Mayo: NFL Defensive Rookie of the Month

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff October 30, 2008 12:01 PM

Patriots linebacker Jerod Mayo has been named the NFL's Defensive Rookie of the Month.

Mayo, a first-round selection (No. 10 overall) from Tennessee, led the team with 24 tackles in the month as the Patriots posted a 3-1 (.750) record in October.

Overall, Mayo has started all seven games at inside linebacker. The rookie leads the team with 55 tackles and has also added one fumble recovery. Mayo posted his best performance of the month in his first appearance on Monday Night Football against Denver (Oct. 20), registering 11 tackles.

Mayo is the first Patriots player to earn Rookie of the Month honors since wide receiver Deion Branch in September of 2002, and he is the first New England player to win Defensive Rookie of the Month since the league started the award in 1996.

  1. Aqib Talib of the Bucs has 3 Ints. A week ago, Matt Bowen at the national football post is saying that Mayo has not got his vote for Defensive Rookie of the Year because he didn't do anything other than registering tackle. This is a good start for Mayo. But to get the Defensive Rookie of the Year, he needs more FF/Fumble Recover/Int.

  1. I've read Matt Bowen on the NFP before and it's suprising how he turned from player to journalist rather quickly. You're right - you don't win awards with tackles unless your Patrick Willis shattering the record. What Bowen may not have mentioned is that his tackles are so solid there is no messing around; he wraps you up and takes you down. To many guys are just trying to hit someone or jar the ball loose and never execute their job the way he does. Honestly I think that's why we picked him, he's just solid.

  1. This guy is a stud ...it speaks volumes when he plays in almost all of the snaps in a game as a rookie in a Belichik defensive system.

So glad they traded down three spots in the 1st round and still got the guy they wanted.

    Pass the Mayo !

How is Gholston doing for the lousy JetTs ?

  1. I think he is simply a disciplined rookie. He rarely gets fooled. I also think he is freeing up AD.

  1. Did anyone else see Aqib Talib get beaten badly numerous times in the last 2 weeks? I did!

  1. Wasn't it up to (and maybe including) this year that it was believed no rookie could ever step in and start as a Patriot's linebacker because the schemes and concepts would be far too much for them to learn in just one year? This kid has not only started from Game 1 (meaning he learned everything he needed to from Draft Day until then) and performed well enough to get an award. I mean, not just "admirably" or "passing" but Really, Really well. Very impressive, hope the Pats lock him up for the next 10 years and he gets to decorate his fingers with plenty of rings.

  1. it's a nice honor

but who cares about these awards

    it's about the team

if mayo doesn't get rookie of the year and we win the superbowl... would you care?

  1. I know a Jets fan who said we reached for Mayo and Gholston was going to be the 2nd coming. Welll he wasn't far off.....Mayo was a great grab from the middle of the drafting class and Gholston is making big paper looking like the model LB while playing like a super model.

  1. mayo can play a whole lot better than this. i expect some strips/sacks/ints from him before the end of the year.

  1. Well Deserved! This is why we should be playing more young players. Speed, athleticism, and hustle can out weight some experience. But you can get experience if you don't play. Think how good and young this team could be next year when Brady gets back. Good young LB's and DB's, confident backup QB to take over when we are up by 20 plus. Lets use this year wisely.

  1. I wouldn't want Mayo to be trying too hard to get INTs, FFs and sacks.

Just focusing on stuffing the run and racking up the tackles is more than enough for a rookie.

  1. Mayo's apparently everything Katzenmoyer wasn't. And to think some people questioned if Belichick, Pioli and scouts were capable of picking a first-rate NFL linebacker from the college ranks. Its a huge accomplishment for a rookie to start at ILB in this defense. Think of all those who failed (Chad Brown) or had difficulty making the adjustment from OLB (Vrabel). Even Bruschi had to gradually learn the position - he was a part-time pass rush specialist his first year or two. Kudos to Mayo and Pats personnel people.

  1. Yep, I think the Pats picked a winner with this young man. The FF/FR/Ints will come with time I suspect. A rookie who understands his job, in this system, so early is pretty amazing.

  1. He is a great LB that likes to win that's it. He almost left TN because of their record. TN was one of just a few teams to stop Felix and McFadden from running crazy aka (THE WILDCAT). What everyone forgot is. He came out his JR year.
