Matchup of Purdue alums a key

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff October 8, 2008 01:49 PM

Left tackle Matt Light just held a conference call with reporters, and one of the points he made is that there will be a Purdue reunion Sunday night in San Diego.

Light should see his fair share of former Purdue teammate Shaun Phillips, the Chargers' solid outside linebacker.

"Shaun is going to be over to the strength side, which was [Shawne] Merriman's role in the past, and I think you're going to see [Marques] Harris and Jyles [Tucker] from the back side of that," Light said.

In Phillips, Light sees similarities to other Purdue linebackers who have excelled in the NFL.

"When he was at Purdue, he met guys like Rosevelt Colvin and he kind of modeled his game after him in his early years. I kind of see a little bit of that style in the way he plays," Light said. "He was a younger guy when I was there. We had some good battles in college and it's been fun facing him in San Diego."
