Nuggets from Gillette

FOXBOROUGH – Patriots coach Bill Belichick held his daily press conference (10:50 a.m.) and media members had access to the locker room this morning (11:10-11:55 a.m.) at Gillette Stadium. Here were a few nuggets of note:

  • 1) Randy Moss checks in; talks about Matt Cassel and confidence. The receiver held court with reporters and was asked what type of confidence he is developing in Matt Cassel as time goes on. “I think that first of all, he has to believe in himself, and I think it will trickle on down to the offense,” Moss said. “We’ve seen Matt progress these last couple of weeks, I think quicker than we expected him to. We just have to put guys around him. He’s the quarterback, and he gets the good and the bad. With the 10 guys around him, we have to make it happen, so not everything is on him and his shoulders. He has to be smart and distribute the ball, but at the same there are 11 guys out there that have to get the job done. I like what we’re doing as a whole offensive unit, and hopefully we can keep it going.”

  • 2) Moss does not respond to Al Davis remarks. Moss was asked if he had any thoughts on comments made by Raiders owner Al Davis. “No, not at all,” he said.

  • 3) Big Vince talks a little business. Nose tackle Vince Wilfork has two years remaining on his contract, and indicated that there is no news/progress regarding an extension at this time. Yet he indicated that his preference is to remain in New England, and that he feels he’s made that clear to the club. “I’m comfortable and I love the people I’m with right now,” he said. “I’m going to do everything in my [power] to stay here and I’m pretty sure they’re going to do the same thing. I love my teammates, I love this organization, I love the coaches.”

  • 4) Belichick touches on a few 49ers strengths. Head coach Bill Belichick made two points of note about the 49ers in his press conference: Pointing out that their offense is second behind the Cowboys in big plays (20 yards or more), and that they vary their usage of pass rushers, which makes protection on third down – and identifying exactly who is rushing -- a top priority.
