Belichick's Q&A
SAN DIEGO – Comments from Bill Belichick following his team’s 30-10 loss to the Chargers:
Opening statement
“San Diego obviously did a good job tonight, a lot better than we did. They hit the deep balls on us. They did a good job of getting field position in the kicking game, and offensively. They were able to keep us out of the end zone, until the end. They played a solid game in all three phases. They just did a better job than we did. Give them credit. We need to work harder and just do a better job all the way around than we did tonight. It’s as simple as that.”
How did you feel about the week of preparation?
“Good. I thought it was good.”
Did that opening big play set the tone for the game?
“They’re a down-the-field passing team. It didn’t surprise us. They did a good job with it. We didn’t do a good job with it. Like Norv [Turner] said, that’s what his offense is and that’s what it is; lots of runs and deep shots, deep-ball passing. That’s what they did. We just didn’t defend it as well as we needed to.”
What happened on the first series of the second half, when you got to the 1?
“We couldn’t get it in. Just didn’t get it in down there. It certainly would have helped us and made it a one-score game. We weren’t able to make the plays and they made them. That’s why they won tonight. They made more than we did, and made them down there on the goal-line.
Do the injuries to the secondary affect your game?
“No. We ran what we wanted to run.”
Two of the last three games, you lost big. Do you miss Tom Brady that much? Is it putting more pressure on the defense because you’re not scoring as much as you were a year ago?
“Tonight, I thought that San Diego played better than we did. They did a better job than we did at all three phases of the game. That’s how I would assess it.”
Is it different this year playing from behind?
“We’ve just got to do a better job all the way around.”
How would you assess Matt Cassel?
“I think, again, in all three phases, we weren’t good enough tonight, or as good as San Diego was. They outperformed us in all three phases. I don’t know how else to say it. Give them credit. They played well, better than we did. They played better and coached better. They deserved to win.”
Did you give any thought at all to challenging [Malcolm] Floyd’s touchdown?
“I didn’t have enough to. Based on what I saw, we didn’t have enough evidence to challenge it.”
Would you say you see improvement from week to week?
“I think we did some things well tonight, but not enough of them. We need to do more. There are still some positive things out there. The Chargers had more than we did. That’s the bottom line.”
How would you assess Deltha O’Neal?
“I would say the same thing about everybody. They did a better job than we did. I would say that about the players, the coaches, the whole works. The San Diego Chargers were better than the New England Patriots tonight. That’s across the board.”

Personally I thought the Chargers just did a better job across the board tonight....but that's just my opinion.
Hang in there Pats fans....luckily these stinkers only count as one loss. We're gonna have to take some lumps watching Cassel grow, but hopefully he comes around.
Wonder why they didn't stay with the 5 wide more after we moved it straight down the field with it. Hope they use it more next week. Big bounce back game vs. Denver.
Go Pats!
Everyone's laying it on Cassel. I agree he didn't have a good game by any means, but lets give the kid a break here ...
I was at the game tonight, and the fact is when we're already down 7-0 on the road in a hostile environment before Cassel steps on the field, forget it. The Q was loud tonight, the charger wanted blood and we folded.
Do you think Cassel has what it takes to play from behind all game? Hell no, but neither do the other backups we have right now.
BOTTOM LINE: OUR D, WHICH WON US OUR 3 SUPER BOWLS, IS NOT THERE. And god bless Matt Cassel if he has to keep playing from behind, especially without a starting running back
Coach -- question.
Which team made more plays out there? They did.
Which team made the plays they needed to to win? They did.
And, they executed all 3 phases of the game, correct? yes, all 3 phases.
Will you work hard to do a better job next week, across the board? yes.
And there you have all you will ever get from a Belichick press conference following a loss. What's the point? We already know all the answers.
Dont lay it all out on Cassell ???? we don't have the starting running back???
What have you been watching ??? badmitton ??? Matt Cassell is not even a fair second string college quarterback ...let alone the pros...Sammy Morris got twice as many yards as Maroney ever would have gotten in the same game
Cassell's incompetence and failure to lead this team into the end zone has has had a negative effect on the entire team... .
Right on Sonny, footballs a game of emotion and Cassell has none. John Madden picked apart all he weaknesses last night. Holds on to the ball too long, won’t take chances, can’t throw down field, no percents’ in the pocket. I was obvious that this team quit on him after he could not direct them to a score on 1st and goal from the 1. I expect a lot more of these stinkers this year !
Mike, seriously. Why do you even print Belichick's comments? It's a waste of all of our time - yours to ask the question and ours to read the rote answers.
