Positional groupings

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff October 7, 2008 06:30 AM

A look at the positional groupings utilized by the Patriots in Sunday's 30-21 win over the 49ers:

  • 3 WR/1 TE/1 RB -- 42 of 81
  • 2 WR/2 TE/1 RB -- 22 of 81
  • 1 WR/2 TE/1 FB/1 RB -- 11 of 81
  • 4 WR/1 RB -- 3 of 81
  • 3 TE/1 FB/1 RB -- 3 of 81

(does not include final two kneel-downs; does include defensive holding penalty on Walt Harris, a defensive offsides penalty on Ray McDonald, and an offensive holding penalty on Randy Moss)

ANALYSIS: Of note in this game was the increased usage of multiple tight end packages (36 snaps), which reflected a bit more of the focus on the running game, as well as Benjamin Watson's return to full health. On some snaps, Watson and fellow tight end David Thomas were lined up next to each other at the line. Watson stayed in as a blocker on just about 2 out of every 3 snaps ... The Patriots had run just 33 snaps with multiple tight ends in their first three games combined ... Randy Moss's 66-yard touchdown catch came out of the 3-wide offense, as did the team's other two touchdowns, both Kevin Faulk 2-yard runs ... For the fourth straight game, the Patriots ran the majority of their plays in their base 3-wide offense.

    1. we have TE,s on the team?from our stats in the receiveing dept.moss, and welker are the only ones.the te,s are invisible.they are suppose to be the security blanket when receivers are covered.if we had more receivers involved.it would help cassel a lot more.
