Chargers chatter

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff October 13, 2008 03:18 AM

Comments from the Chargers following their 30-10 victory over the Patriots:

QB Philip Rivers
(on the first pass setting the tone for the game)
"Yeah, I think it did. It certainly gave us a spark. Vincent [Jackson] made a great play on the ball. It wasn't one of my better throws down the field, but it was big. It got us going. We talk about starting fast and I think it just kind of got us going. The first play of the game, hitting one like that, and we just kind of kept it going from there. The defense kept giving us opportunities. We didn't take advantage of all of them, but we certainly did some good things."

QB Quentin Jammer
(on the third quarter being a turning point)
"I think it took a lot out of the Patriots, offensively and defensively. Any time you stop a team on the 2-yard yard line and then drive it 98 yards, it's deflating to anybody."

Coach Norv Turner
(on why the Chargers went with the deep ball)
"We've thrown the deep ball in every game. I think the biggest thing for us was matchups."

(on the game)
"I think the biggest thing for me was I thought the uys executed the plan we put together. I thought our coaches put together a good plan. We wanted to be physical in the football game. I thought we were physical in most of the ways we played. We needed to play a complete game. I thought we were able to get that done."

Running back LaDainian Tomlinson
(on the victory)
"It seems like we play our best when we need a win and our backs are against the wall. I wish we would approach every game like that. It was a defense over there and putting up 30 points on them wasn't easy. [Our] defense obviously played well and really truly held them to three points; we gave them a turnover and they were able to score again at the end of the game."

Receiver Vincent Jackson
(on the team's plans to use the deep ball)
"It was the play of the week. We started talking about it on Thursday so it wasn't a surprise to me. It was either going to be the first or second play of the game from what Norv said so I was ready to run it and I was excited he said to start off like that."

(on if there was a purpose to the play)
"To send a message and set the tone, but it was strategic as well. We knew how they were going to play. Their cornerbacks like to play off, but they also like to come downhill. We just ran a seam route to make it look like it was going to be a 7, which is a deeper route, [O'Neal] kind of settled his feet, and I just went by him."

  1. Let's face it, the Pats have two glaring weaknesses:
    1) Their defensive team speed is poor. The LB's and DB's are consistently getting beat by the other team's skill positions. They should bring in the younger players (Guyton, Crable, etc) who have more speed. And they'll need to draft well on D.
    2) Their interior offensive linemen aren't handling the rush and it's hurting their run game and they can't protect the QB, let him step up, etc...

They're not a very good team. They do have some excellent players: DL, some great WR's, but at this point their weaknesses do not let them play to their strengths.
