10Ð4 record in 1963 and was unanimously named the American Football League Coach of the Year.
Davis compiled a coaching record of 23Ð16Ð3 in three seasons as head coach in Oakland.

  1. If you gauge the comments by the local media in the Bay Area market, this so-called "diatribe" by Davis was nothing short of "unbelivable" and "surreal." As a former New Englander now living in the Bay Area, any team other than the 49ers or Raiders (or in any sport for that matter) elicts the best (or worst) of emotions. MJ is right though, Davis wont go quietly, nor will his grasp of the team - although you can never tell sometimes given his health has gone down hill. They'll, in his words, take him down and take him down hard. As far as Kiffin, its sad in a way to see him get caught up in problems that go back to when Bill Callahan had the team. Mike Shanahan and Lane Kiffin know now the meaning of dealing with Mr. Davis. Roger Goodell I am sure is watching for the papers to come...and the (gulp) potential lawsuits in federal court coming if it gets that far.

P.S.: I am still a Pats fan no matter what.

  1. The only honest things Crazy Al said were "I have just fired Lane Kiffen" and "I didn't hire the man I thought I hired." He thought he hired a 33 year old "yes man" that he could push around. He was sick of dealing with more experienced coaches who wanted things their way. So he went out and got himself a wide eyed youngster he thought he could push around. Turned out the guy had a backbone, how dare he!

Oh an MJ you are right about one thing, the Raiders have the most dedicated and crazy fans in the NFL. I went to games at the old Foxboro stadium, had to beg my father to take me. I don't remember it being all that full.

  1. To the tool who calls himself "Bo Schembechler Jackson", the "tuck rule" is just that, a rule. Interpreted correctly then, and still on the books now.

When you change someone's name to establish your point, you've lost your point. "Belicheat" says more about you than them.

Spygate was a media creation. A minor infraction that has been entirely blown out of proportion.

This "tampering" charge has no merit whatsoever. But you run with it out of pure unadulterated hatred.

Says a whole lot more about you than it does about the Patriots.

Anyway, this seems really ticky-tack to me. If not, someone please explain in detail why Davis, who okay-ed the trade like 18 months ago, should be complaining.

  1. To and MJ, what the heck are you guys smokin? Al Davis was an embarrasment to the Oakland Raiders and the NFL. His press conference was a sham to set up why he won't pay Kiffin. Hell, he still owes Shanahan. Davis is a cheap, stubborn, back stabbing weasel. When you sign a contract with someone, you should live up to it. If you want to fire the guy, fire him, but live up to the contract and pay the man. I won't argue that Moss quit on the Raiders. That is low. The good news is in the NFL you can cut somebody that isn't performing. Moss had plenty of reason for being unhappy, as evidenced by the story we saw told yesterday.

The Patriots di break a rule, but never hid it or lied about it. In that respect, I can honestly call it a rule violation and not cheating. The taping was being done at every game, in plain sight. There was never any shred of information that supported the idea that the tapes were being used during the game, which I definitely would have called cheating. So how do come up with corrupt? Credibility? Name a more winning franchise in the last 8 years. With all of the scrutiny this team has gone through, you have anything else? No, i didn't think so. You root for a loser and a losing franchise. I did too, a long time ago. But not anymore. So you grow a pair and take your lumps like you should. With Davis running the show, I don't see Oakland getting a sniff at a Championship.

"Tuck Rule"? Probably should have been ruled a fumble, but it wasn't. Get over it. We could always go back to the 70's and dredge up a horrific call that gave the Raiders a playoff victory, but what's done is done. I never thought the Raiders were cheaters, just a bunch of dirty players.

  1. Grow up! Even then head coach Art Shell, had nothing but negative comments to say about Moss. He clearly stated that "Moss would drive Belichick nuts", and that he would tear apart the team--let alone couldn't run anymore. It's funny that this just 'comes out now,' not after last yrs record setting performance, but during a team breakdown rant when he's on the hot seat.If there was ANY truth to this, he SURELY would've said something WAY before yesterday. How 'bout right before the super bowl in February? Seems that'd be what all of America would've wanted. They should include this in the Wikipedia definition of 'haters.' The Pats went 14-2 twice and 16-0 in past 5 yrs, now it's all about Moss. Please.

  1. I used to like the Raiders before the "black hole" and the goofy costumes the fans wear. My disdain for the Raiders dropped even more when they still whine about the "tuck rule". If my memory serves me, that play did not win the game for the Pats. The Raiders still had more time in regulation and game went overtime. Bottom line they could not get it done. And this is even more ridiculous; why did he not file a complaint with NFL 17 months ago?

The state of california should pull the eminent domain law into effect and have a new owner.Take the money from what the state gives him and put it all into a retirement home just for him.The home wont take HIM unless the facility is offered all that money from that sale.He still thinks the Raiders lost yesterday from the BS tuck rule.

  1. Im not even sure what Davis's point is. That because the Patriots held an alleged workout that they knew that Moss "could still run" and therefore caused the Raiders to trade him away for nothing? Wouldnt the Raiders themselves know he could still run and hold out for more in return?

  1. Conspiracy theories aside, (and YES I'm being totally serious here), the whole "video thing" was *mostly* about videotaping the other teams CHEERLEADERS.

Why do you think the NFL conveniently got rid of those tapes? Ever ask yourself that???

How many excuses can we make for why the tapes mysteriously "disappeared" err got destroyed? (by accident *of course*...)

All of the teams do that. But what an embarrassment it would have been for the NFL if this got out, hence you never heard about it.

And surly I *don't* jest. I know, I know, there's no way on Earth that this could be. (and you also believe that Sarah Palin is a genius too and that there really *were* weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.)

I have it on good authority from someone (other than a team member) who works for the franchise.

    Now let the flames begin.
