Wilfork talks about meeting

Posted by Christopher L. Gasper, Globe Staff October 29, 2008 12:23 PM

FOXBOROUGH -- Patriots nose tackle Vince Wilfork spoke today about his meeting with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell yesterday to discuss the Patriots defensive lineman's style of play, which has led to fines in the past, and a possible suspension, stemming from an elbow to the head of Denver Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler.

As colleague Mike Reiss reported and as was first reported by the website profootballtalk.com, Wilfork will be not be suspended by Goodell. Wilfork called the meeting productive, but could not say definitively that he would not be fined for the elbow on Cutler.

"I have no idea. I'm still waiting. I walked out pretty happy and satisfied with how it went," said Wilfork.

Wilfork had been fined four times since last season. Most recently, the NFL Network reported that Broncos coaches sent film to the NFL from the Oct. 20 game showing Wilfork elbowing quarterback Jay Cutler after a play.

Here is a transcript of the rest of the session with Wilfork:

How was the meeting?
"The meeting was productive. I think both sides were happy. I got a chance for him to hear my side of my story and how I approach the game. I got a chance to hear what he had to say about the whole situation of my past history and playing football and all that good stuff. I think we both left pretty happy."

Do you expect to be fined or suspended?
"I have no idea. I'm still waiting. I walked out pretty happy and satisfied with how it went."

Did he give you an idea of when it could go down?
"Sometime this week. I don't know. I'm just waiting. When you guys find out I'll find out. I mean it [was] very productive. [He] got a chance to get to know me as a person and as a player also, so we'll see. But at the same time I'm very happy that I got a chance to sit down and have a one-on-one with him. I'm pretty sure there are a lot of things he learned about me, and I learned about him. We'll go forward from here."

Do you rethink your style of play?
"I play hard, and that's one thing I stressed to him -- I'm very passionate about the game. Sometimes it might be too hard, and I told him that. We'll go from here. I told him I'll try to change my style up a little bit, and hopefully, get a better slate. But right now, I got a pretty bad one out there. We hit some areas that needed to be touched on from his standpoint and my standpoint. We both listened to each other, and I think that was the main thing."

What points did he make?
"How hard I play, and at times it's at the end of the play when things happen. At the end of the play taper down a little, but in between the whistle I'm fine."

There are reports you'll avoid a suspension. Do you feel good about that?
"I feel good about the how situation with how we approached and the end result. I just had a good feeling, so hopefully, that's the case."

  1. Just another extension of the Patriot Policy "Winning makes it right"

  1. T Schultz - perhaps figure skating is more suited to some one as delicate as yourself

  1. Oh Mr. Schultz, you must be heart broken that the Pats are 5-2, without the NFL's best player, their best Safety (and should be future HOFer), their starting and backup running back and their short yardage rb. (not to mention no. 61 for 6 weeks). Bill Belichick is an absolute genius of a football coach and motivator. His players are the very definition of professionalism.

Mr. Schultz..... Envy is one of the Seven Deadly sins... it is also not becomming....

Perhaps, (like your name sake's. Charles Schultz once wrote about Mr. Charlie Brown), your football team must have "got a rock!!"

Go Pats..... By the way Mr. Schultz.... go back and take a close look at Polllard's hit on Brady and then compare that to Wilfork's hit ob the Bills' QB (I think it was Losman) last year...... VERY VERY similar. Wilfork got fined heavily - Pollard destroyed the game's best player and got ZERO... well actually, he got famous well beyond his skill set and beloved by folks like yourself.

    ENVY.................... Go Pats!

  1. Winning makes it right ?

So does owning a gun that was used to shoot someone's hand off in downtown philly near a carwash ... AKA Marvin Harrison

So yes, winning does make it right I guess.

Vince ... don't change anything ... go out there and toss Jeff Saturday aside and crush Manning

  1. Schultzy - I don't understand your comment. There was no fine and no suspension, so what needs to be made 'right'? There can be no sweeping under the rug if they was no violation.

  1. Polamolo was right. The NFL is turning into wussies.

  1. Why is he not suspended. I'm tired of Goddell coddling the Pat's. Any ohter team and he'd be out.

  1. I find it amusing that non-Patriots fans would go out of their way to register and post on a Boston newspaper to express their hate. Get over yourselves and go mope on ESPN.com or your own local papers.

  1. Aside from the fact that instead of reviewing the tape to look at how to fix the stinkeroo they turned in against the Pats - did I read right that the Broncos coaches sent a videotape into the commissioner? I remember moves like those from the playground when I was a kid, but back then it was done by 7 year old girls. I can't believe a professional football team "tattle-taled" on Wilfork. They should change their names to the Denver Whiners.

  1. Ken and Schultz,
Since the Patriots have been on top of this league the New Commish has been handing down fine after fine on them!Only folks I know who haven't recieved fines are the opposition who are cheap shoting the Patriots on every chance they get ! The Patriot players shouldn't be fined or suspended until Pollard gets his permanent walking papers from the league for his blatanty cheap shot on the knee (Helmet driving into knee in a downward motion,an automatic ejection by league rule!)of the premier QB in all of football..So until that day arrives all you winers need too give it a rest, and just enjoy another potential Championship run by BB and the Patriots, this time with a High School QB and lord only knows who will be in the defensive backfield. We do however acknowledge your pain for whichever team you root for because its obvious they are one of the perennial losers!!!! Just like the complainers whose blogs I have just been reading.

  1. Yeah, Goodell coddles the Pats...

A defensive tackle plays extremely hard and rough at times. OH NO!!! I suppose Wilfork should have been put to death and the Patriots franchise disbanded. That would be the only legit solution, right?

I love how this retarded "logic" always only applies to the Patriots. Where was all the clamoring for the Titans franchise to be punished for Haynesworth stomping on Gurode's face?? How about any of the numerous on-field incidents from TO? I didn't hear much detest for the Eagles or Cowboys... only for the individual involved. But of course, the Patriots should all pay... even the past ones. From now on, I think Steve Grogan should pick up the tab for all incidents in the NFL.

Your jealousy of this franchise makes me smile and laugh...

  1. There is nothing quite as sad and pathetic as rival fans registering and commenting on a fan website. Now get back upstairs and do your chores...mommy is calling you!

  1. Seems Goodell never stopped working for the Jets. Is there any debate he wants to destroy the Patriots?

Also, bravo to fellow Pats fans who haven't forgotten the absolute cheapshot spear on Brady's knee. That dirtbag Pollard got nothing. Everyone in N.E. sees right through you, Goodell!

  1. T Schultz:

Were you ever in the army? If so I am guessing you were a Seargeant because evidently...

    YOU KNOW....NOTHING!!!

  1. Jets???? Who are they? Are they a football team????

  1. Wilfork has a fantastic work ethic, but the forearm shot shown on TV was ... Warren Sapp (never would have done that when he was playing) and Marshall Faulk (we know he’s not biased) both commented that it was a cheap shot and it was. I'm glad Wilfork didn't get what he deserved, but next time he's not going to be so lucky. Remember he’s a product of the U and Larry Coker and his fines are all a result of what he learned there.

  1. The real wusses are the Bronco's for crying to Daddy when little Jayee gets a boo boo. It's amazing that every time the Patriots it for some other reason than they just beat the team. I bet the Bronco's coaches weren't sending any tapes to daddy showing how well little Jayee could hold on to the football at the end of the Chargers game. Just makes me want to cry to Daddy....

  1. I don't think that Mr Schultz is like Charles Schultz....It is more along the lines of Seargent Schultz from Hogan's Heroes.....I KNOW NOTHING!

  1. Again, we're under a microscope. Who are the Broncos complaining to the league about play on their tapes. If everyone team did this the commissioner would have time for nothing. This is nothing but a bunch whining jealous pundits. Grow up. After Brady was hurt I predicted the Patriots would be a respectable 10-6. 5-2 isn't so bad and so far our backup QB is better than ok.
Why don't you get on Eli's case. Spoiled brat who I disliked the moment he asked not to be in SD The Mannings are not respectable or honorable. Just selfish cowards. Eli and Elway are bunch of cry babies.
