Strategy in focus

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff October 12, 2008 10:04 PM

The Patriots had struggled to find some consistency offensively but came out strong in the second half before their opening drive stalled at the goal-line.

The Patriots seemed to find a matchup they liked by going "empty" with receivers Randy Moss and Wes Welker, tight end David Thomas, fullback Heath Evans and running back Sammy Morris.

The Chargers looked like they went nickel against the empty look with that personnel grouping, and the Patriots had success.

That will be something to watch on the Patriots' next drive.

  1. Even with Brady, this defense would still stink!

  1. Pathethic. This team should just mail it in. Matt Cassell is the worst

  1. Really, Mike, I admire your professionalism, but this game isn't worth analyzing. I'm turning off the TV and going to bed. I suggest you do the same.

  1. The best strategy for the Pats is to get rid of Josh McDaniels and then move Matt Cassel to the practice squad, or even further.

  1. Yes, it would still stink, but wouldn't be on the field as much

  1. Couldn't agree more. I know its in Bill We Trust but...for Plan B for when Brady goes down as Matt Cassell is unacceptable. If Cassell could not win a starting job in the NCAA then why does bill think he can start in the NFL. At this point I would take Mike Bishop. This year is a lost cause. How soon before Moss gets ticked that Cassell can not hit him when he is open. How long before the defense gets sick of always being on the field. Time to pull the Cassell plug. NOW

  1. I wasn't watching the next drive. What happened?

  1. What can possibly be gained by continuing to play Cassel?

    Where's Tommy Hodson these days?

  1. Let's face it. The Pats have become a mediocre team. The offensive line
(with the exception of Mankins and maybe Koppen) is a joke
and our secondary is pathetic. Even our highly vaunted defensive
line seems overrrated. No pass rush. Matt Cassel is not the guy!

  1. The dumbest NON move in the history of the Patriots was Belichick's refusal to bring in an experienced quarterback (Culpepper, Simms, Testeverde) when Brady went down. Just about everyone that watches football was able to see that Cassel was pitiful, that he never should have even made the team, and yet Belichick kept him, and even made him the starter when Brady went down. That is, perhaps, the worst coaching decision in the history of this team.

  1. Why blame Josh?. You forget he engineered the best offensive season in history for a team last year.
Two major issues- awful QB resulting in extremely conservative offensive play calling. BTW does anyone else think Cassel is a better RB than maroney?
Also, the much touted defense has been really bad- Brady or no Brady. Who knew the franchise depended so much on him?

  1. How is it Cassell's fault? I thought he played offense.

    Jenny

  1. Hey, Jenny. It's Cassel's fault because he can't generate any offense. He holds the ball too long and can't hit open receivers when he does try. He's had both physical and mental miscues all night.

If the Patriots scored some points and held onto the ball, it would relieve a little pressure from the defense.

However, point taken. The defense has looked as ugly as it ever has. Someone thinks the defense is so good they never need to attack. Here's the result of that thinking.

  1. My dear Jenny, allow me , with due respect, to teach you something. THE BEST DEFENSE IS A GOOD OFFENSE, and truer words were never spoken.

  1. Well, Jenny Cassell, maybe because if your husband Matt had been good enough to start in college he might have some clue how to play in the NFL and throw a pass more than 5 yards. Moving the chains (those orange markers on the side of the field that are 10 yards apart) might keep the defense of the field. So, yes, your husband does play offense, but in an a manner that is very offensive to the defense.

  1. Strategy? Really? I don't see anything at all. What happened to the creativeness of the offense and defence??

I don't know what Cassel is showing them at practice, but he's got to go. Bring anybody in but him.
