Rams throw their own flags

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff October 28, 2008 06:10 PM

The Patriots were not flagged for an accepted penalty in Sunday's win over the Rams, marking the first time in franchise history they've accomplished the feat.

Rams coach Jim Haslett, however, believes the Patriots got away with multiple non-calls.

"I thought there should have been some calls on the other side," Haslett was quoted as saying in today's St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

In the Post-Dispatch, Haslett pointed out three instances in which he felt personal foul penalties should have been called: a facemask on quarterback Marc Bulger, a late hit on Bulger, and an out-of-bounds hit on cornerback Fakhir Brown after an interception.

The Patriots were penalized for offensive holding, but that call was declined by the Rams.

It is commonplace for all teams, on a weekly basis, to point out plays to the NFL officiating department that they feel should have been penalized, or in which they are seeking a more detailed explanation.

In terms of the process, teams don't actually send a tape of those plays to the league, but simply point them out, as the league has all video from the games on site.

  1. Sour grapes. I, too, commented on the lack of penalties called on the Pats, during the game, and immediately foilowing. While it is not common for that occurance to happen, this is not the first time, and it wont be the last time, in NFL history.
If the Pats wanted to, I am sure they could write a book, in fact one with many pages, of the calls that they believe they never got, including the whistle that was never blown in the Super Bowl when Manning was in the grasp.

  1. Mike,
While it may be commonplace for teams to point out to the league questionable calls, is it commonplace for the teams to complain to the media?

  1. It just reflects why they lose so often. They should be focusing on next weeks game, and not on their beefs with last weeks game. I also think Goodell should be insulted by their announcing this to the media. It's gripin about the officiatin x10!

  1. The Pats were flagged on a Matt Light hold, the Rams just chose to take the sack instead.

  1. So much for accountability. Compalining to the media?

    Pathetic, Haslett.

  1. The Rams motto: If we can't beat you on the field; we'll try to beat you with a video tape!

  1. G,
The Pat's have been one of the least penalized teams in the league since BB got here. It's called good coaching.
But now that it's in the media, expect to see them to get flagged for walking on to the field.
