Punting shifts field position

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff October 12, 2008 09:15 PM

Chris Hanson converted a perfect plus-50 attempt early in the second quarter, which was downed by Jonathan Wilhite.

That flipped the field position, as the Patriots' defense held and normally reliable Chargers punter Mike Scifres mishit his attempt.

It was a good example of how punting can affect a game.

The surprise was that the Patriots got the better of the exchange, as Hanson had been shaky entering the game, and Scifres is one of the NFL's better punters.
