Cassel named AFC Offensive Player of the Week
Patriots QB Matt Cassel has been named AFC Offensive Player of the Week.
Cassel completed 18 of 24 passes for 185 yards with a career-high three touchdowns and a 136.3 passer rating as the Patriots defeated the Broncos 41-7 on Monday.
This is Cassel's first AFC Offensive Player of the Week award. Past Patriots quarterbacks to win the award include Drew Bledsoe, Tom Brady, Tony Eason, and Scott Zolak. Patriots quarterback Doug Flutie won AFC Special Teams Player of the Week in 2005 (Week 17).

I would just like to point out, that this far, in the 2008 season, Carson Palmer has a QB rating of 69, and Matt Lienart can't get a game. Neither has received Player of the Week awards - and none looks like getting it at the pace they're on.
So, can the "hasn't started a game since high school" crows please put that in their pipe and smoke it :-)
Davo
Well if that doesn't help the kid's confidence, nothing will.
Ha, good for him!
Didn't he take about 15 sacks?
Congrats Matt! Let's build off that performance...good job!
Uh, no offense, but why would Cassel win AFC OPOTW for pretty pedestrian stats? Is it because his expectations were so low? Heck, Sammy Morris accrued more yards than Cassel did. LenDale White must be ticked off!
Well done Cassell! Something positive to build upon.
Matt already has more Offensive Player of the Week awards than former #1 pick JaMarcus Russell. If you listen to JaMarcus speak, it raises serious doubts about any team that thought JaMarcus had the mental capacity to be a star QB in the NFL.
Mark, I'm not sure when 3 td's and a 139 QB rating became 'pedestrian'
Offensive is right!!!! I find it offensive he was even considered for this prestigious award. The judges must have been wearing their “Hochuli Glasses” when Cassel threw the interception in the end zone (that was overturned by a Belichick challenge), or when he was sacked six times standing there like a statue waiting for Randy Moss to shake off Champ Bailey (while his other receivers ran wide open in the end zone). What a joke. Did any of the judges actually watch the game?? If I was Cassel, I would donate the award to Sammy Morris.
Wow, that's it, just wow..
Alright! Way to go Matt! We are all pulling for you buddy!
136.3 passer rating....I know that's some "cookbook" formula that's been devised....but I really don't think that is "pretty pedestrian"...cut the kid some slack!
If only his actual performance looked as good as his stats!
[Thank you Sammy Morris for being the true AFC offensive player of the week.]
That's pretty good for a guy who didn't even make the Globe's own "UP" catagory.
Good for him. That's pretty cool.
It should have gone to the Denver Defense, but anything that builds Cassel's confidence is good for this team.
Good for Casell, heck of game, go Pats!
well considering that it was amoung his first five starts, and that the o-line was doing a terrible job i think he defenintly deservs it
I'm suprised it's not Sammy Morris but I'm very glad to hear that Cassel's work has been recognized.
Cassel is the greatest living QB.
He should easily win the MVP award.
I think that one should have to have an IQ test before they are allowed to use a computer and the internet.
There are really some MORONS that call themselves football/Patriots fans.
Ummm Lendale White or Chris Johnson should have got this. C'mon really, Cassel???
david......if it will get me high yes....I will smoke it
Forget the award. With or without the award Cassel played a darn fine game. It doesn't matter one way or the other if it was the best offensive performance in the league for the week. I was a darn find performance on its own.
Great game Matt.....You got the talent, brains, and skills to play in the NFL and your patience and hard work is finally paying off.
matt.i always believed in you .you are starting to become a snowball rolling down a hill.afc offensive player of the week.not too many players win this.
keep using the play-action stuff, your running game is now starting to help you out.
good work cass, keep bringing it.use the screen pass to kevin faulk too.kudos!good job, man!
Don't get too pleased with Cassel's performance. How many of those "pass completions" were completed behind the line of scrimmage? Those aren't passes, they should be called "long handoffs". One of the guys here nicknamed him "sidewinder" because he's facing perpendicular to the line of scrimmage on all those "long handoffs".
Can anyone say "QB Controversy"?
