Coordinator tough on himself

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff October 3, 2008 12:53 PM

FOXBOROUGH -- Patriots defensive coordinator Dean Pees held court with reporters this morning at Gillette Stadium, and one aspect that stood out was how he was holding himself accountable.

Reflecting on the Patriots' last game, a 38-13 loss to the Dolphins, Pees said he didn't do a good enough job when Miami had running back Ronnie Brown taking direct snaps.

"I give Miami a lot of credit for having a little bit of a scheme to come in and give us a different look, but it's my job as a coordinator to do a better job of getting the adjustments to our guys quicker," Pees said. "We finally got it adjusted but I needed to do a better job of getting it quicker. I take responsibility for that."

The Dolphins had five running plays for 100 yards and three touchdowns, and one touchdown pass for 19 yards, when Brown took direct snaps from center.

Pees said once the defense did adjust to the look, the tackling needed to improve. Brown's 62-yard touchdown run, for example, was more a result of poor tackling than the scheme.

In the end, however, Pees pointed the finger at himself.

"It's like anything, you have good days and you have bad days, and I wouldn't say that was one of my better days," he said. "I wouldn't say it was one of our better days on defense, period."

  1. Yeah, Pees-they still scored touchdowns from that "wildcat" formation!!! "Ya Darn Right!" We'll see what adjustments you make this week, buddy!

  1. Let Dom Capers take over the defense...please! This defense hasn't attacked (like Eagles and Pittsburgh) since Romeo left. We have way too many Pro Bowlers to sit back and let play come to them. It's like we play prevent defense every week instead of having people fly to QB from different directions. Risk is understood but this defense is way, way too passive. ATTACK!!!!!

  1. I agree with GB...defense is WAY too passive and has not been the same since Romeo left. Time to let Pees go and let Capers take over.

  1. GB: You are 100% correct. It looks like the Pats are in prevent D the whole game.. It drives me nuts and everybody else.. Did the loss to the Giant's teach us anything about how a pass rush can win a game for you?

  1. The must have adjusted after the 5th touchdown!

  1. Yeah, this defense is so passive... racking up the second most sacks in the league last year just isn't good enough! Let make wholesale changes to the coaching staff. 18 straight wins was just luck anyways. As for Dom... he hasn't been responsible for a halfway decent defense since his days with the Steelers, but hey, let just give him the job anyways.

  1. romeo will be fired after this season and hopefully he comes back to the pats. our defensive is pathetic at this point. adalius should rush every other down. crable needs to start!

  1. Dom is the new guy on the block here. He is rightfully focused on the assignments for the DBs, which is a handful with all of the new faces.

Those who don't like Pees will need to wait until next year. If Romeo gets fired, he can have some kind of job here as a defensive coach if he wants one.

  1. Yeah, there was NO adjustment to that play, unless they just had better photo angles of it on the sideline. I think we're about to see some changes next year which is much needed.

  1. Flyonthewall makes a good point: though they appear passive, they did finish 2nd in sacks last year, behind the supposedly innovative Giants. That was last year, though. Through 3 games, the defense appears slow and passive. I will never understand this because they arguably have the best OLB combo in the league.

  1. Face it guys, the coaches are stupid. They don't know anything, you types are all 100% smarter than they are (the OLB's fur sur) and if Belichick knew half of what you internet Einsteins knew, he'd win more games.

Can we fire the owner for hiring these incompetents?

  1. Did the Pats ever consider that the best D in the NFL is a good running game? Especially with the old-timers on D in NE. Brady is out. You have 3 good backs and a good line. But this Niners fan keeps hoping that "genious" coach of yours will try to beat us with a heavy dose of Cassel.

  1. fly and classless Alot of the sacks came after the other teams were way behind and was in a pass only catch up mode

  1. What about 2006 Rog? If the only reason we had 47 sacks in 07 was that other teams were in pass mode all game, then how did we have 44 sacks in 06? I agree that it is easier to rack up sacks when the other team is pass happy, but I would expect a larger change from 06-07 were this to be the reason for 47 sacks.
