Vince Wilfork update

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff October 30, 2008 10:28 AM

Patriots nose tackle Vince Wilfork will be fined $35,000 by the NFL, a league source confirmed today.

The website profootballtalk.com first reported the amount of the fine.

Unnecessary roughness against the Broncos was what sparked the fine (updated 12:21 p.m.). The severity of the fine is based on what league officials felt was a pattern of aggression that could negatively impact other players in the game, the league source said.

When Wilfork met with commissioner Roger Goodell on Tuesday, Goodell wanted to be sure that Wilfork understood the importance of the safety of the players around him. The fine provides Wilfork something tangible that clearly reflects Goodell's thoughts.

  1. What is this soccer?

Pretty soon players are going to start diving and flopping

  1. There was a replay that appeared to show him throwing a punch, and then later sticking his fingers through the facemask to poke their face (like what he did last year). Vince is a great player, but in my opinion, the fine is deserved.

  1. So he was fined for potentially affecting players negatively in the future? Talk about taking a proactive approach to discipline...

  1. That is a lot of money. Too much money for a "pattern of aggression" (in football, no less).

I hear Goodell will take over the Boxing Association next... maybe he can start fining them for "patterns of aggression" too.

King Goodell needs to be removed from office, he might not be ruining the league, but his "pattern of the NFL front office making headlines instead of athletes and
the games" needs to be stopped.

  1. In hockey, chippy stuff is just part of the game. It should be no different in football. So Vince poked his fingers through a guys mask! So what!!!! Football is starting to become a lot like politics. You have to be nice to everyone. You have to play politically correct! You can't hit too hard! We have become so SOFT as a society it makes me puke. What's next? Is the NFL going to break the league up into different classes (large markets get their own championship and small markets compete for their championship???) Everyone complains, whines, cries.....fans are no different. It would be one thing if Vince elbowed Jay or any other player long after the play was dead. Or it would be different if he ran Jay over while he was delivering the play to his teammates....in the huddle!!!!!! I mean come on, what the hell people!

  1. He is by far the most creative commissioner ever. Fine for a "pattern of aggression"???? This guy can come up with anything to fine people.

  1. I like the Pats but Wilfork is earning the reputation as a dirty player, deservedly so from my perspective. Someone should tell him to knock the extra BS off.

  1. Listen, Wilfork and Seymour both engage in extra-curricular activities. I saw how Seymour pushed down the RAMS QB after he knocked him down.

  1. Well you are right and wrong Brent. Aggression is allowed in both sports "as long as it's done between the whistles." See Adam Mair in Buffalo the other night challenging Chris Neil of the Sens after the game in the hallway, can't be done. For Vince, he sometimes "forgets" that the whistle has been blown. Personally, I could care less - I want my NT to be mean and nasty, it carries a certain level of power that you better double team this guy because if you don't the guy is getting to our QB or RB and is wreaking havoc. It also loosens pressure on Warren and Seymour - it's a win win baby!!!

  1. I just updated the information. Technically, the fine is for unncessary roughness against the Broncos. But the severity of the fine is based on the pattern of aggression.

  1. Why are fans outraged that WIlfork got fined? Who cares? Read/listen to Vince WIlfork's own comments. He's okay with it. Enough said. It's not your money and Vince and the rest of the Patriots are not your friends that you need to stand up for. Time to grow up, boys and girls.

  1. It's actually quite simple. It's more Patriot hating, plain and simple. So tiresome.

  1. ESPN is saying that he was fined but not suspended because the film did not show "intent", Goodell please explain why he would be fined if there's no intent. I stepped on my cats tail this morning by accident, lethal injection?

  1. Wilfork is a dirty player who needs to be stopped before he permanently injures someone. The ONLY reason to stick your fingers inside someone's facemask is an attempt to blind them. $35,000 is chump change to a guy who makes over $600,000 a year, but if you hit him with it enough times, maybe he'll learn something.

  1. If you want to stop a player from sticking his fingers through your face mask, its very simple - you wait until the fingers are securely poked into the mask, quickly snap your head forward and fall to the ground. Season over. They'd have to surgically re-attach his fingers afterwards.

My point? Throw the flags, and let the men deal with it on the field.

    Cheers,

    Davo

  1. Wasn't there an issue of video taping last year? Why do the Broncos (and Jets by their own admission) get to tape with out a fine but the Pats are always in the cross hairs? Anything to bring down success. pathetic.

  1. $35k is chump change to someone making $600k!?!?!?! So $3,500 is chump change to someone making $60,000....I'm glad you don't make the traffic violation fines.

  1. Roger "the JET" Goodell is mad because Vince spoke up about the guy that took Brady out for the season. That guy took an extra lunge to get to Brady's knees and didn't get fined.
Vince was fined for less than that a few years back.

Posted by George Brooks October 30, 08 05:22 PM
  1. Vince just needs to calm down a bit after the whistle blows...just save it for the next play.

  1. how is 35k chump change? If i got 5 to 6 percent taken out of my salaray because I was too mean to someone at work I would flip.

and there is more than one reason to stick your fingers in someones facemask "trying to blind someone" is one and highly unlikely that that is what he is doing since I saw the replay of him do it last year. It's annoying and degrading and Wilfork uses it or tactics like it to get under the skin of other players. just like the hockey pests with slashes and elbows.

I've met the guy and he is incredibly nice and down to earth, I hope he can shake the bad rep.

  1. I don't know where you come up with fingers in the facemask. This is from the NFL press release:
Wilfork was summoned before Goodell after the Broncos claimed tape of New England's 41-7 win Oct. 20 showed Wilfork elbowing Cutler in the helmet.
However, the tapes that were reviewed during the hearing did not show that clearly, upholding New England's contention there was no intent to injure. They also showed Wilfork helping up Cutler and patting him on the back after the play.
People should check facts before they shoot off comments
