Patriots coach Bill Belichick held his regular day-after-game conference call with media members today (5 p.m. EDT) and here were a few items of note:
1) LaMont Jordan ‘looks like a pretty quick healer.’ Patriots running back LaMont Jordan left Sunday’s game in the second quarter with a leg injury and did not return. Asked about Jordan’s status, Belichick said he “looks like a pretty quick healer”, which seemingly is an indication that the injury isn’t too serious. Belichick said Jordan got treatment today and “we’ll have to see how he is later in the week.”
2) Setting the schedule. Belichick said the team is planning its work week as if it had just played a home game. That meant players had film review today, they’ll be off tomorrow, and then the team will begin practicing Wednesday. The plan is to travel to San Diego on Saturday, which is usually the day the Patriots leave for road games.
3) Laurence Maroney in focus. Running back Laurence Maroney played 17 snaps and finished with just 26 yards on 10 carries, and at one point did not lunge forward for a first down as he raced to the sideline. Belichick was asked if the team is getting the type of production it should be from Maroney at this point in his career. “Yeah, I think Laurence has done a good job for us," he responded. "I think he’s a good back. He’s played well and I think he’ll continue to play well.”
I am surprised to hear Coach Belichick say that about Maroney. He has been a disappointment in my eyes this year. While he is still very young (23), I had hoped he would be playing a more vital role in the offense by his 3rd season. Considering the boost Addai gives to the Colts or Jones-Drew gives to the Jags, you have to wonder if Belichick regrets taking Maroney so high. Still he has lots of time to prove himself, and I am rooting for him. Let's go Pats!
I was wondering about Jordan, glad he is likely to be back in action within a week.
As for Maroney, as Matt says above if he continues at this rate he will be a disappointment, to me anyway. However, I can't imagine Belichick saying so regardless of what he actually thinks. "He's a good back" could easily be classic Belichick if you know what I mean.
Laurence maroney is terrible!!!!!!!! Start S. Morris, give him 20 carries a game, and you will be all set.
I Hate to say it, but I think Maroney needs to watch films of his ex running mate in college (M. Barber) and run with a little more conviction. Laurence, please quit the dancing and hit the holes. Or are you scared !
Bill isn't being truthful about Maroney. It doesn't take a genuis to figure out he is not with the program. He taking the high road but history will show we will less of him as he continues to not perform.
So where exactly are the Patriots headquartered for the week? Some college stadium?
Mike, you mention that the team will travel to SD on Saturday. This means they will travel from San Francisco, correct? What kind of practice and living accommodations do they have for this strange trip?
Maroney looks a little worried about putting his shoulder down. I wonder if he is a little gun shy about his previous injury? He needs to get over it or he becomes a liability. His unwillingness to get the first down when he only needed a couple of inches could have been much more costly than it was.
One thing is certain about BB, he never throws his players under the bus, no matter how obvious their play is. I think that one of the major reasons for BB's success is that he keeps matters in-house. I imagine that what BB says in public about LM's performance is 180 degrees opposite of what is said in the coaches' offices.
Billichecks a damn lie, but he wont throw someone under the bus that is still on the team. I.E Patrick Pass, he was a nice versatile fullback who seemed to do a little of everything, and was always praised, but after his release reports came out that he was a dog, and I think he was more valuble than Maroney is right now seeing as though he is the least talented back on a team with 3 other backs on the back nine of their careers, thats unnaceptable for a 1st round pick. The only thing keepin him from being a bust is the fact he is a running back so not much offense to learn, but for # 21 pick he could easily be considered a bust IMO,
BB may not throw him under the bus, but that did not exactly sound like a ringing endorsement.
