Pereira adds context to Rams' claims

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff October 29, 2008 08:05 PM

NFL head of officiating Mike Pereira spoke on the NFL Network tonight as part of his regular "Official Review" segment, and added context to the story about the Rams' pointing out plays in which they felt the Patriots should have been penalized.

First, Pereira indicated that it's commonplace for teams to point out plays they feel should have been penalties.

"In these bye weeks, we've been averaging about 24 clubs sending in questions, out of 28," Pereira said on the program.

Pereira also pointed out that teams don't send tapes to the NFL regarding the plays in which they have questions. Instead, they communicate the plays they have questions about -- noting the quarter, time etc. -- as the NFL has all the video of games at its headquarters. Pereira said he personally answers all questions.

As for the Patriots-Rams game, Pereira noted there were a few calls that should have been made against the Patriots, and a few more that should have been called against the Rams.

  1. oh my god.. penalties werent called in an nfl game. like this is anything new. example: multiple facemasking and holding penalties committed by the giants on the "tyree" catch in the super bowl.

  1. I'm surprised Pereira even said his refs missed something. Usually he can justify the most horrendous calls as to not make the refs look bad.

  1. It will all be made up for this sunday night. DON'T WORRY PATS HATERS Pats fans will remember why db's cannot contest a catch. Have to say though after watching the dolts and titans. The dolts weren't getting the crazy a$$ calls they are used to. Remember the first catch of last year game. Sammel had to call out 2 ref's that were within 5yrds of the catch that was out of bounds?

  1. Typical ESPN making this a headline story when 24 out of 28 clubs do it every week.

  1. Somebody should tell Mike (Pereira) that there are 32 NFL teams....(maybe he wasn't counting the Lions, Bengals, 49ers, and Chiefs!)....

  1. Probably four teams out of the thirty-two have a bye each week.

  1. Boo Hoo Boo Hoo, First Jayee and the Bronco's can't cut it on the playground and goes crying to Daddy, and now the teary eyed Rams are whining about getting beat. I think they are still crying about there Superbowl loss.
