Patriots host 4 for workouts

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff November 27, 2008 08:30 AM

The Patriots have one open spot on their eight-man practice squad, and perhaps with that in mind, the team had the following four players in for workouts earlier this week:

  • DE Angelo Craig (Cincinnati)

  • WR Joel Filani (Texas Tech)

  • WR Scott Mayle (Ohio)

  • WR Marquay McDaniel (Hampton)

The Patriots, like most other teams, have had success in using the practice squad as an avenue to groom players before promoting them to the 53-man roster (e.g. BenJarvus Green-Ellis, Mike Richardson, Antwain Spann, Vince Redd, Tyson DeVree).

The current practice squad is comprised of the following players:

  • WR Maurice Price
  • S Mark Dillard
  • C/G Ryan Wendell
  • C/G Dan Connolly
  • OLB Darrell Robertson
  • DL Titus Adams
  • P Tom Malone

    1. Three WR's? Are Moss, Welker and Gafney going somewhere?

    1. The WRs are for special teams -- need some speed to cut down on long returns.

    1. Mayle (Ohio) McDaniel (Hampton) can both return kicks and punts. Mayle was an incredible KR at Ohio avg once leading the MAC with a 27 yd avg. He is also an accomplished collegiate WR, finishing 2nd in most receiving yards in a career with 1,847, 3rd in TD receptions for a career with 11 and 4th in school history for most receptions in a career with 107. Craig played better as a DE his senior yr than he did as an OLB, which he would be for the Pats. But he is described as relentless, quick and agile but has no particular skill that wows you. Joel Filani is has played the Z "slot" WR in college and he's tall, rangy with good hands and ok speed.
