No suspension for Wilfork

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff October 29, 2008 10:03 AM

Patriots nose tackle Vince Wilfork, who met with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell yesterday in New York, will not be suspended.

The website profootballtalk.com first reported the news this morning. That news has been confirmed.

Wilfork's meeting with Goodell concerned rules-breaking play, as Wilfork had been fined four times last season. Most recently, the NFL Network reported that Broncos coaches sent film to the NFL from the Oct. 20 Patriots-Broncos game showing Wilfork elbowing quarterback Jay Cutler after a play.

  1. Can't you confirm this? Do you really trust fansites? Quoting them really doesn't really confirm anything and it's not that professional. I mean... come on... a fansite?

  1. do the broncos coaches really feel good about "tattling"?

  1. GOOD. Hes one of my favourite players on the team. I wonder if this talk with the Commish was a kind of final warning?

  1. It's kind of nice to see folks trying to take down the Pats again. BB "takes a shot at Peyton" on SI, Broncos and Rams sending tapes to the league. Nobody's sending in tape or calling out the Lions or Bengals.

  1. This is a great decision by the NFL and Commissioner Goodell. They finally got one right. The Broncos should now be fined and docked draft picks for wasting the Commissioner's time. That's got to be more serious than putting a video camera in the wrong place.

  1. Denver, now? Everyone likes snitching on the Pats!

  1. Hi Greg. That information has been confirmed. I would not have written it if it wasn't. I give them credit because I would not have been on to the story if not for their initial report.

  1. I'm tired of all this. If you have to rewind a film 25 times and play it in super slow motion to detect a possible infraction such as Wilforks elbow to the helmet....where else are you going to search for penalties. Does anyone in that office remember playing football?? Your job on the defensive line (as taught in grade school) is to claw, crawl and push your way to interrupt/hit the QB. The speed of this game is so quick that punishable hits (especially suspension) better be blatantly avoidable or after the whistle. If your not sure, fine him a couple bucks and move on.

I'm not just writing as a Pats fan...I thought the hit on Brady was clean and never questioned it. I'm a fan of football, not Monday morning footage reviews looking for someone poking a QB in his bellybutton or calling his mother dirty names. ENOUGH!!!

  1. Wow no suspension? I bet the commish must have a bounty of Kraft products at the house.

  1. Its unbelievable that wilfork gets fined for this and pollard gets offscott free for his hit on brady not saying that was malicious but at the very least it was a foul that ended the season of a premier qb something that too many people credit cutler with being

  1. oh yeah like the bronco's never do anything illegal

  1. What a joke, please its called football everyone does these things. Good for Vince for being physical and mental on the football field. Are we going to start fining the guys that pinch and elbow players on the field while in a big pile trying to recover a fumbled football. I think this league has to grow a pair and learn this stuff always happened when the league first started and coaches could give a rats a@# about little petty stuff like this. Cocahes should be focused on winning and not these little tattel tales (Eric Manigini). Play the game!!!!

  1. This commissioner is becoming more and more of a joke. I for one am getting sick of his policing of the league. It one thing to have rules, but he is treating these men like elementary student and he is their principle. Enough already, if it is not flagrant, drug or legal issues bud out. I think everyone is sick of hearing you in the news dragging down the league.
The NFL needs to get rid of this guy, he's done nothing to help the league and it's starting to lose some of it popularity since he has taken over.

  1. I agree it's turning into powder puff league. Hines Ward was heavily fined for what was ruled a clean, legal hit! How sad is that? If you don't like the hit, make it illegal, or you CANNOT fine someone for it. It's like getting arrested for something that isn't against the law.

  1. This is like kindergarten. You said bad things about me and you hurt me. The NFL Commissioner is totally out-of-bounds on this. Why don't you go ask Dick Butkus, George Blanda, Jack Ham etc. etc. and see what they think about this "new policy" in the NFL? Ok, we need to protect players from serious injuries. Well, Mr. Goody Two Shoes Goodell, why haven't you done ANYTHING about Marvin Harrison for the Colts from last year?? His gun was used to shoot a man and it was found in his building after the incident and a lawsuit was filed against him - where is the top cop of the NFL now??? Pathetic!!!

  1. wilfork needs to play more aggressive. we need to seriously knock people out and play some smash mouth D like the patriots of ol'. remember homeland defense?

Posted by Alex October 29, 08 12:11 PM
  1. Wilfork is a dirty player. That much has become apparent. He also seems to have all the mobility of Drew Bledsoe. Watching him rush the passer and piroquette out of the picture on television is a reminder of why the Pats have such a lousy pass rush.

  1. Thanks Mike. And Thank God he didn't get suspended. It's Colts week, for crying out loud! We need the big guy in the middle to stuff Dominic Rhodes and hit Peyton Manning in his just-repaired knees or whatever he just had surgery in! LOL!

  1. The Denver Bronco's have never been the same since the departure of John Elway and th Elway game plan. They have attempted so many times to use the Running game. It doesn't work. They have gone through backs like and never established the Elway game plan and passed them on before their time to other teams. They tried the passing game over and over with differen't wide recievers, still doesn't work. Now, since they over worked Jake the QB who is now gone, they bring in the "prima donna" Cutler and he is very very intelligent rest assured. Just look at his expressions. However, He isn't Elway, and until the Elway game plan is re-established. Won't happen.

  1. What's the differnce between a Pat Fan and a Bronco Fan?

    Pat's Fans aren't douchebags.

  1. Hey Shanahan, sending videos to the league about dirty play? Teach any good chop blocks lately?

Posted by hiyawathadan October 29, 08 12:32 PM
  1. The Denver team tittle tattles on the Patriots? That's ironic since for years their offensive line has had the reputation of cheap shotting, chop blocking, and crack backing...I liked Vince being a little aggressive when he thought something was beyond the pale--I hope his finger pointing didn't hurt anyone...

Posted by Chris Hodgkins October 29, 08 12:35 PM
  1. Maybe Vince brought his own tape of Denver's cheap chop blocking tactics to explain the BS.

  1. If you want to look at tapes, try looking at all of the holding by the Giants during the "great escape" by Eli Manning.
