Offensive participation

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff October 13, 2008 10:16 AM

A look at the snaps played by offensive skill-position players in the Patriots' 30-10 loss to the Chargers:

  • WR Randy Moss -- 61 of 68 snaps
  • WR Wes Welker -- 61 of 68
  • TE Benjamin Watson -- 51 of 68
  • RB Sammy Morris -- 39 of 68
  • WR Jabar Gaffney -- 38 of 68
  • TE David Thomas -- 31 of 68
  • RB Kevin Faulk -- 24 of 68
  • FB Heath Evans -- 17 of 68
  • TE Mike Vrabel -- 5 of 68
  • WR Sam Aiken -- 3 of 68
  • RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis -- 3 of 68

(snaps include kneel-down at the end of the first half; snaps do not include holding penalty on Billy Yates or false start on Benjamin Watson)

ANALYSIS: With Laurence Maroney and LaMont Jordan inactive, Sammy Morris took the majority of the running back snaps (39), as expected. While Kevin Faulk had 24 snaps, 15 of them came on the final three drives, an indication that Morris was leaned on heavily early. ... Of Heath Evans' 17 snaps, 12 came on one drive -- the first march of the second half, when he was on the field for every play. ... BenJarvus Green-Ellis played the final three snaps of the game. ... Wes Welker once again played in most two-wide sets, which explains why his snap count is higher than Jabar Gaffney.

MONDAY MEDIA PLAN: Patriots coach Bill Belichick is scheduled to hold a 3 p.m. EDT conference call.

    1. Kevin Faulk participated in 24 out of 68 snaps? Wow, that's so weird because my notepad is showing 23... hmmm. And I had Sammy Morris at 41 snaps... hmmm...

I was thinking that if Kevin had 2 more snaps and Sammy had 3 less, and if Randy played 2 less and if Watson played only 1 more snap in a 2-tight formation, that would've worked better for the Pats last night....

SOMEONE WHO CARES PLEASE MAKE A POST AND TELL ME WHY!!

The NFL is sooo middle-of-the-road this year it's a tragedy. No one is dominating except maybe the Giants, but that's a stretch. And the teams you thought were garbage are squeeking out some wins. Everyone is somewhere in the middle this year.

      Boring!!!!!!
Just as I've been saying. The whole league took a big hit when Brady went down.

    1. Maybe now is the time to trade Randy for some draft picks. Basically, his value couldn't be higher and who on this team is going to get him the ball anyway? Really, we should be setting up for next year.

    1. Rizzle,
How can you say 5 or 6 games ending on the final play in ONE DAY boring?? I admit, losing Brady definitely hurt the NFL, but in another way, it's made every game that much more interesting.

That being said, it's too bad that people changed the channel last night when the Pats are down 30-3- quite a difference from people changing the channel last year when the Pats would be up 45-10 or whatever at halftime

    1. I am so glad I got excited to watch the Pats this year. Might as well watch figureskating.

    1. That is funny about the channel thing Chris. Harrison said the whole team lost their wind after the offense could not punch it in just after halftime. Maybe Norv should have went deep about 3 or 4 more times. Just for me the games like this for the Pats last year were boring. I miss the dink and dunk passes thrown on a dime from Brady and the run the hell over you stiff arm/pop out of the pile Dillon. Faulk in the I formation WTF Josh? Green-Ellis should have been in alittle earlier I think. He blew someone UP pass blocking not sure who it was though. What do we get from watching Cassel anyway? If he was worth a flip. I think his contract is up at the end of the year which means it would take money to keep him.

    1. Season OVER! 8 and 8 at best. Training camp opens in July 09. We have no quarterback, it was obvious in preseason and nothing has changed.
