Big Ben on Cassel, Brady
FOXBOROUGH -- Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger held a conference call with New England reporters today and he was asked his opinion of what's unfolded with the Patriots' quarterback situation -- Matt Cassel filling in for Tom Brady.
"I love it. I’ve always taken the underdog role," he said. "You always have a special spot in your heart for quarterbacks because you know what they go through. But, when he came in and early on, people started talking bad about him. They started talking about ‘oh boy, how much we miss Tom’ -- and I’m sure they do miss Tom because he’s something special. But, for him [Cassel] to put up the numbers and to play and win football games, I’ve really enjoyed it just for the fact that people thought he couldn’t do it and he’s been doing it."
Roethlisberger added that Cassel "has been there for a long time, and obviously he knows that system, and it was just going to be a matter of time until he got his legs underneath him and got comfortable out there."
Asked a follow-up question about Cassel throwing for 400 yards in back-to-back games, Roethlisberger said: "I'm not going to take anything away from him, I think he's a phenomenal quarterback like I said before. Back to back 400-yard games, that's awesome. Nothing against Matt Cassel, but I don't think Tom is really worried about his job. That's Tom Brady."

He speaks the truth, Cassel is earning a contract for next season with one of the teams desperate for a QB.
I hate to see what Ben is going to do to our secondary? I am as loyal as they come regarding the Pats but have no faith in Deltha, Hobbs, Sanders. I only think B.M. is worth keeping around.
"I hate to see what Ben is going to do to our secondary? "
Umm, not much? Gee, last year they were going to run over us with "Fast" Willie Parker. Hmm, what happened there?
Ben Cheeseburger doesn't scare me.
Why didn't someone ask Big Ben how it feels to have Matt Cassel have better stats than he does ?
Why didn't someone ask him how he throw multiple interceptions against the Colts and Cassel calmy lead his team against them and fell short in the end because of a couple of blunders.
Never been a fan of Big Ben and I will tell you why ...
Does anyone else notice that a lot of his passing yards come from broken down plays when a DB or LB can only cover a guy for so long ? He gets way too much credit and is very over-rated for a QB.
Who would have thought that the Patriots would be favoured against the Steelers in late November without Tom Brady ? Any Takers ?
Keep it going Matt Cassel. Just do what the Pats did on offence last year ... go shot-gun all game long and throw it all over the yard, like Tom did and light em up
Yeah, I think Ben's performances this year is whats going to give us a good shot at this one. Will be interesting to see if Cassel can stay patient against the Steelers D - this will be a full 60 minute game.
Hines Ward is a worry, but not because Ben Rothlesburger is the passer. Simply because Hines Ward is top notch. But I don't think he has the pocket movement of someone like Manning who can avoid the sack almost every time. I see Ben making some great passes to Ward, but I also see him taking a few hits for a loss.
Ben Roethlisburger doesn't scare me either. Why should he. I am not playing the in the game. I am anxious though; He is very good. Were you scared the Giants would win the Super Bowl - my guess is that you weren't. Any NFL team can win on any given day - especially one as good as the Steelers. It is better to be silent and be thought a fool.......
Cassel is a great system quarterback, he's been there for a while, understands it and you can't underestimate the tools he has to work with starting with that offensive and line and a group of receivers that gives NFL secondaries nightmares.
I've noticed the pass rush picking up the last couple of games. I think the D-line, specifically Seymour and Wilfork, have been playing great all season. I expect the line to put considerable pressure on Roethlisberger, hurry him into some bad throws, a pick or two, and get him on the ground three to five times. I also expect the Pat's offense to keep doing what they've done, spread the defense out and employ a short efficient passing attack with a heavy dose of play action, draws, and screens. The Pat's D will bend but not break and hold the Steelers down just enough. The Pats "O" will win time of possession by a fair margin and pull out a huge and much needed victory. Pats 26-20.
Roethlisberger made some nice respectable comments about the Patriots and the fans are digging on him? Ben's good at what he does- throwing when the pocket breaks down- and Cassel is good at what he does. You want the perfect QB? Go back to Kelly, Young, Montana, Aikman, Favre, Brady. Cassell hasn't proven himself a long-term solution for anybody yet. He's in a good system with good players. Can he resurrect a losing team into a contender (ala Favre/Jets?). To be fair I don't think Ben could either but gimme a break you guys are talkin out your aspoles. Go figure... You're NE fans- morons are to be expected. Prediction: Harrison 3 sacks and safety, Woodley 4 sacks, Polamalu 2 INT, Farrior 1 INT. Steelers 35, Patriot 17.
Hey All Pats Fans,
As I am we have all heard in the last couple of weeks, it bears worth repeating.
THIS WEEK IS A MUST WIN GAME. Period.
I just checked the remaining schedules of the: Jets, Steelers, Ravens and Colts.
I do not see the Jets losing another game this season, so the division might be out of reach. That brings the Wild - Card into play.
However, we lost to the Colts and do not own that tie-breaker and the Titans have that division wrapped up at 10-1. Therefore, Indy (with a weak schedule) is most likely to grab 1 of the 2 of the wild card spots.
The Ravens are 7-4 and have a so-so schedule but play the Bungles this weekend and then close with 3 / 4 games at home. We do not play them this year and at the moment they have a stronger conference record that the Pats and thus own the tie-breaker over us.
The Steelers are 8-3 and have a tougher schedule with some tough road games and Dallas at home. They might succeed in giving up the division to the Ravens.
All in all ... this leads to a huge game because it gives us the Tie - Breaker over the Steelers and improves our record in the AFC while lessenning the Steelers record in both respective categories.
MUST WIN. HAVE TO HAVE THIS GAME. I think 11-5 can get us in.
Thoughts on this game and play-off seeding ?
dmpc, you're an idiot. Who do you think extends those broken plays so that the WRs can get open, by moving around in the pocket and shrugging off sacks? You basically just took Ben Roethlisberger's greatest advantage over most QBs, and somehow looked at it as a weakness. Let me break it down for you: Most QBs can complete passes when the play works and the WRs beat the coverage. But if the defense covers the WRs, or gets through the O-line, they're done. Ben Roethlisberger can complete passes when the play works and the WRs beat the coverage, OR, when the play breaks down and the D is covering the WRs and/or getting into the backfield, he can elude the pressure and STILL make plays.
something worth noting...it looks like both of the starting steeler CB's will be OUT on Sunday. could Matt be in for another 400 yard day? i think he has a shot...afterall Polumalu can't cover everyone.
ohh, and how did the "steel curtain" do last year at Foxboro? They allowed Brady to throw for 399 + 4 TD's....
Go Pats
I was never a Big Ben fan, mostly because I never liked the Steelers, but you have to give him his due. He took a wildcard team to the SB and won. If he never throws another TD in the NFL, you can't take that away from him.
It's the same with the Manning brothers. I never cared for them, but they are great players, and they've performed when the money was on the table. That's what makes Brady who he is.
Matt Cassel has a chance to up his value and move the Pats closer to the playoffs with a good performance on Sunday, and I think he'll do it. He's on a roll. I don't like seeing Seymour & Warren both not practicing though. Ugh.
George, your a moron! Ben's the most over-rated QB since your momma
George, your a MORON! Ben's the most over-rated QB since your momma! Shut your face!
Sould be a great game. Cassel has exceeded everyones expectations and the Steelers are just a downright mean team.
Bottomline is if Pats can make some big plays in the passing game then they have a great shot at wining. We all know they won't be able to run the ball for squat against that Steeler "D".
Be is a great QB. Not as good as Brady but the guy wins. And they need to make sure they bring ben down if they get to him. That guy kills teams when he shrugs off a sack.
steve-above comment earlier.you are the moron.don't you know that we own the steelers.especially in the playoffs.the only reason you won a few yrs. ago is you didn't have to play the patriots.
i guarantee a victory now, after what yr. moronic safety anthony smith said.do you think that won't be on belichek's bulletin board this week for motivation.
boston no.#1 sportstown in the world.-go pats,celts&bruins!
Roethliesberger did not win the Super Bowl, Jerome Bettis did. Ben would have been lost without the Bus as he played pretty ineptly, much as one would expect a rookie q-b to play in the biggest game of the year. Roethlisberger is a product of a football crazed town with nothing else to root for. He's good but not nearly as great as Pittsburgh fans make him out to be. And Pyscho Ward is a filthy player.
19 and one big loss is all I can think of when I think of the Cheating Patriots. As I also recall someone's defense is rated #1 in the entire league. Have the patriots played a defense as tough.
George, While you are throwing out the "idiot" comments, maybe you can answer how Roethlisberger's getting sacked 47 times in 2007 and 46 times in 2006 fits into your "greatest strength" arguement regarding his ability to avoid sacks . . .. must be some more of that Iron City logic.
SID,
Ward Filthy???????
Here's a guy that doesn't care about personal numbers, puts the team first, will go across the middle all day and when it's time to block, puts people on their ass...legally. the fact is, you'd love him on your team. It's amazing a wide receiver causes defenses to shake and cry like little girls. Come on, filthy???????
You pats fans may not be scared of Ben but you better be scared of the defense this year they are coming and coming hard for the win in Fox.
Ben's a humble guy. Class act. As for this Sunday's game, it will likely come down to defense. If the Steelers #1 D shows up, it will be lights out for the Patriots Backup Quarter turned starter......MC. Guarantee he won't be throwing 400 yrds. this Sunday. Should be a good game.
Hey Pats Fans,
The Steelers have both their starting Safeties healthy for this year's contest with the Pats. Last year the Stillers had two back-ups starting in the Pats game. Willie Parker ran for 127 yards, but the Stillers got run over by the Patriots passing attack.
The Steeler's offensive line is not as strong this year (two starters are out), but if Ben does not throw interceptions, the Steelers win 24-16
GO STEELERS!!! THE STEELER NATION IS EVERYWHERE!!! Everybody hates the Pats. Take your head out of the Barf bag when The G MEN KILLED YOU LAST YEAR IN THE SUPERBOWL....WHAT A GREAT GAME!! WITH A GREAT ENDING.
This is why New England fans suck. Ben was complinenary to New England and had nothing but good things to say.Of course the fans have to down him as the always do. Patriots get caught cheating.......nothing much happens. Light fights.......justa fine. New England fans always wonder why they are hated around the league. Just read the blogs and they will find out why. Joey Porter had alot to say in his interview about Billthechick this week. The Steelers D is healthy this year and the head coach is not a rookie as he was last year.I just wish Ben was healthy and the offense was at full strenght. Pgh34 -N.E.17
"Joey Porter had alot to say in his interview about Billthechick this week."
LOL. There's nothing more pathetic than Steeler fans running their mouths on message boards, except ex-Steelers running their mouths at every chance. Porter is a classic Steeler. Speaking of which, what's Kordell up to these days? Haven't heard from him in a while, maybe he's got his mouth full? J Lambert?
You said it J Lambert. Just remember WE HAVE 5 they have 3. Their just mad STEELERS are the ONLY team to win 4 in six years!! Thats when football was a mans game. 58 was a bad mother F*****!!! Look for me at the 50 yrd. line towel waving.
